The details of the horrible tragedy in Han
nibal, Mo., have come to light The mur
derer has made a curious statement which
we find in the Quincy Whig. It will be re
membered that the case was one in which a
father strangled his daughter, a little girl,
aged about eight years, and cut her little
heart out, and drank the blood from it while
it was yet quivering. Since the perpetration
of the crime, the man has been declared in
sane, and the authorities at Hannibal have
sent him to the jail at Palmyra.
A day or two ago ho wrote the following
statement: “I, son of God, formerly Sebas
tian Hupter, wish to say a few words to the
world. I believe 1 was the father of five chil
dren; one of them died; another was stran
gled by its mother. She was crazy, that was
the cause of the death of both children. God,
our Father, willed it thus—His will was done,
and she is free. She has procured a di
vorce from me. I believe this to be the cause
of the death of the little child. I killed it, it
is true, but I was not the cause of her death,
and therefore do not feel myself guilty of
the crime. believed to have seen the devil
iu her (the child). ‘ 1 had mode a covenant

with God, the Father, to catch the devil if I
should have an opportunity. I now believe
her mother is dead, aud I have seen her
mother's devil in her. After she was divorced
from me, she wanted to marry me again. I
had sworn by God, our Father, never to live
with her again. I did not wish to change my
good spirit fora bad one, and, therefore, did
not wish to break my word. I still have two
children; they belong to the male sex, and,
therefore, sous of God. The three that are
dead were of the female sox, and were daugh
ters of their mother. It came into my mind,
God, the Father, gave it to me, that He was
once married, and His wife secured a divorce
from Him because He did not obey her. His
wife's name was Devil. Man says^Aoam and
Eve were in the paradise, aud I swear that
he who follows me will get there. Man says
there was » certain apple tree in paradise, to
eat of the fruit thereof God, the Father, had
forbidden • bis children. God, the Father,
died of grief and sorrow. He was an in
dustrious man and a good garilner. His di
vorced wife left Him and went to another
land, and left Adam and Eve with Him. After
the Father died the devil returned to para
dise and desirpd her children to obey her.
Sho took an apple from the forbidden tree
and gave it to Eve to eat She took it and
ate it; then Hhe gave one lo Adam, but Adam
would not eat, he would not obey the devil,
and therefore, he became odious to all per
sons—that is, to the devil and the woman,
and so am I. Man docs not believe in Christ
because he is not as firm as I. He did not
complete his work. He was a coward, and
was not the man I am, to follow up what he
had promised his Father, to wit: To catch
the deviL He was not firm, the devils have
caught him, and he had to die. If you do
not believe me do not let me die, but have me
beheaded, and if my head rises then I have
told the truth; but if it falls I have been a
liar. The paradise or death is open to me.
There are but two ways—life and death. Hell
is the earth—heaven the paradise. When
you have beheaded me bury my body in the
middle of my garden, with my feet toward
the Eiut”
The poor maniac, after drinking the blood
of the child, said that he would never again
want for food or nourishment, that the blood
had given him life everlasting. Since the
perpetration of the deed he has not partaken
of a mouthful ol food. The case is, indeed,
a remarkable one, and the statement he has
made is one of the most singular productions
we have ever read.

The above analysis indicates a Manorial Super-Phosphate of Lime of the Highest Grade
ordinarily found in the American Market. Its large amount of Soluble Phosphoric Acid sup
plies on active nutriment for the development and maturity of the ft'uitogc. The Sulphuric
Acid which it contains, by chemical affinity with the elements of most Soils, contribute to its
Fertilizing Properties. To show its best effects this Super-Phosphate, should be applied un
der and in contnct with the Seed, and with a moderately shallow covering of Soil.

Dead or Alive—A Strange Case.—On
Thursday, the 4th instant, a young lady,
daughter of a dentist living on Hudson street,
on coming home from a party, complained of
sutfering from a chill. After endeavoring to
get warm at the fire down stairs, Hhe retired
to her chamber and went to bed. Here Hhe
was visited by her mother, to whom she re
lated her H}’inptomH. Thinking that some
hot application to the feet would prove effi
cacious, Mrs. proceeded to the kitchen,
filled several bottle* with hot water and re
turned to her daughter’s chamber, only to
find that life had apparently departed, aud
that her daughter was dead. All due prep
arations were made for the funeral, and the
uwiftl services were performed oh Monday
last at the house; but a gentleman to whom
the young lady was engaged to be married
protested against the burial of the body, as
serting that his fiance was not dead, bnt only
iu a trance. Hi’s assertion was thought to be
well-founded, as, on examination, it was found
that, although the heart bad ceased to beat,
or the blood to pulsate perceptibly through
the veins, th e corpse had not lost its warmth.
Accordingly the body of the young lady is
still kept at her residence, in Hudson street,
awaiting delopment of the fact whether she
is in a state of trance or syncope, or actually
dead.—N. Y. Commercial.

A Hint to Emigrants.—A pioneer settler
in Wisconsin writes us that some of the new
ly arrived emigrants in that region are suffer
ing under chagrin and disappointment—but
for » very good reason. We give the words
of our correspondent's note:
“Some people think they can come here
and find improved farms, with spreading
meadows and blooming orchards aud good
houses, and corner groceries to lonnge in,
aud trout brooks to fish in, and all the thou
sand comforts ol the East, with land at gov
ernment prices. It takes work, and hard
work, to carve a farm out of the wild woods—
work and hardship, and strong nerve and
good grit. It takes a man to do it; no child 1
play, or milk-and-water soft-shell subject can
succeed. Don’t try! If you expect to get a
good house and farm you must pay for it. If
you would eat, you must pay, or work, or
steal. Take your choice !”
Wo commend this sturdy pioneer’s wise
counsel to those who intend to push west
ward to try their fortunes. Woods are not
subdued, nor lands reclaimed, nor communi
ties formed, nor civilization advanced, nor
States made, nor nations cemented, without
hard and steady labor. The buy man should
not go West. It is no.place for him.— 2»eu>

CzvnjTX is a Fortune. —Civility is a for
tune itself, for a courteous man always
succeeds well in life, and that when persons
of ability fail. The famous Dnke of Marl
borough is a case in point. It was said of
him by one contemporary that his agreeable
manners often'converted on enemy into s
friend; and by another, that it was more
pleasing to be denied ft favor by his grace
than to receive one from any other man. The
gracious manner of Charles James Fox pre
served him from dislike, even at a time when
he was politically the most unpopular man in
the kingdom. The world’s history is full of
such examples of success obtained l>y civility.
The experience of every man furnishes, if we
recall the post, instances where conciliatory
manners have made the fortunes of physi
cians, lawyers, divines, politicians, aud, in
deed, individuals of all pursuits. To men,
civility is what 'beauty is to women—it is a
general passport to favOr-ft letter of intro
duction written in language that every one
understands, .,. .
This playful patter of the polysyllables m
from the Zanetville (Ohio) Signal: “A crea
ture no stolid Mid pachydermatous as be who
exudes malevolence through the Conner, re
mains quite indifferent to being repeatedly
proved a malicious libeller. His mental or
ganization is so obtuse as to be impervious to
the light that Exposes his hideousnejs to
view. He is like the ostrich in the fabler

the ostrich, however, he odds- the cant of*
hypocritical Pharisee and the spleen of hypo
