wiped away the disgrace that attached to
them through their former representative,
Whittemove. Rainey is a rather flue-looking
man, who is evidently pnffed up with his
own importance. His credentials were pre

Protest from Cardinal AntonelU.
Tbe following fa a translation of Cftrdiaxl
Antonelhfr protest against tbe occupation cf
tbe Qairinal:
[From the gtanxe of the Vatican, Nov. 9.1
••To the attempts already committed by
tho government of Florence against the do
main of tbe Holy See, another one baa just
been added against the special property of
tbe Roman Pontiff.
“ General La Marmora, by bis lettor, dated
tbe 7th instant, imparting to tbe undersigned
Cardinal-Secretary of State tbe nnanimons
decision of the Council of Ministeru. taken
after mature examination, fiat tbe Palazo on
the Qairinal ought to be considered as belong
ing to tbe properly of the State, engaged Lim
to provide that the StAte should enter into
possession, by delivering tbe key*, and by
delegating a person who should be present at
tbe necessary formalities, and at the inven
tory of tbe fnmitnre and other objects there
existing; to that effect be designated the fob
rutmilk, w uia» cum uo uuni^i
lowing day, and fixed tho hour.
“It la really surprising that a Council of
Ministers should vet themselves up for judges
to determine the right of other people’s
property, and particularly that of a palace,
which, belonging to the Roma*! Pontiff and
l>eing a residence of theirs, is called apostolic,
which has for three centuries been their sum
mer residence, and which for so very long a
timefbns been consecrated to the nse of tbe
Conolaveand Apostolic Secretaries.
“The nnderaigued, feeling himself quite
secure by the strong and irrefragable argu
ments which permitted him to relate the de
mand, and fulfilling, beside, the daty of hie
efflee—for he is still Prefect of the Holy Apos
tolic Palaces—has not hesitated to declare
that he would never assent to any act which
could give ever so remote an appearance of
consent to a spoliation of tho kind, and con
sequently has refused to deliver the keys of
the apertments of the Holy Father, the door*
of which had already been arbitrarily sealed.
“Ia spite, however, of this declaration, and
contrary to the respect and prerogatives of
sovereignty and immunity, extraterritoriality
and princeiy pre-eminence with which per
sona want to make the world believe one
would sniround the sapreme chief of the
Church, General La Marmora proceeded to
the most blamable violence; for, scarcely was
the fixed hoar elapsed, when his delegates,
after baring broken the lucks of the doors,
penetratod into the interior, tskiag thereby
l>oesc8«ion of tho Palace in the Qairinal,
property of tbe Roman Pontiffs.
“Therefore, the Holy Father, not being
able to resist by force, yet not wishing to see
prejudiced the right of property in the said
!»o1mcch, and in all the objects there inclosed,
has given orders to the Cardinal who writes
this to issue bis formal protest, and to com
municate it to your Excellency, begging you
to bring it to the notice of the Royal Govern
ment, in order to persnade it once more of
tbe outrages his Holiness is suffering, and
excite it to act so that there should be finally
(una votfrO put a atop to the intolerable con
dition of things created in his dominions by
the Government of Florenoe.

Raleigh, December 10.—Four colored leaguers,
charged with being part of an organized band
of barn burners, whose incendiarism for
months past has terrified the people in Upper
Wake and Chatham counties, were brought
in and committed to jail this evening. The
evidence is said to be conclusive, one of the
parties having turned State’s evidence. The
whole of their doings will be exposed, and all
tbe colored Ku-KJnx brought to tend. No
doubt many of the crimes charged npon the
Kn-Klnx were done by this band. Crowds
of excitfd negroes gathered around tbe guard,
and, as is usual in such cases, could ace no
good reason for the arrests. The negro has
been so potted of late out here that the bulk
of them seem to look upon the arrest of one
of their number, under any circumstances,
ss unwarranted persecution and a casus belli.
