*1 hr Balloon Ascension.
One of the principal topics of street conversation
just now 1* the contemplated balloon ascension of Pro*.
8amnet A. King, which will take piece oa Monday, the
26th instant, from this city. The exact point, we be-
the asoenaion will be mads, though several have been
spoken of. If we have not been misinformed, tbe lest
a/cenvfpn was made from Armory Hell yard. We ere
adviaad that the t. inmandlng officer at tbla poet bee
kindly tendered the nae of the United States Barracks
yard upon this occasion if it should be regarded as
the most eligible point. In order to defray current
expenses necessary for the inflation of tbe balloon, e
committee of gentleman arc now taking up s collec
tion la different parta of ths city, and we trwat that
all to whoa application may be made will be aa liberal
as possible, so that the intrepid wronaut may be well
paid to' hit time end trouble while affording onr
rltix„na the opportunity of witnessing this grand
spectacle.
T.> msny of our readers a brief sketch of Professor
King may not prove uninteresting. He is the
Napoleon of Ida profession, and Is, ws bellsve, the
oldest n-ronaut living, aa he la certainly the moat
daring and skillful. And ons grest reason why w#
shall experience s more than ordinary degree of
pleasure, In introducing him to our readers, may bs
found in the fact that daring "our late little on-
pleaaanteess," when every other vroneut took
especial pains to thrust themselves upon tbe notice
Of tbe United States Government, Professor King, ac
knowledged by them ell as their superior in all mat-
tors connected with wrial navigation, kept himself
aloof, attended strictly to his own business, and
solemnly declared that no act of bis should aver
help, eld or assist" the tyrants of tbe North In snbju-
gating their Southern brethren, simply because they
bad naked to be let alone.
Professor King la by birth a Philadelphian, having,
been born in the Quaker City forty-two years ago. He
had scarcely attained his majority whan the balloon
a«censioni of Wise, the leronant, attracted his atten
tion, and turned his thoughts to the «tudy of aarlal
navigation. Every work that contained the least In
formation relative to that subject, he eagerly seised
upon, nor was be satisfied Until tbe whole theory of
balloon inflation was ex familiar ko him as housshold
word®. Nor did he stop here, he entered into e cor
respondence with every prominent wronsut. as well
ea other men whose scientific attainments were such,
that they would probably possess the Information of
which he was then in search, end then commenced to
make experiments In that cool, methodical, qniet
way, which a'.l acquainted with the Professor will st
once recognize as one of his prevailing characteristic*.
After many and repeated attempts, some of which
were failures so disheartening that almost any other
man would hsTe abandoned the project in despair.
Prof. Kin* finally succeeded in manufacturing a bet-
loon to bit entire satisfaction, and at twenty-three
•rears of ago made bis first ascension ou ths 26th day
of September, in tbe year 1h51, from the Zoological
Gardens, at I sirmount, in the preeenoe of tbonnanda
of spectators who had assembled to witness his first
attempt at soaring above tbe clouds. The voyage,
though short, was an eminently successful one, and
determined Prof. Xing to follow up the profusion
thus commence*! for the remainder of bis life. Sot.
sequ-iit ascouaions were made at different points in
Pennsylvania and New Jertey, and St wae not toeg
before the reputation of Prof. King, as s bravo, skill,
ful and dashing e-ronaut. was firmly eetab ithed
everywhere that the sclsnoe of sailing in mid-air was
Eagerly sought after by the repntatlou be bad at
tain®-!. Trot. King has visited In tarn tbe principal
cities of tbe United States, and daring his remarkable
career has made no leas than one hundred and fifty-
two voyages. Sometimes, like s taccesafa! euchre
player, be goes it alone, and at other times he is ac
companied by friend*, whoragerly participate in the
daring excitement that no cne enjoys with a greater
zeal thsa himself. Generally speaking, bis voyages
are extremely agreeable, but this la owing, we doubt
not. to tbe thorough practical knowledge he x>ossessee
of every minute detail connected with bis profession.
But there have been epochs in bis career, se he iu-
forms ns. when he was In Imminent deadly peril, and
were tfcofc incidents related by him in a public lec
ture they would cause the cheeks of many prseent to
pale with terror. If the life of this intrepid wrisl
navigator were published It could hardly fail to se-
subject almost completely unknown In the Held of
literature, and every °®e fond of daring scene a of ad
vent j re would be aure to purchase ti snd perus# it
with avidity.
In his personal appearance. Professor King ex
hibits none of that nervous activity one would sop-
po*o iuscpcrably connected with bis mode of life. He
is an unusually quiet man, with Intelligent features
and a ples«snt smile. Indicative of extreme good na
ture. His weight is, we should Judge, abort ons hun
dred and seventy pounds. He stands about five feet
ten, an 1 'in a conversationalist is rather agreesbi. ;
mdeod.it could n«*t be otherwise, when his past ex
perience Is token into consideration. His age is for
ty-two years, but no ons would take him to be more
than thirty-five. He has been married for several
▼ears, and bis family are now visiting the South for
the first time, we beUere, since the war.
On Monday, the Wtb Instant, most of onr readers
will have too oppjrtanlty of seeing Professor King
personally, lor few ws imagine, will stay away from
•o great an attraction aa a balloon ascension; We
earnestly hope that not a single incident, however
trivial, may occur to mar the festivities of the occa-
slon, and hope that tbe "Queen of the Air” and her
daring navigator. Professor King, may make a mo«t

Miss Sopble Worrell,
Say an* an, Oa., Dec. 16th. 1670.
Editor Morning Xewt:
We who appreciate the sprightly, vivacious Queen
of Barleaque, Miss Sophie Worrell, and her star cona_
blnatlon, would be more than pleased if we could*
persuade her to stay at least three days of next wsek
longer, when we would suggest some =sw sensation
burlesque, as "Lsrllne.” "Le Petite Faust," or some
thing novel to iu. Since every burlesque company
travelling South give only a repetition of what the
former company rendered two or three times, we are
positive ths'. if something new is presented, there
will not he even standing room in oar Theatre. This
we can vouch tor. When Mrs. Oates rendered "Ibe
Fair One With Golden Locke,” she drew crowded
booses for one week, playing the same piece six con
secutive nights, and had not her engagement ended,
she would have drawn the same crowd for stx more
consecutive nights. Mr. Editor, if you will be so
kind as to publish this, you will receive the hearty
thanks of Mast Youno l!r*.
[We are pleased to state that Mis* Worrell will re-
main all of next week, when she contcmplxtes pro
ducing several of her best pieces.]
