To the, Editor of the M)W« Register :
I hod been" thinking tot some time -of
sending for some extreme Southern paper,
and finally concluded on the Register. I
have been particular^ interested in your dis-
cum-ion with vonr Tribune /fiend, h is not
strange that the Southern people, after the
outrages that haft been perpetrated upon
theufAiy the North, should feel like having
nothing to do Fitb $hir Hatton* people, and
although I am of Northern stock entirely, T
see how naturally a Southern man should take
lif) this idea. From a certain Southern stand
point it is natural also that the Northern
Democrat should be included in this feeling
of distrust. ,89 Tar A* ibeNorthern Monpiel,

Most of this class are scoundrels, nt least po
litically. Bat the strongest thing about tha
matter is that aome men of good sense, and
HockAt men. still adhere to the rotten party
who ia destroying a free government
The Tribute, however, seems inclined to
some confidence in that class of Demo-
known as Copperheads . Then you can
inform tha Tribune from me that nine-teutta
of the Northern Democrats are Copperhead •
Many ot this class, it ia true, joined in tte
war, bat they were utterly deceived as to its
objects, and are heartily sorry for it now.
X'Southern man has very little conception
of the backbone it requires to be known as
‘«ai6pponent of the war while it was in pro
gress. Men in business in many places had
to make np their minds either to abandon
their business, and in many cases their only
means of sustenance, or to join in this war
whoop. For my part, I rid a former, and
Was not dependent on a crazy popnlueo, but
I fully felt the atrenutU oi pleasure I had to
resist; I felt it tuy duty not only to think,
but to speak. The consequence was that my
friends feared for my life and the safety of
my dwelling. This township cave Lincoln
over twenty-five hundred majority, but we
never gave an inch to them, until now we
carry the township.
Your friend of the Tribune need not blame
Northern Democrats so urach for yonr pres
ent deplorable political condition. I mink
the South is rally a* much to blame. Tossy
nothing of Hecesreion, which 1 think was play
ing into lh*j hands of the Northern traitors,
the course of. a large cku-s of the South has
served to encourage tlie tuoagrels and din-
hearten the true friends of liberty both North
and Sontii. To say nothing • of such men as
Joe Brown, of Georgia, General Longfttreet,
etc., who have basely betrayed their country
for place, you have a large class who de
clared llial there was no hope, they mnNt
just accept the situation. There are hundreds
of thousands oi Northern llspnblicans who
are utterly opposed to political negro equali
ty; and if tn« leaders of tho Northern Demo
cracy and the people of the South had iu-
snued that the ouly terms the Government
conld impose on the South was obedience to
the Constitution, we could have carried tbree-
fourths of the Stitts on that issue.
Andrew Johuson's so-culled “Amnesty oath”
provided that before men could exercise tho
rigUUi or Clti*-W«v *b«gr -»••* a^ar mpKntU
and abide bv the emancipation proclamation,
etc. Now, Johnnou hud no lawlul right to
exact any condition or terms further than the
Constitution, any more than the King of
Dahomey hud, even >upposing the Govcm-
ertimeut had the right of coercion ; anti this
ri^ht, once acquiesced in, all the terms ne-
oessury to place every Southern State in tho
hands of mongreiiMU followed as a natural
oonseqdence. When we objected to that doc
trine, our mongrel opponents answered that
we were claiming more for our Southern
tnends than they asked themselves; that they
were willing to Accept the situation, and this
to a gr. at extent seemed trpe; at least it had
the efltcf of weakening the •'Democrat!
leaders in the Nor£h,' j}n*iIbisira# emp^ti opr
.defers overripe*. .
No*, $t this time I qo ont find one
lican out of ten but who acknowledges that
the Fifteenth Amendment is an outrage, and
Very many are oppoaed to negro suffrage. If
! the ptuwyRatip leaders and papers‘would
constantly point oat the dafig*T8 ot consoli
dation, and refhse to acknowledge the legality
Of amendments that Stales ware forced to
adopt; never craning to disown all connec
tion with negroes, we would receive enough
of votes {torn Bepyblicafie, who are heartily
ashamed of their, incasgre, to carry the elec
tions iff most of the Northern States, Bqt afl
long as Democrats and Democratic papers
come out in”fnso/r of aoceptimj the situuUo*,
and talk as if ail those, outrages were Urrtfflc-
abtu/tted, what motive can disgusted Repub
licans have in cOipfnfeotvr to the Democracy ?
The Democraiio party, if.it is not acting too
hypocrite, js preparing to carry out those
abominations, aud if they are hypocrites and
deceivers, Republicans have had enough of
soali a party already. Therefore, by such
weakness, we fail to make it the interest of
honest Republicans to come to ns, while we
disgust aud dishearten all true Democrats
who have labored for the preservation of our
liberties.
There never was a time when the opposi
tion to the Democracy, especially the tnasi-ce,
were eo little attached to their party, ami
if the Demooratio press and politicians were
honest and faithful l would have no mow
do ibt that the party would bo successful in
our future elections than 1 doubt the tain's
rising. But we must remember that the op
position has the money wherewith to purchase
our leading press and speakers, and the peo
ple, nufortunately, can be taught almost any
thing. 'The Now* York World, and even the
Chicago Times, with all its ability aud goods
bite, has done more to destroy Democracy in
the North than old Horace Qreeley and hie
partner (Satau) combined.
