“West haw! Baldy! Whar are ye gwine
to, durnye?"
The remark was addressed to an ancient
flue-bitten horse with one club fore-foot, and
a tail full of cockleburra, harnessed to a con
sumptive-looking. splity-wlioelod carryall,
containing a single bale of dog-tail cotton.
The remark issued from a pair of lips and a
row of almost toothless gums, shut in by u
gruily gray moustache nud an unkempt
beard. The speaker was an old, old man
perhaps the veritable oldest inhabitant. A
wide-brimmed slouch hat shaded his wrinkled
and weather-heaten features, ami his bent
shoulders were sheltered from tho February
xcphyrs'by an old horse blanket, and his thiu
shanks were bandaged with leggins of coarse
jeans, and garters of the same material. Ills
bauds were encased iu white cotton mitteus,
and his shirt was innocent of cravat or paper
collar. In ouo hand he held the hempen
lines which kept him iu communication with
the bit by whic h Babiy, the Rosinaute of the
unnatural dapple, was made to know bis
place whenever he began to feel his oats, and
lu the other ho held a loather wagon-whip,
which, no doubt, had a traditional history iu
tbs family, and with the ]K-rsuasivo eloquence
of which the rough hide of old Baldy, no
doubt, was verv lumiiiar.
This strauguly accoutred turn-out halted iu
Broadway, early iu the day. A slirewd,Wide
awake cotton l*nyer of our acquaintance was
attracted to it by a single bale of cotton which
surmounted the feeble old carryall, and which
#o sorely tried the strength of the uncertain
wheels, and the muscles of the obi horse in
the shafts, as well as tho texture of the patch
ed traces and heiu|HU) geariug which held
horse and wagon together. Our friend, the
man of cottou quomtions.approachedthe team
and addressed the owner, when the following
quaint dialogue ensued:
••What do you ask for your cotton my
friend ?"
“Well, now, 1 haint’t quite concluded yet,
but ye see I waut jest the mostest f kin git
far it."
“The highest market price," suggested the
cotton buyer, “is twenty-six cents. If yours

Me Mad-Stone tn the World.
Fo* thetot tiinfrta onr.lifc we at* fester-
day a genuino mad-stone, and hwird its his
tory from the owner, who inherited it from
his father. The fortunate poweisor w Col.
B. Lee Milam, of Waterford, Marshall coun
ty, Miaaiesippi- Col. Milam is a prominent
citizen of his county, and his statements set
at rest any donbte which we may have had
about the efficacy of mad stone in curing the
bites of mad dogs, cats, snakes, spidei^or
other venomous animals or insects. *ne
mad-stone is about thesixe of a hen egg, as
heavy as so much brick arid rather more
porous, and is of a light clayish color.—
One end is flat as if it had been sawed off
and a grain runs through the stone from end
to end as if it had, in some former age, been
so much wood or bone. About, fifty years
ago this atone was split in three or four
pieces, but was carefully fastened together
with a wire, which still performs its office.
The stone was brought from China, in the
year 1810, by Dr. Barker. The doctor died
in a few years, and the stone was sold at pul»-
lic sale among other property. Mr. James
Milam, the Colonel’s, lather, was tho pur
chaser, and at his death he willed the stone
to the present owner, with the condition that
all the family should have the use of it
as often os necessary, free of charge.—
As to its virtues, Colonel Leo Milam states
that it has been applied with success in
over onq thousand cases, and has only failed
iu two, arid in those the parts affected conhl
not be successfully reached. Ho has used it
himself over two hundred and fifty times.
When applied it adheres as if by section, und
usually remains on ten or twelve hours.
When the poison is all extracted the stone
falls off. During the process a very offensive
stench fills the room, making the uir sicken
ing in the extreme. The stone is then soak
ed in warm water lrom 24 to 36 hours,
when it becomes cleansed and is again ready
for use. Colonel Milam assures us that he
can cure any case of dog, snake, or other
bite, where madness or dissolution has not
actually set in. Cures have been effected
even as long as two weeks after the bite.
Last week the stone was used successfully in
several cases. It is known for many miles
around, and the people come from far and
near to be healed.
Col. Milam has been offered S3,000 for this
wonderful stone, but always refused to enter
tain the proposition. He said playfully yes
terday that he might selli t for S10,000 it the
buyer would always allow him the use ot it.
Great is the mad-stone. We are converted;

Telegraphic MESHAOEti.—The question of
the coufideatifil character of a telegraphic
message has recently been raised in England
ou the trial of the election cases. The judges
presiding over these new tribunals are au
thorized to “ call for papers," but great com
plaints are nindo because Judge Ke<»gh com
pelled the manager of tho Magnetic Tele
graph Company to produce a bundlo of tele
grams bearing on the Dublin election. The
manager protested, assuring the court that
the company bad always considered a tele
gram aa sacred as if a seal were attached to
it The judge, however, advised the mana
ger " not to mind what the compauj' thought;
he had the telegrams, and must produce
them, although, of course, ho had only done
his duty in objecting. ’’ The English jour
nals, in commenting on this order, argue that
telegrams are letters dispatched by means of
electricity, and that, in compelling their pro
duction. Justice Keogh acted in precisely the
same way as if he had instructed one of the
officers of his court to go down to the candi
date’s private residence, break open his wri
ting desk and seize ell his letters.
The Extra Session-—Forney, in his “ oc-
sional ’’ correspondence with his Press, as
serts tW the Forty-First Congress will con
tinue in session at least a month, and, with
the “great obstruction" removed, will dis
pose of public business in a hurry. Let them
repeal the tenure-of-office act, or they will
