The Tax Upon Beal Estate.—At the meet ing of Council, oh Wednesday'night, several Aldermen gave notice of their intention to move a reduction of the tax upon real estate, at the next meeting, in consideration'of the city being relieved of a great burden of debt, by the transfer of its stock, in several railroad companies to the Southwestern'Bail- road Company. We protest against any such movement. If a reduction of taxes is io be made let it be general, and not in favor of any one' class of tax-payers—more especially infevorofthe least bnrthened, class. ,For day were wonderfully neat and well executed. They have reason to be very proud of; their pnpils. In one or two branches, how ever some of the young ladies appeared to have used their memory in study, without calling understadirig to aid: them in acquring knowledge; and could readily tell what the hook said, without exactly knowing the mean ing’thereof In literature they exhibited close study, and did remarkably well. Particular pains appearsto have been taken in teaching reading, and the recitations were very fine. Especially praiseworthy were “The Changed Cross,” by Miss Florence LaBoche, and “The Bainy Day,” by Miss Julia Le Buy. Several articles from the Massie School Journal, made up of school compositions of the young ladies, were read. The first, enti tled “ Home,” was a well-written and woman ly article, and finely read. Number two was an al}le and accurate description of the Pu- lnski Monument. Number three we may Bay was to the effect that" You can’t know a man city authorities have appeared loth to impose any great burden upon them while all busi ness, commercial and manufactoring- enter prises have been taxed out of existence. --Small, incomes taxed; fax above what they can be reasonably expected to bear, and even the police officers, who receive scarce sufficient to live upon, are made topayy heajyjtaxJ All this time the rents of houses have been going up steadily. We do not recollect having seen so many people out for: many a long day. Congress and Broughton streets were crowded with ladies, the former being particularly full. All the stores appeared to have plenty of customers, more especially the toy and candy shops. Everybody appeared to be making purchases of some sort or other, and pedestrians had their arms full-of bun dles. Indications of gay and lively times were plainly visible on every hand, Jt was philosophical apparatus, Sc., were destroyed or stolen, as was also a valuable cabinet of curiosities. After the hospital was hroken up, a negro “Buro” school was allowed to use the building during the summer of 1865. In 1866 Gibp«rq| ifilll^n J^oredi .Upbuilds ing to its original owners, and ordered it to be re-furnished at the expense of the United States Government. Since that time the school, , and spoke for forty-five minutes to the young ladies, giving them excellent ad vice, which they will do well to remember. The nett feature o’f the day was an exhibi tion of calesthenics—wand and dumb-bell exercises, which it would have gratified Dr. Dio Lewis to behold. By means of these the young ladies ore educated physically as well as mentalfy, and they appear to have proved Midnight Mass.—The Cathedral- of St. John the Baptist was- densely crowded last evening, on the occasion of the Midnight Ttr.gg Not only were the Catholics ; present in large numbers, but people of ojher de- Alamo, tons, Wdssenhorn, (North German) remen, waiting—Knoop, HannemXn A Co. The Trouble on the Ogeeohee Planta tions.—By particular request, and for pru dential reasons, we made no mention of the fact, yesterday, that warrants had been is sued against the negroes who were instigators of tho trouble on the Ogeechee plantations. Others promised to do the same, and pub lished not only that fact, but the names of the parties against whom the warrants were issued. Beyond a doubt this news was car- lied to the Ogeechee yesterday, and the ends ei justice will be defeated. Thus is jdified at this season the martyrdom of ill that have been slain for the word of God, and whose souls John beheld under the altar, the prophetic vision of the Fifth. Sea strange incident for the holidays! Bt and sorrow are nearly connected, and ii mac serve to moderate an excess ofTEeT-Hmfcr “ Let ontragious ioyousness be chaunged holsoe sadness,” says UdaL The name of Stephen, whose memory celebrated on the 26th, stands first upon ' list of the seven persons whom the A] ordained as Deacons to did them in the of the Church. He is described as a full of faith and of the Holy Ghost; ” and 80 °n gave evidence of it. Besides the woj that he did, his speech before the Council,; as a specimen of terse and rapid generaliza’ is unrivalled, and for fervor , and eloqu has only been equaled by the finest effo: St. Paul himself. All that we kno’ Stephen is contained in the sixth and sevi chapters of the Acts of the Apostles, need not be enlarged upon. In olden times, in England, St. day acquired the name of “Boxing which it there retains even to the p: time; not for pugilistic reasons, hut on that day it was the custom for the humble walks of life to go the ro with a box and Bolicit pecuniary, gifts from patrons and employers. Humphrey intimates that the boxes were earthen and adapted to take in money, bnt not to let it ont until they were “broken like a potter's vessel, into many shares.” On St. Stephen’s Day, many years ago, it was the fashion to exhibit a “merry disport,” or pageant, which, perhaps, had something to do with the Reformation in the Hall of the Inner Temple. Reveling appears to have formed an important part of the scene, if we Tnay, judge from one of the stanzas chanted by the “ancientiest of masters”: •‘Bring hither the bovvle, The brimming brown browle, And quiff the rich juice right merrilie; Let the wln->cup go round ’Till the solid ground Shall quake at the noise of our revelrie. Let wassail and wine ; Their pleasures combine. While we qnaff the rich juice right merrilie; Let ns drink till we die, When the Saints, we relie Will mingle their songs with our revelrie. ” St. John the Evangelist's Day, the 27th, offers but little in the way of traditional cus toms; indeed we find bnt one that is peculiar to it, which is described in a poem by Naogeorguo, about whom nothing is known and which was translated by Bamaby " a poet of the sixteenth century. The are: Fire.—About ten o’clock on Wednesday night, Captain Isaac Bussell and several young inen.vrere in the neighborhood of the bpll tower, on West Broad street, when they dis covered a shed, in the rear of the houses be longing to the estate of Mrs. I. Evans, to be on fire. By hard work they succeeded iu iub.luing the flames before much damage had been done. It was evidently an attempt at in:endiarism, as a quantity of drymoss had b-en placed on the shed and set on fire. But for the timely discovery, the whole block iv ;uM probably have been destroyed, First Steamer Direct from Savannah to Liverpool,—By the advertisement in another column it will be seen that the British steam ship ltoxana, Captain , will be ready to teceive cargo for Liverpool on* the 30th inst.
