* t ■ » piff**"* W“d of bewilderment, too, as to Jf„Jto choose, and how one is to leave any of even while he knows that he canilot all I found myself tracing likenesses !f n ersons in them, and similarity'ofplumi^e ffitli birds. It is a rare pleasure fhis, and I Iia ve an idea that the varied forms and tints beautv in shells strike deeper with ns than flowers ; v "not only because they are not so Common with ns, but from the fact that the t,-aaty is unfading, the form fixed and lasting. T think the mind takes in this fivct with elec- ,ric force, with the pleasure that the sight of L shell affords. There is an added pleas ure in gathering shells, in the exquisite en joyment the motive affords. The thought J .j,ot each and every shell you gather wiU „rove a source of unbounded interest and .i e i s ure to the far off loved one, as evidenc- » vour thought of and appreciation of her love of the beautiful, is sufficient to add ten fold eagerness to the search. Repaired on board, hauled in our anchor from the beach, and standing in for the little Bav in which we had found a snug Harbor in .up morning, came to anchor. The dew falls heavilv to-night, and the decks are wet as with rain. Ends with Northwest winds and pleasant weather. Inside or Bocca Cieqo Pass, ) Slay 26, 1868. f Begins with light easterly winds and pleas- diit. °At 5, a. m., got under way, and stood up lor John's Pass. Made a camp on Northern end of Sand Key, and went to cooking break- last. Took a turn upon the beach for exer- c ; ge u ot neglecting a shell that came in our wav'. At 11 a. m. took in our anchor and ruide sail for “Indiau Pass,” determining ji possible, to make the inside passage to f'Clear Water Harbor.” Finding on our ar rival off the Pass that there was not sufficient water at that state of the tide to admit of tliis, stood through “Indian Pass” into the gulf, and up the coast of Bruff Key for “New pass,” the entrance to “Clear Water Harbor.” At 6 p. m. atter a beautiful run shot through •New Pass,” and throwing our anchor upon the inner beach of Bruff Key, made arrange ments for supper. Supper over, B and I took a stroll by moonlight upon the beach observing the ravages of the late heavy rtorai, from whose fury we had found such gad of America, offers all these advantages to the yacthtmen and sportsmen of every class, save indeed, that ofPharaoh. f tHT And now, friend B, adieu. Thou art the 7 ery . Pnnce Of good fellows, and not the least among the pleasant memories of our Et- ue ertuse together is the association with, and friendship for yon that has been found in mv heart of hearts. Perdido. Westward and pleasant. Mouth of New Pass, ' ) Clear Water Harbor, V May 27, 1868. J Begins with light airs from Southward and Eastward, and clear pleasant weather. A little after daylight hove up the anchor, made ;nil and stood down the harbor to the house of a planter to obtain if posssible, some pro visions, our stock being decidedly low. The mosquitoes, owing to our not hauling off rointhe shore ere the breeze died away, at tacked us in great force of numbers, and with sanguinary fierceness. About daylight they seem to have reinforced and attacked us upon our right and left flank, and centre, in such numbers that we were fain to beat a re treat. Calling all hands we were soon away irurn this our place of torment. Were mot miecesful in our first effort to obtain proven der. Had breakfast, mado sail, and stood up for the residence of Capt. 1 Lowe by whom we were treated in a most hospitable manner with plenty of fresh milk and oranges. Ob tained a supply of syrup from him when we repaired on board and made sail for Nichol son’s spring, where we filled up anew with fresh water. This spring is very large and beautiful and most temptingly situated in a green copse in which the birds sang as with joy. The water is as clear as crystal, and in grout abundance. Got in our breakers and stood farther up the bay for Capt. Leo’s, a Portuguese, who has settled here and gone to shark catching, for oil. He, his wife, some five or six children, and an old man, that one without much stretch of imagina tion, might take for an original buccauneer (not buchanau) reside under one roof, and that not of the largest. The building is of thatched palmetto and they literally keep open house if one may judge from the facts of its having no door and the litter about them. Leo was ■jery polite, as was Madame Leo, and the little Leo's were disposed to be attentive, though that was not so pleasant, as foe young cubs were not of the cleanliest, cleanly. Madame Leo gave me the saw of the fish of that name with a number of shells tor which she would accept no pay. I com promised the matter however by shoving a greenback or so into her not particular clean hands for the cubs. Went with old Leo to his plantation to get watermelons and see how well his bananas were getting on. Found but one ripe melon out of the large number upon the vines, which the old fellow shouldered and took to our boat as a present, bidding adieu to the royal family we made sail for the * Anclotes." Having run some eight miles, and feeling a little hungray, ran up to a point jutting out into the gulf, went ashore, and had our dinner and supper. The wind being ahead and very light we hauled off to avoid the mosquitoes, and turned in. Ends with wind the same, and clear, pleas ant weather. BRIGHAM, HOLST & CO. Lemon, Sugar, Soda, Ginger,. Aldace’s Island to port of ns. Made but littlo headway for several hours, the wind being very light -and ahead. The wind slanted, however, enabling us to take our course, and freshening, we were very soon bowling along right merrily. Stood well out to avoid the “ nigger heads,” as a number of black rocks that rise up out of the water along this coast are called, and which are ugly cus tomers to strike against of a dark night, es pecially since they stand alone, with naught apparent of beach or base* At dark made •San Martin’s reef; ran across it -some eight luiles, with a rather strong breeze, and some- *hat rough Bea, that caused our little craft to jnmp along at race-horse speed. At daylight made Sea Horse Light right ahead. Have made eighty-five miles, though we lost a great portion of the day by light head winds. The flood tide having made, we were several hours beating up to Cedar Keys anchorage. At 7:30 came to and made fast at Luttero’s ‘•liarf. Went ashore and had a hearty break- last, which we heartily enjoyed. Thus hath our little cruise ended, and the tiny schooner, “ Lach McIntosh,” with the tender “Anna Maria,” lies ns quietly at an chor as though neither of them ever knew a ught of motion. The trip has had much of Physical discomfort, and positive inconve nience attending it at times, but there has not been a jarring word or symptom of dis content in. the party. It has been replete *ith an interest that goes far beyond any con siderations of mere personal ease and com- iort, and must ever be a source of genuine a nd unalloyed pleasure in the memories it has created, for they are daguerreotypes of God’s beauties of sunshine and shadow, green isle and crystal water, of beauteous flowers the land and of the s^a, and of impres sions ineffaceable of that Almighty Power that hath created so much of beauty in these, and of 'grandeur in the winds and the waves, the fierce lightning and the deafening thun der.
