Showing an inorease of $18,301,626 60 for
the first eight months of tbo current year
over the collections for the same period of
1868-9. This is a gratifying exhibit; not be
muse an increased revenue is needed by tbe
Government, but because it shows that a
mater ial reduction of taxation can be effected
without depleting the National Treasury.
Under a prudent and economical manage
ment cf tbe pnblio business and an honest
defcire on the part of Cougrees to retrench in
every way compatible with the maintenance
of our national dignity, there is no reason
why many of the less important sources of
revenue should not be dropped from the tax
list. War ux« s are well enough in war times
and ai» a nation we paid them cheerfully; but
now that a redact ion is posiable, the burden
of unnecessary taxation will not long be
patiently borne by tbe people. CongTOis has
long enough shirked tbe important doty be
fore it, and should its adjournment find the
wotfe still unaccomplished, the popular de
mand will make itself heard at t .o ptwla ui
the detriment of the party in power.—A. T,

1 Bi.oody Aravin In Auami.—Owing to the
lateness of the hour we could only mention of
fibs killing of William Jackson by Doc Davis,
in Sunday’s paper. The affray happened iu
David Palmer's 6tore, jup* beyond the upper
city bridge, about 9 o’clock Saturday nigbt
Jackson was a fisherman, Davis is an em
ployee of tbe Eagloand Phenix Manufactur
ing Company. Each was aged about 19 years.
Tbe difliculiy, us told us, originated with
Jarkson, who was somewhat affected by
liquor, before they entered the store. After
entering it, Davis secured a pistol from be
hind the counter. Tbe difficulty was again
renewed, each employing sharp words. Jack-
;«Dn draw a knifs-aod.cut Davis several times
when the Utter fired. Jackson then threw
Davis and commenced slashing him again,
when Davis fired a second shot, and begged
tha* Jin-1 son be taken off him. Weakness
finally mode Jackson roll off. Upon examina-
tior, it yyts found that Jackson bad received
tv* o trails in his body—ono in the ‘side, the
ot or in the right breast He died Sunday,
•pf; ht about 10 o’clock. Davis is very badly
cut in various places, the severest wound be-
inp on the inside of the thigh. He will,
however, get well. Coroner , of Lee
county,.held an iuquest over Jackson
body yesterday afternoon.—CvUmbuM Sun..
The Amnesty UisaaaE.—The much talked

of this fact aroused tbe extremists of the
Radicals,' who beset General Grant, and have,
by misrepresentations of tbe feelings of the
Southern people, induced him to forego his
laudable purpose. He is becoming more and

hands of these schemers is but an in»:&u-
