• From ths Washtagtou Patriot.:
Peace.
Dearer than victory, higher than glory,
sw*eter than love, L peace. Without it, faith
would be hopeless, aud religion uusanctified.
Triumph itself is inglorious unless pecce de-
Ft-tnds aud alights ou its laurels. This uni
versal and beuutifnl aspiration of man 1ms
never gilded his troubled history with a token
more affecting than the glad, flrvent, and
heartfelt gratulation of all patriotic people
over the end of our civil war. Differing
strangely as to method*, the demand and the
hope were so universal, that hlranguers the
most hardened never failed to profess early
reconciliation as the supreme object of their
measures. Though all knew that unprinci
pled ambition or gnilty apprehension alone
retarded good-will, the blame w*« differently
bestowed by citizens, who, with sinoere and
identical ze«l, exulted in new ardor when a
change of Administration approached. From
every altar and “very firemde between Canada
and Mexico came tbe same brave and gentle
call, of power and of pathos, for a peace
maker.
The uuealeubiting tribute of foe as of
friend, lavished in all the generosity of revi
ving fraternization, had invested Geneial
Grant with a tutored transcendent trust.
Fiush of such honors, he stood charged with
au QUtpent power of beneficence never be
fore held in a solitary baud. Accepting the
nomination as a Belfisbly sagacious party, he
publicly disowned its partisan restraint*, aud
then, in words that struck into a ptean the
despot key of every bosom, he proclaimed
to tne people, “Let ns have peace.’’
In vain wa* it demonstrated that his name
was but a refuge for convicts of political
crime: that a revival of constitutional justice
was the true pith to peace. The word* of
msgnaniuiity were louder than the postulates
of prudence. They were a new Evangel. Liks
the Shepherds who left their flock*, tie
people heard the promise of gladnt-*), saw
the star, and followed, without questiou and
without del »y. Grant—even this most na-
spiritual and insensate of all who have ever
been made trnstees of beneficent power -
Grant, dumb of thought and ignorant of real
greatness—was chosen as their organ of ben
ediction by tlii* too trusting people.
No confidence was ever so flattering and
inspiring; no abuse of confidence was ever so
contemptuous and excessive. Twenty months
of sid experience have discouraged tbe fra
ternal. disgusted the magnanimous aud sick

From tbe whole body of Republican party
leaders, he selected thoae most conspicuous
f >r partisan excess, and allied himself with
them, repulsing the conciliatory, the calm,
and the conscientious.
He patronized score* of adventurer*. !

South, reeomm'ndations of wisdom and
mercy, proposed from time to time by his
ablest and mo*t respectable supporters from
that section.
He has on all occasion* manifested a most
unseemly impatience whenever circumstances
invoked his high magisterial civil functions,
and treated with distrust every parly adhe
rent professing faith in tbe Constitution. He
has. without decency or dignity of office, ha
bitually signalized his unreserved contempt
for civil right, civil courts, and civil govern
ment.
He has authorized member* of bis Admin
istration to threaten tbe people of sovereign
States to their faces with military punish
ment, should they presume to adopt tbe in
terpretations of their own court* of law regu
lating their own elections.
He actualiy invaded the great States of
New York and Pennsylvania, and through
his multiplied agents and military subordi
nates, usurped control over the two largest
cities of the country, and policed them with
troops, for the alternative purpose of coerc
ing free suffrage or of inciting freemen to re
sistance. which could afford pretext for armed
precision of tbe States and cities of the
North.
He has magnified the military prerogative
of a supreme civil ruler beyond all modern
precedent, even to indacting tbe armv into
the office of special Executive confide
and converting the mansion cf the President
of tbe United States into a sridipr’a barrack.
7* this the man who said, “Let us have
peace?” Such is his peace—a peare that
makes men sigh and women weep; that re
opens personal fends, revives the lust of
lawless adventures, and broadens the grin ol
rejoicing malevolence.
