WniTKWASH.—WhiUwMh, sayslbe Journal
of ChrmiMry, is one of the most valuable arti
cle in tho world when properly applied. It
not only prevents tbs decay or wood, bnt
condnees grentiy to the healthfulness of all
buildings, whether of wood or atone. Out
building* end fences, when not painted,
should he supplied once or twice a year with
a good coat of whitewash, which should be
prer J “
r:»red in t^e following way: Take a clean.
»r-tight barrel, or other suitable cask, snd
put into it a half bushel of limo. Slack it
by jwuring water over it boiling hot, and in
miilicient quantity to cover it five inches
doeprwnd stir it briskly till it is thorough
ly slaked. When the slaking has
been thoroughly effected, disfiolvo it in
water, and add to it two pounds of etd-
v.lmto cf zinc and one of common salt;
these will causa the wash to harden and pre
vent its cracking, which gives an unseemly
appearance to the work. If desirable, a
binntiiul cream color may be communicated
to the above wash by adding three pounds of
yellow ochre; or a good load color by the
addition of lamp black or ivory black. For
fawn color, add lour pounds of umber. Turk
ish or American—the latter is tbs cheapest—
one pound of Indian red, one pound of com
mon lamp black. For common stone color,
add four pounds of raw umber and two
pounds of lamp blnck. This wash may be
applied with a common whitswash brush,
auil will be found much superior, both in
appearance and durability, to the common
whitewash.

PwtPJOUXO FOR THE Nui. Cexscb.- Mr.
Hough, Superintendent of the Census, is at
work iu assisting the chairman of ths House
C.-usns Comnmtoe. Ths sub-committee,
consibiing ol Messrs. Garfield, Lafiin, Wil
kinson, t.'ullom nud Haidemcn, will meet
hero on the 25th inat. to prepare a bill to
provide for tuo taking of the next census.
Sir. Hough, aided by one clerk, is making on
analysis of the direct methods of taking the
census practiced by foreign countries, and
arranging and classifying the several divisions
of the work. It is expected that the plan of
leaving blank forms at each houae. with in-
btructioUH drawn up in the simplest possible
form, to guide the householder in filling up
the blank, will be ndopted. Notice will be
given to till these blanks up on a given day,
rnosi prolmblv the first day of Jane next, and
keep thorn until Called for. Those forws which
may net be filled up when called for will be
completed by the census officers with refer
ence to the condition of tbs family on the
first of June. No appropriation has yet been
made for printing blanks or providing the
necessary material, so that all this work will
have to be done between the day the appro
priation is made and the first of June.

Gor.p AN*n Greenbacks — Important Decis
ion or Chief JcstickCuake.— A case came up
in the United States Court, at Richmond, on
Friday, of which the points were these:
Messrs. <\ M. Fry .t Co., of Liverpool,
brought suit against W. H. Hobbs adminis-
trntor for about £3,600 sterling, claimed
amount of drafts overdrawn on shipments of
some eight hundred boles of cotton, con
signed to Fry A Co., through Messrs. McU-
waiue A* Co., of Petersburg. The account
was proved, and tbo main point iu the case
was \< hi ther judgment should be rendered
for th»- amount of tho sterling bills converted
into gold dollars, or whether the difference
between gold and greenbacks should be
added to the amount in gold dollars. Chief
Justice Cha>»e decided that the sterling bills
being pnynble in Liverpool were gold con
tracts, and that the difference between green
backs and gold mint 1*» added to the sum of
dollars iu gold. The jndgment amounted tp
about $2fi,0o0.
