So violent were the “roughs,” Mr. Hanna had to be sent into the jail for safe-keeping, but. was release ed as soon as the storm, which he had raised, had subsided. He resumed his position on the Sun, and we hear no more of him until ’C2. When the federal forces occupied Bal timore, Mr. Hanna visited their encampment in hss professional capacity as reporter,'and was recognized as a secessionist, assaulted and terribly beaten by the infuriated soldiers. When the Examiner was revived by Pollard, Hanna returned to it, and trouble commenced afresh, for he wrote an article on the Yankee hop, at the Spottswood, which so enraged - General Terry that he suppreseed the paper. Then came that little misunderstanding with Manager Ogden, of the theatre, and a street fight with pistols. Adding the last terrible shooting affair, which has brought his name prominently before the public again in con- nectiofi with Pollard’s, and’ we have few threads in a life, than which few have been remarkable and conspicuous. Personally, Marshall Hanna is the beat known man in Biohmond—tall 1 and gaunt looking, with a luxuriant growth of long hlack curly hair, he is known wherever he goes—and if he is not now, time was when 1 he was everywhere a favorite. Of. his great natural talents there can be no two opinions —he writes with wonderful ease and celerity, and his articles, divested of their morbidness and acridity, are always entertaining and in teresting. THE LARGEST STOCK 119 and 121 Congress St. CARPETING! UNITED STATES MAIL! For Palatka, E. Fla., TOUCHING AT BRUNSWICK, ST. MART’S, FER- NASill.VA, JACKSONVILLE AND PICOLATA. WINDOW SHADES HAMILTON PEPPER’S 119 and 121 Congress St. arrived this morning, tells a different tale. The Paris correspondents of the EnjiA journals relates a variety of incidents, all go ing to show that good health is beginning to fail him. For example, not only did he not mount on horseback and follow the thousands at the great hunt, the other day, at Campie°ne, j but, contrary to his usual practice, he accept ed assistance while getting into and alighting from his carriage. At the shooting party, it could be seen that he walked with great difficulty aud seeming lameness. On S the evening of the chase a chair was placed | v ibr him on the balcony of the chateau, on which he continued seated until the condu- I ot the affair, although the Empress and 5 Prince of Wales were both standing. At the i performance at the theatre, too, a night or two afterwards, he sat with his head bent for- tvard on his chest the whole time, seeming T, perfectly inattentive to everything that was v going on. And so it may be safely conclud ed that, when a French Emperor can no Jon- | ger “shoot” or hold his head up at the. theatre, he must be, to say the least of it, ina bail I way.—A*. Y. Express, Designations of House Committees.—It is quite significant that Speaker Colfax's aildi- | tious to committees, charged with what re- I lates to negroes in the South aud their car- ■ net-bag leaders, are largely members of. the J latter class. It were well, we think, that per- j sons less interested should have been, desig- | natecL Carpet-baggers have come to be sub- ; | jects of derisive laughter where referred to in t places of popular resort, as theatres, Ac., and | the rank and file of Republicans scarcely con- 1 eeal their contempt for those who force them selves upon a community as office-holders, 1 through a negro vote exclusively.—National intelligencer.
