The Threatened Indian War.—Thccanso
of the recent raid ou tlie Union Pacific rail
road by the Dakota cation, and tbe threaten
ed geueral Indian war, involving nn expense
to the Government of $50,000,000, is explain
ed by a letter from General Sanborn, one of
the peace conimissioneks of 1808 to Vincent
Coeyeb. By the treaty of 1851 tho Dakotas
were to have tho whole of tho PfAtie Vulley
for ten years. This treaty was agreed to by
some of the old and influential chiefs, bat
rejected by Bed Cloud, Single Horn and tbe
warriors generally. They kept quiet, how
ever, for tho ten years, alter which they com
menced depredations.
Io 1809 tbe Government, in order to avoid
war, concluded a treaty with them looking to
their oltiraate location ou a reservation, aud
among tho promises made was that they
should be furnished clothing and supplies,
and permitted to tradu with the people io tbo
adjacent country. The Government has
failed to comply with these promises, and
hence the trouble.. Tbcro are 12,000 of these
