It was once the custom in the Catholic Church to say Masses on Innocent’s Day, for the repose of the sonls of the victims who perished in the slanghter. From this the day received the appellation of “Childermas.” In his ‘(Year Book,” Mr. Hone says: “It was formerly the custom to whip np the children on Innocent’s-day morning, in order that the memorial of Herod’s murder of the Innocents might stick the closer, and so, - in a moderate proportion, to act over the emeltie again in kmde ? The day was deem ed itself of espeoial ill omen, and hence the superstitions never married on Childermas- day. Neither upon this day. was it ‘lucky’ to put on new clothes, or pare the nails, or be- gin anything of moment. In the play of Sir John Oklcastle, the prevalence of this belief if instanced by an objection urged to an expe dition proposed on a Friday. ‘Friday, quoth’a, a dismal day.’ This vulgar super stition reaohed the throne, and the corona tion of Ning Edward IY- (according to Jenn) was put off dill the Monday,'because the pre ceding Sunday was Childermas-day. Lastly, a mother, in the Spectator, is made to say at that time: “No, child, if it please God, you shall not go info join-hand on Childermas- day.’”' In some portions of England a oustom pre vailed among the ruder classes, on this day, which, it seems strange to us now, should have been tolerated among civilized people, At daybreak bands of men would go around from house to house, being privileged to enter each, and visit the chambers; where they whipped, upon their naked bodies, all young girls found in bed offer the dawning of day. The lawyers formerly selected Childermas as a period for relaxation; and the “Kipg of the Cockneys” received- especial hetrior on this anniversary occasion. It was, in fact, a holiday to all except those from whom it de rived a part of its name. - The observance of it has fallen into disuse, and we believe ilo special services ore held in any church, at the present day, on this occasion.
