DEMOCRATIC SIGSfS IX LOXDOX
The Liberal League Protea la Asaleat
endowing the Nanhloecei of Lon
Iron the Treasury.
London, December 11.
A large meeting of the Liberal League, held
to-night, bos protested against giving a dowry
from the national treanury to tbe Princess
.»« Louise. Bitter speeches were made, con
trasting the enormous pauperism of the
country—137.000 persons being borne on the
lihtx in London alone—and the lact that peo
ple die in England every hour of starmuon,
with the fact that the Queen drawa four hun
dred thousand pounds a year from the trea-
sury, besides tire large sums paid to other
members of the royal family, while yet her
Unjesty does nothing whioh can ba said to
be in the least a return for this huge outlay.
It was said that the Queen might imitate the
.example net her by the poorest workman and
proTide lor her own children.
A resolution was adopted declaring it to be
the duty of all men who marry to maintain
their own families without asking for parish
or national relief! It was moved also that an
•rtr 1 ** mads to tha entire peoplo to decide
by tha ballot whether they will not supersede
the present cumbersome and inhuman sys
tem of government by a republic.
Among tbe speakers were Messrs. Howell,
Mann and Eocariua.
A PEACE MOVEMENT ON AMERICAN QUESTIONS.
An influential committee has been formed
In London, of which Mr. Thomas Hughes
h«s been nam-d as chairman, and which in
cludes many members of Parliament, for tbe
purp «e of obtaining all possible security for
the malnteuNnce of peace with America.
Th- Commutes, which was formed some
time ago, baa considered it to be inexpedient
to iak» public action until the Eastern ques
tion should ba settled. An impression pre
vails that tha extreme Canadian views of the
fUh-«ry qursdon cannot be sustained.
Tbe proposal to buy the Alabama claims is
regarded iu London as a big job, concocted
probably by a clique which bus already pur
chased tbe cMm* at a small figure, and in
tends to make them at least a hundred per
cent, greater. Thera are those here who »»re
confident the American Government would
like to have the cairns enhanc-d in order to
make tha grievance wem greater. — World.
