YVednesday, July 22<L
On Sunday morning last, a spruce
looking darkey dropped in at Mr. Deho
ney’s stables on Broughton street, and
addressing the proprietor, stated that a
certain gentleman (mentioning his name),
book keeper in a~house on Bay street, had
sent him to hire a nice horse and buggy.
The darkey, who said he was employed at
the same place, produced the money
which had been given him, and npon the
representation made a nice turnout was
furnished him. Jumping in the vehicle,
he seized the reins and drove off, os
tensibly to the house of the gentleman
whom he alleged the buggy was for, but
as the sequel proves, the enterprising
Cushite, securing a companion, drove
out in the country somewhere. He ob
tained the buggy about nine.o’elock in
the morning, and shortly after eight in
the evening returned with the team.
Upon examination it was found that the
animal had been driven very hard and
that the buggy was badly damaged, and
in the opinion of a competent wheel
wright cannot be repaired for less than
twenty dollars*. The sportive Cushite was
closely questioned as to" the cause of thin
and finally confessed’that he had used the
buggy himself, though he contended it
was not broken. This, however, would
not go down with the proprietor, and
yesterday he appeared at the office of
Magistrate Elsinger and. took out a war
rant against the darkey, who proved to be
George Reilly, charging him cheating and
with swindling in obtaining a horse and
buggy under fraudulent representations.
Erejnow it is probable Georgejis meditating
upon the uncertainties of human calcu
lations and the prospect of an appearance
before the city court.

A noble warrior, who sports the blue,

How a Colored; Trooper Lost His Sword.
A valiant colored trooper, who holds a
“boss” position of second grade, in one
of the colored companies, is rather smit
ten with the charms of a saddle colored
damsel, who is the possessor of a stalwart
husband. The colored troop aforenamed,
however, hearing that the ferocious
Benedict would be absent on Saturday
mght, concluded to favor his charmer
with a visit. In order to make a stun
ning impression, he arrayed himself in
scrimptuous style and buckled on his
sword. Thus equipped he' pranced off
gleefully to the domicil and received a
cordial welcome from the female head of
the concern. A social game of cards was
proposed to while away the hours, and
the colored troop removed his sword and
placed it in a comer. Whilst this tete-
a-tete was progressing, a thundering
knock was heard at the door. The
ferocious husband had unexpectedly
returned, and that trooper knew full well
it would not be healthy for him if he re
mained, so he stood not upon the order
of going, but went at once. No mode of
escape offered save the window, and
through this the frightened warrior
bounded,"leaving his sword behind. He
was too glad at escaping to think of the
sword at the time, but yesterday morainf:
he considered over the matter, and suec
out a possessory warrant for the article,
aiid thus the parties were brought to
gether. Explanations followed, and after
considerable chin music, a settlement was
agreed upon mutually satisfactory, and
the weapon was returned.
Sold
made himself rather obnoxious to a high
toned colored damsel, Clara Morris, and
was jerked up by a policeman. Yester
day the valiant warrior was turned over
to Ids commanding officer.
Wm. Coulon, a valuable and useful citi
zen of the colored persuasion, was grabbed
by a policeman whilst mysteriously prowl
ing around a house near the comer of
Montgomery and Harris streets. Bill
didn't relish the idea of roosting in jail
liad consequently planked down the little
quid 1'ro quo.

Fixtures of the Freedman's Bank
Under Attachment.
Mention was mode in the Mobning
News several days since that several of
the depositors in the Freedman’s Bank
had sued out writs of attachment against
the concern here, in the hope of getting
some of their money, not having much
f aithYn that promise of ninety-three cents
in ‘.the dollar. Proper notice havidg been
given, yesterday morning Constable
Kaufman planted a little red flag on the
' ‘ramparts” of the institution, as a signal
that business was to commence. Quite a
number of colored people, with here and
there a few whitesj attracted by curiosity,
gathered at the building, and at eleven
o’clock officer Kaufman mounted the
rostrum and began to sing away lively,
inviting bids. At this juncture Mr. Isaac
Beckett, as attorney for the' Commis
sioners in Washington, announced that
parties purchasing did so at their own
risk. The genial auctioneer pro tem.
retorted by asserting that the sale was
perfectly legal, there was no danger of
“consequential damages,” as it were, and
that the attorney only meant his remarks
as pleasant “bunkum." Whether such
were the case or not, was not established,
but the sale proceeded. The safes, desks,
chairs and other office property were put
up one by one, and knocked down in the
usual manner to the highest bidder.
YVith one or two exceptions all the prop
erty was ^ bought in by I. YV. Brineker-
hoff, as agent for the trustees. The total
amount realized was $651 75, which,
after deduction of the legal expenses,
will be distributed among the attaching
depositors.

