year, and 63,827 bales less than in 1877.
_ During the month the official report of the
Agricultural Bureau at ‘Washington and the
reports of the various Southern Exchanges
as to acreage and condition of crop have
been published. The first named estimated
the acreage at about 2 per cent, more than
last year, and the condition 3 per cent, less
favorable; the latter an Increase of some
3% per cent, in acreage, with conflicting es
timate of condition. Private advices re
ceived np to this date report the condition
of the crop lesa favorable than when these
official reports were issued. Drouth and
cool weather having prevaOed~ln: some sec
tions, and in others the plant is reported
very email and, stands Indifferent.
The crop is generally regarded as two to
three weeks later than last year, and should
this prove true, stocks will be reduced to a
very low point before October, and higher
irices will rale. When the continuous
favorable seasons and the unusually early
maturity of the crop of last year are con
sidered, indications now warrant the belief
that this year's crop will fall short of that
pf last jeRf.
