ottos—Under the pressure of our heavy re-

crop than «xpected, and » decided decline in

Middling uplands are there quoted at lOd.
Receipts piomise to be about 131,000 bales,
against 9i,fi0 j last year, and 246,000 for the cor
responding «eek of 1871.
Even in the face of the heavy receipts of ihe
past two weeks, we are Dy no means inclined to
advance our estimate given some time ago, of a
little over 3,4 )0.000 bal* s. One cr two weeks, even
thus far in the season, cannot be accepted aa a
criterion of the crop. We compiled cur figures
after a very careful study of all the circumstances
relating to the progress of the cr^p, and put them
out when recoipts were even heavier than they
are now, and, therefore, do not see any necessity
for changing them. We expect to have our
opinion confirmed in a short time by a rapid fall
ing off in receipt*; for just in the proportion tnat
they are at preent, and perhaps will be lor the
next week or so, heavy, exhaustion will the
sooner ensue.
The reoelpts of cotton during the week Lave
amounted to 21,025 bales of upland and 385 bales
sea island, against 11.504 bales upland and l!5G
bales sea Island, for the corresponding week last
year. The market closed quiet with a scarcity of
good grades at 19J, cents for middling, lbfc
cents for low middling, and 18®18J4 cents for
good ordinary. The corresponding week last year
closed active and firm, middling 20^c, low mid
dling 20©20J£c. and good ordinary 19>^c
Tbo at4>ck on hand at the clo^e of the market
yesterday was 75,089 bales upland and 2.182 b-.'es
sea laland.
The following resume of the market will indi
cate the tone for the week:
Jan. 10 —A good demand existed and full prices
were paid, notwithstanding the unfavorable ad
vices from foreigrf mnrkets. Good grades are
scarce. Sales about 1,650 bales. Middling 19‘ a c,

General Review. — Business generally has
been very good daring the past wtek. A v-ry
good demand has existed for provisions, dry
goods, tec., aDd prices, although not advanced,
have remained firm. Of rice, there is but lictle
on the market, and it has been much euquired
for. Operations in lumber and timber have
b*-ei» very brisk, as, indeed, they have been all
through the season. Arri vals of timber continue
to be veiy light, aud a.l lots are bought up im
mediate!} at extreme prices. The mills are all
very busy, aud have more orders than they can
fill.
