Last evening at seven o'clock—the usual
hour for distribution of the mails—the mes
senger of the News office repaired, as was
tit custom, to the Post Office to get the
evening mad, when ho was informed by the
genial clerk that he had received orders not
iq deliver the mails on Sunday night, and
he wm compelled to return empty handed.
With aM) desire to find fault with the Post
Office offish—although seriously inconve
nienced by 30t obtaining the mail as usual—
we would inq’liro why these thosenesses of
inch orders ? Pnder what ruling of the De

not to deliver the Sunday mail to the public
at the regular hours ? We pause for a reply.

On Saturday afternoon at four o’clock,
pursuant to the call of Dr. R. D. Arnold!
Chairman oi the Democratic Executive Com
mittee, a mass meeting of the citizens of
Savannah was held at St. Andrew’s Hall to
take action in regard to .the nominations for
Mayor and Aldermen at the election to
morrow. The meeting was called to order
by Dr. Arnold who made a few remarks ap
propriate to the occasion, and nominated
General A. R. Lawton as Chairman, which
was unanimously adopted. Major Charles
S. Hardee was elected Secretary.
General Lawton on taking the Chair made
a few remarks in reference to the import
ance of the contest, and counseled wisdom
and toleration in the selection of candi
dates—that every one could not be pleased
but that good men should be se’ected who
were most likely to represent the majority
of the citizens.
Colonel George S. Owens then moved that
a committee of thirteen be appointed by the
Chair to nominate candidates for the offices
of Mayor and Aldermen and present the
same for the consideration of the meeting.
Major John R. Hamlet offered an amend
ment—that each district be equally repre
sented upon the Committee.
Mr. John Cooper here moved that the
meeting adjourn untiks o’clock.
This gave rise to some discussion, Mr.
John O. Ferrill warmly supporting the mo
tion. The point of order being raised that
the motion was not debateable, it was pnt by
the chair and lost by the following vote":
Ayes, 59; nays, 98.
Mr. Wm. Swoll moved that the committee
be appointed irrespective- of districts.
CoL Owens.’ motion was then put and car
ried, and the Chair appointed the following
gentlemen as
the committee:
Wm. Hunter,
Alex. Irving,
W.‘A. Thomas,
J. W. Lathrop,
Ed. Flaherty,
i ^ M. Hogan, •
Wm. M. Gibbons.
The committee retired, and the meeting
soon wearying with the silence, began to
clamor for a speech. Several gentlemen
were called upon, but they did not appear
to be in a talkiftive humor.
The motion to adjourn until eignt o’clock
to receive the report of the convention wan
renewed and lost.
In a short time the committee returned,
and through their Chairman, reported tho
following ticket:
FOR MAYOR.
Hon. Edward C. Anderson.
for Aldermen.
Francis Blair.
Edward Lovell,
Mathias H. Meyer,
John McMahon,
George S. Owens,
B. D. Walker,
Thos. Llovd,
M-H. Meyer,
Waring Russell,
Julius Ko»x
Henry Brigham,
John L. Vilialouga,
Richard D. Arnold,
Thos. H. Harden,
John F. O’Byrno,
John Cunningham,
Isaac Brunner,
w , August P. Wetter.
Some discussion ensued on the announce
ment of the names, and an effort was made
to postpone action until eight o’clock in tho
evening, but failed.
The ticket was then ratified by a vote of
153 ayes to 5 noes, and greeted with three
cheers.
On motion tho meeting then adjourned.
“A Talk About I be City Finances.'
We extract the following from the leading
editorial in yesterday’s Advertiser under the
above caption:
To all reflecting men the perpetual yearly
ind a< ” "
drain of near three thousand dollars fruiii
the pockets of this community to b« sent
into other communities for their benefit is
au a.arming prospect. If the bonds were
held in Savannah, this objection would not
hold; but of the three milliou of bonds ami
over, four-fifths are held in New York, and
the effect through all times for this people
would be as if one should dip a pail into n
great wash-tub full of water, take it out full
and pour it immediately back; the level of
fhe water would remain the same, but if this
pa:l of water were emptied into his neighbor’s
wash-tub the level of water changes and
lowers steadily.
These diffuse thoughts are thrown out as
suggestive, and as food for the thinking of
our readers.
We would advise the readers of that re
liable journal, to season this “food” pre
pared for their “thinking,” with tho follow
ing spice: Of the whole amount of city bonds
issued ($3,300,000) over two millions ar.
held iS Southern cities, Hftvauuah, Augusta,
Charleston and Baltimore; and New York,
instead of holding four-fifths of the bonds,
as stated by this financial talker, barely has
oue-third. As “these diffuse thoughts are
thrown out as suggestive, and as food for
the thinking” bysthe writer, ho should have
taken pains to accjuire correct information
before making such an assertion.