Thru Nice Little Colored Tea Party.
The police court was so crowded yes
terday morning that many of the curious
were compelled to content themselves
with kicking their toes on the outer steps.
The sensation of interest among them—
the majority of whom were of the colored
variety—was the examination of the little
tea party of colored gamblers who were
interrupted in their pleasant amusement
of “bucking the tiger,” by Lieut. Reilly
and a detachment of police, on Saturday
night, as mentioned in yesterday’s News.
The party consisted of tym. Wallenstein,
YVm. Ferrabee,>Paul Fenabee, Freeman
Hicks, Thomas Levy, Thomas Johnson,
Preston Jones and Thomas Farr, who
were drawn up in single file before the
Recorder, and presented an imposing ap
pearance. After a narration of the facts
of the arrest, the judicial magnate direct-
- cd that the parties be furnished with ac
commodations at the jail, until the merits
of their proceedings can be more fully
inquired into by the City Court. The
dusky squad wove thereupon escorted to
jail, and the ouricus spectators slowly
dispersed.

For some time past various articles be
longing to the Savannah, Skidaway and
Seaboard Railroad have mysteriously dis
appeared from the work shops of the
company, and, as usual, no one could
account for It Jt was certain that
large quantities Of brass, c$y couplings,
horse shoe nails, spikes, railroad iron,
etc., could not walk off alone, yet nobody
could tell how, when, or where they were
carried away.' "A shrewd investigation
into the affair, however, developed the
fact that . through communication had
been established between the blacksmith
shops of the company and some promi
nent junk houses, and that over this air
line, road, as it were, »o little freight of
this kind had been transported. The
company not fancying any such rival
concern, put an injunction upon further
shipment of spoils by causing the arrest
of-the blacksmith, who is believed to be
the chief engineer of the new route, and
some other parties. An examination will
charming little town of Quitman
there resides a nice young clerk, a little
green perhaps, but nevertheless, a very-
careful and cautious young man, who ap
preciates most highly the importance
of retaining receipts. He is not one of
those reckless young fellows who pays
the bills of his employer, and fails to
procure acknowledgement therefor.
When he settles an account, he is de
termined to have a voucher of some kind
for it, and this is the way we came to
know of his superior merits.
. A Savannah firm who have furnished
for some years past, supplies to .the
house, in which this eminent clerk is em
ployed, in the early part of the year,
shipped to the Quitman firm some stores.
These customers had always been exceed
ing prompt in paying, and some further
supplies sent, shortly after the ship
ments of those mentioned, were
paid for as usual on receipt,
and it was not until a few days since
that the senior the Savannah house
in revising his books, observed that there
was a small unpaid account of some
months standing against his Quitman
patrons. He thereupon wrote to them,
respectfully calling their attention to the
same, and yesterday received a reply en
closing a post office order for the amount,
dated 4th of March, 1874, with an expla
nation to the following effect: The firm
stated that they had instructed their
young man to remit the amount by money
order through the post office, at the time,
(the date of the enclosed showed this)
and he had informed them that he had so
done. On the receipt of the late letter
from Savannah, they interviewed the
young man on the. subject and told him
the money had never been received. He
insisted he had sent it through the post
office, in proof of which he could pro
duce the receipt, and thereupon, after
hauling over his papers, triumphantly
drew forth the post office money order,
which,regarding as a voucher,he hadjfiled
away among his receipts. The order was
as we have stated, enclosed in the letter
which reached the Savannah honse yes
terday, and was duly presented at the
office here and paid.
The young man, who had had it care
fully filed away for the past four months
as a receipt, may probably be induced
now to undertake to instruct a small class
of amateur clerks in business matters.
A Negro Seized With Convulsions Jumps
into the River and Is Browned.
Yesterday morning, about ten o’clock,
some excitement was created at the
market dock among the darkies who
doth daily congregate in that vicinity,
by the drowning of a negro man by
the name of Abram Buckshot. The
deceased was subject to epileptic fits,
produced by intemperance and exposure,
and whilst suffering from one of these
attacks yesterday jumped into the river
and was drowned before assistance' could
be rendered him. The body was shortly
afterwards recovered and at one o’clock
Coroner Knorr held an inquest. Although
it was established that the negro had
jumped overboard, and there was reason
to predicate .a belief of suicide, yet his
condition being considered, the juiy took
the view that he was unconscious of what
he was doing, and in consequence they
rendered a verdict of accidental drowning.
“Ain’t Yon no Who?”
A gentleman who had occassion yester
day to go out on the Ogeechee road about
seven miles from the city on business,
whilst returning, picked up on the road
side a tender missive written on a page
from a memorandum book, and which was
probably lost in transitu. The billet doux
is now in our possession, and its sweet
simplicity impels us to present it verbatim
et literatim for the delectation of our
readers. Here it is:

Smith, a colored boy, wiil be executed at
Easton, Md., on the 7th of August for
the crime of rape. It would naturally be
supposed that, the fate of this wretched
boy would be a warning to all other men,
and particularly to colored men, to which
they would likely to give heed, but we
learn from the Easton Star that Henry
Berson, a cousin to the condemned boy,
Ernest Smith, made a most determined
attempt to commit the same crime npon
a white woman last Monday. He was
chased from one hiding place to another
for two days, and was finally captured
nearRidgely, Caroline county, on Wed
nesday afternoon. These wretched rar-
cals must be punished with awful severi
ty, but it is a most painful fact that hang
ing does not seem to diminish the number
who lie in wait to outrage woman’s puri
ty.—Washington Star.
