A special meeting of the Savannah Firs Depart-

poae of consultation and the reception of the reports
of the several committees appointed to arrange s pro
gramme and take the necessary action with a view to
the celebration of the Annul Farads of the Savan
nah Fire Department
Much anxiety has been felt by t ta gallant body rep
resenting the Department aa to what would be done
towards making the day a general holiday for a noble
body of men who, without fee or reward, devote their
energies to the public good and the public welfare.
The meeting was called to order by Chief Engineer
Roberta, and the following members of the Depart
ment answered to their names:
*Wir*t Assistant Engineer Butler, Second Assistant
Engineer Hvroll, President Maddox, of the Metropoli
tan; President Bussell, of the Oglethorpe; Foreman
Barron, of the Washington; President Dixon, of the
Mechanic; Foreman Schwarz, ct the Germania; Presi
dent White, of the Marshall Uoee, and Second Officers
Slavers. Kaufman. Branch, and Godfrey, of the Ger
mania, Oglethorpe, Metropolitan and Marshall Hose
respectively.
The Committee appointed by a meeting of the
representatives of the soveral fire organizatlone re
ported that they bad performed the duty assigned
them, aud had met in consultation a Committee of the
City Council, and aa tho result of tbelr action begged
leave to report that the City Council had granted an
appropriation ot two thousand dollars towards the
projier celebration of the approrching Anniversary of
the Savannah Firo Department
A discussion took place, which was participated in
by several members of the Board, concerning the
arrangements.
The Committee appointed to arrange and report a

the lovers of sterling old KngllA comedy. The piece
Was moat admirably performed throughout, and waa
moat heartily enjoyed by the audience.
Mlaa Laura Keene, the accomplished actress and
sucoesstnl manageress, takas her first benefit ia Sa
vannah to-night, when will be presented for the first
time on our boards the popular sensational drama of
“Frou-Frou," which for the year past has been the
rage in Parie. Cootraating Mias Keeno’a version of
the original Freuch with that of Mr. Daly, which haa
had auch a successful run at the Fifth Avenne Thea
tre, New York, the Charleston Xews, to which we are
Indebted for a sketch of the plot of the piece, says:
*• We may be permitted to doubt wbethertthat accom
plished dramatist bat retained the Ufa and sparkle of
tna original, as well aa is done by Miss Laura Keene.
This lady is a good linguist, aa well aa a polished
actress.and in her translation of ‘Frou-Frou,* her
dramatic experience gives point and zest to her philo-
logical knowledge. No one but a master of stage situ
ation as well aa of the French tongue, could have so
happily translated Into English the peculiar events
and indiscnbable dialogue of the curious original."
The words “Frou-Frou," although almost untrans
latable, are really an Onomatopoetic phrase, describ
ing the rustling sound made by a aiikeu robe, or mau-
tle. as its wearer sweeps aloug corridor or over polls h-
1 ed floor. As a nick-name it may be takeu as the French
equivalent of the Euglish “Harum-Scarum.” The
play to which it givos a name, is a family picture after
the French style—that ia with as much laahion, and
as Uttle family, aa an indulgent society will allow.
The heroine “Gilberte" or ••Frou-Frou” (Mias Keene)
la a dashing high-spirited girl, w ho cares iiitie for
love and less for lovers, yet sees matrimony in the
distance as an !unpleas»nt something which cannot
well be avoided. “Lo Comte do Valreas'’ (Mr. Otis,)
one of the golden youths who are the pci horrors ol
the drawing-rooms of Paris, is desperately enamored
of “Frou-Frou.” Hia youthful loves, of which he
carried, and he then offered the following: That the
members present sign the roll of membership.
Carried. _
Dr. 3iytn moved also, that a Treasurer pro test, be-
appointed to receive the funds ot the Association,
and report and refund receipts to the Treasurer of
Association. The President appointed Dr. Crawford
aa Treasurer pro tern. *
Dr. Muagrove. wnile the rules wtre suspended,
offered the following;
Resolved, That from 11 to 1 p. m. each day be de
voted to discussion aud Interchange of op in km upon
such subjects in medicine and its collaterals aa may
legitimately come before thia body. Carried.
Dr. Charters moved that an assessment of $J be
mode upon ea*.h member for the year 1810. Carried
Dr. Blackshear then read a letter fttm Dr. R. M.
Smith, of Athena, and the Secretary waa instructed
to record so much ol it aa rela'ed to this body.
The Committee appointed on a resolution offered
by Dr. Thomas, reported aa toilows:

The Xews aays the developments of the plot afford
ample sc pe for all the intouaity of actiug for which
Mis# Keene is so justly celebrated, aud that the play
as produced in that city exceiled in artistic actiug, ss
well as in the dramatic situations with which it

The Courier, alluding to the character of “Coinpte

ously fascinating.^Outsidc of this, it is a charming
play, and as presented by M t e* Keene aud her com

alternate tears and laughter. Miss Keene, iu the
treble role was unusual y successful. Her ••Gilberte,”
(Frou-Frou) waa thoroughly conceived, well studied

minded woman, was well played. It was more than
well played; it was a realization as much aa could be
desired, more than could bo expected even from on
actress so accomplished as Mi<4 Keene.
The large and gratified audiences that have attend

unanimous appreciation of our theatrical public of
her efforts, both as manageress and actress, aud w v