Some time since we made mention that a
large number of the best ladies of r Colum-
bus had resolved to discard Northern finery
and were appearing oa tl*e streets and at
church in plaid and check dresses of tho
manufacture of their own city, aud casually
intimated that a similar disposition mani
fested by the ladies of other Southern cities
would be hailed with pleasure, and would be
^-Ngaided as the commencement of a new era
in tlid i»blc world. This has.been
copied and comm fated upon from one end
of tho country to the o&4Yj numerous
have been the plaudits of the press upon the
example of the Columbus ladies. “Brick
Pomeroy,” in the Jast issue of his paper, hts
this to say in reference to the subject:
“God bless the women of Columbus! Let
them now prevail upon others of their sex
in the South to do likewise. Let the women
of tho South refuse to wear other fabrics
than those made in their section of country,
aud the day will soon come when the South
will vie with N^w England in the wealth anil
wortn of her manufactories and then achieve
her lasting independence. With the beauti
ful women of that outraged land to encour
age industrial 1 , men are not patriotic who do
not give this subject attention and support.
There is no sense in paying & Northern rail
road capitalist to transport raw cotton had
wav across the continent to his mill-pay a
Northern capitalist to wake the cotton into
cloth in New England, then pay to have the
goods brought bacK to the St»ytn to be worn,
when they might as well be maae pear home
aud their profits saved to the country and
people where the raw staple is raised.
“A line of cotton mills in operation from
Baltimore to St. Louis, would injure the fa
natics and Monopolists of New England
more than all the soldiers the South could
ever raise—all the hues of forts and fortili-
caU'/US it could ever build. Again we say,
God bWtf tpe women of Columbus. I heir s

On Saturday night, about twelve o'clock, a
colored man named John Johnson, residing
on Indian street, was shot by some unknown
person and killed whilst sitting by the fil e
in his house. From what we could ascer
tain,it *pears that some one knocked at |jio
door about the hoy mentioned, and John
son inquired who it was. No reply was
given, amj the knocking was resumed. Tbe

but it is too short for songs like ‘‘You’ll lie-

The Contribution boxes.
In Saturday’s News mention was made of
the intention of tho ladies of the Memorial
Association to have placed to-day at certain
convenient points, contribution boxes for a
ten cent donation from each person in aid
of the Lee Monumental Fund. The idea, as
we predicted, seems to meet with much fa
vor, and doubtless a considerable sum will
be realized. No one in passing these boxes
will fail to pay tribute to the holy cause, as
it is a privilege which we, as Southrons, can
not too highly prize.
Boxes will be found at the Post Office, at
the corner of Bull and South Broad streets,
at the Persico fountain in Chippewa Square,
at the 8tore of Mr. F. Myers, on the corner
of Whitaker and South Broad streets, at the
corner of Bull and Hull streets, aud in the
afternoon in the Park near the fountain.
Thrown Out unci Injured.
On Saturday afternoon a horse attached
to a buggy in which were seated Mr. A. S.
Stone and A. N. Wilson, whilst passing a
crowd of draymen on Bay street, was acci
dentally struck by tho whip of one of the
draymen, who was cutting at his own horse,
and dashed off at a furious pace. Near
Abercorn street, the buggy collided with a
heavy cart, and was badly damaged. Tho
occupants wore thrown violently upon the
sidewalk. Mr. Stone was slightly bruised,
but Mr. Wilson striking upon his head was
knocked insensible. He was carried into
the store of Messrs. Champion & Freeman,
where he recovered from the shock in a
short tiiqo, aud departed with his friend.
We understand he is considerably bruised,
but is not seriously inj nred.
Seventh Annual liul Masque.
On the 13th February next, our Augusta
friends contemplate enjoying their Seventh
Annual Bal Masque. A customer from New
York has been engaged and will be in that
city in ample time with a large assortingot
of costumes. It is predicted tho affair will
be a brilliant and splendid success. The
Conititutionalist says: “It ie expected that a
large number of ladies and gentlemen from
the neighboring cities of Savannah, Atlanta,
Macon, Athens, Charleston and Columbia
will be present.^n deferent® to the wishes
of a number o^^itizens of Savannah, tho
committee decided to have the masquerade
on Thursday of *th« second, instead of
the first week of February, as a series of
races will take place in Savannah during the
latter.”
jQhnuton Eight lufuntry.
A few days sinoe, on authority of an officer
of the above organization, we stated that
the company would parade to-day whether
they received their uniforms or not. We re
gret now to learn that this decision has been
altered, in conformity with orders from Col.
Olmstead, that no company not uniformed
should appear in line. The disappointment is
not only felt by the organization, but by the
entire community. Their uniforms were or
dered over six weeks since, and according
to agreement should hare been here before
this* bnt tlie 7 bave not y et arrived - The
company b& ve their arms and are thoroughly
drilled, and it is to be regretted that they
will not be able to appear.
The Murder of the Negro Primus.
The gentleman who gave us the informa
tion concerning the murder of a colored
man named Primus one day last week, near
Station No. 3, on the Atlantic and Gulf Rail
road, is a respectable, responsible citizen,
who has frequent business transactions in
Savannah. He saw the body of the colored
man, and the marks of violence upon it, and
in the old darkey recognized one of his for
mer servants. Consequently, although our
able contemporary, tho Hinesville Gazette,
after diligent inquiry, “failed to ascertain
the least foundation for the horrible mur
der,” it is incorrect in its supposition that
the News was misinformed.
Winding Up.
During the past seysra) days the Carnival

