Circulars giving experience of Planters and
other information, will be fonnd on application
to Bryan A Hnnter.
Planters are invited to consider the following
proposition's made by the President of the above
Company, Mr. bangston, which has been accepted
by Mr. Owens, President of the Agricultural and
Mechanical Association of Georgia:
SAVANNAH, January 6, 1873.
Outavui Cohen, Esq. :
Deer Sir—I have, for aome time past, held the
opinion that the only true teat of the value of a
fertilizer is the result of its practical application
in the ground at the handa of caret ul and intelli
gent piantere, and that while chemistry is an ex
act science, and will determine, with unfailing
accuracy, the component parts of any fertilizer,
it affords no protection to the planter unless he
knows whether those component parts are derived
from bases that will assimilate in the ground to
the growing plant.
It has occurred to me that the meeting of your
Agricultural Society would afford a very favora
ble opportunity of having a practical test made
of the different fertilizers sold in this market. I

propose, thereiore, if the officers of the Society
are willing to undertake it, that such test shall be
made, believing that sfcch a test will be within
the scope of the objects for which the bocietv was
created. I propose—
1st. That a Committee on Fertilizers shall be
appointed by the Society, who will receive dona
tions of one ton or less from the different manu
facturers and agents who find a market for their
products in this State. That aaid committee shall
procure suitable practical agricultural trials to be
made with speh fertilizers.
2d. That each party entering into competition
in this trial, shall deposit wherpver the commit
tee may direct the sum of two hundred dollars,
or a less snm if that be deemed too much, to
await the result of the trial, aud tnat when said
result shall be determined one half cf the entire
amonnt shall be paid to the party whose fertilizer
produced the largest amonnt or value of cotton;
one-iourth to the second best, and one-fourth to
the Society, as some compensation for the labor
of making the experiment
This trial to be subject to the following condi
tions:
lbt. That the ground selected for the purpose
shall be of the meanest pogsiole kind of thin or
sandy land that will grow cotton at all.
2d. That the quantity of fertiliser used shall
not be less than two hundred or more than three
hundred pounds to the acre.
3d. That the fertilizers shall be drawn from the
stocks of agents, and shall have been manufac
tured prior to the date of this proposition.
4tn. That the Committee in their report shall
state th j date and number of pounds of each
picking, aud in determining superiority shall be
at liberty to consider quality of cotton and early
maturity as items constituting value.
5th, As a thing to be desired, but not constitut
ing one of these conditions, that the same lai d
shall be planted in cotton the following year with
out auy additional manure, with a view of de
termining how far the fert lizers maj have ex
hausted themselves the first year. Every intelli
gent planter will understand the value of this
experiment.
May I ask the favor of you, as one of the offi
cers of the Society, to present this paper for their
consideration.
Very respectfully,
Tour obedient servant,
LAWRENCE SANG9TON.
It has been extensively tested for many
years, and its unsurpassed good qualities are
now universally admitted. We have a great