not a candidate for election to the office of
an Alderman, and return my thanks to those
kind friends who have tendered me the com

Injured by a Fall.
On Friday afternoon, George Smith, a pu
pil in the Boys’ Intermediate School, comer
of Barnard aud Taylor street, Mr. H. perry,
principal, was iujured by falling from the
second story window of the building. He
was raising the sash at the time, and losing
his balance was precipitated to the floor of
tliej entrance, striking upon Jacob Lilien-
thal aud Thomas Fitzgerald, fellow pupils.
Fortunately no limbs were broken, the in
juries of all three being confined to sprains
aud bruises, not of a very serious Character.
The teachers tendered prompt attention to
the little sufferers, who it appears were con
siderably more frightened tban^liurt. The
escape of young Smith from very serious
injury was as miraculous as it was fortunate.

“Bridge” Smashed.
On Saturday night the husband of Jane
Griffin, colored, living on East Broad street,
whilst fondly embracing his loving sponsc in
tli'* way peculiar to the genial colored folks,
accidentally smashed the bridgo of her nose
with a tumbler, and terrified at the result,
he quickly vanquished. Dr. Geo. H. Stone
was called in and repaired the accident, an4
the bridge of that nose is almost as good as
a new one. Wc understand that Griffin is
very much grieved at learning that his wife’s
nose is composed of such fragile material.
Recorder's Court.
Only three cases occupied the attention of
the Court on Saturday.
A white man, fqr drunkenness, was sent
to jail for ten days.
A negro, for fast driving, paid three dol
lars and costs, and a warlike individual for
firing a gun in the sireet was likewise fined,
and the Court thereupon adjourned.

THE OREAT AMERICAN TEA COMPANY.
Saxtons River, Vt., Dec. 28,1372.
Editor America * Grocer:
Be kind e ungh to inform us through vour
valuable paper as to the reliability of “The
Great American Tea Company,” a specimen
of whose circular I enclose, which are being
scattered profusely in this vicinitv. Very
respectfully yours, H. C. J.
Answer.—So far as the general commer
cial standing of the Great American Tea
Company is concerned, we do not know any
thing against it. We presume it pays foriis
goods and is making money; but when it
comes to the statements of that Company,
as contained in the circular sent us by our
correspondent, of the great reductions in the
price of teas, of its great business connec
tions with all the principal ports of China
aud Japan, of its saving the consumer from
five to eight profits, of relying upon getting
only pure and fresh teas,, and all that sort of
talk, we would advise our friends to receive
them with a very large grain of salt. It buys
the most of its teas here in New York, just
as nearly all the jobbers and wholesale gro
cers do. It sells them as high, or higher.
If there are any specially bad lots of teas on
the market, it is almost sure to get hold of
them, and, from its long experience in ma
nipulating, can put the “high hills of Asia”
flavor into them, 30 as to deceive nine-tenths
of the consumers who patronize its club ar
rangement. We have no doubt that our cor
respondent is selling better teas than this
Company offers, and at as reasonable rates.
The above e copy from the American
Grocer, a well-known journal ot established
reliability.
We have constantly on hand a full assort
ment of pure teas, selected especially for
this market, which we offer at figures rang
ing from eighty cents upwards.
