CENTRAL RAILROAD WHARVES , At EatllPa To-pn;, til* Bull Street
| Savannah Morning News.
Improvements-Tlie Cordon Cottou 1 Mnffi* (No. 2 Morning News Library).
Preaa.
The activity observable at the Central
Railroad wharves is indicative of the in
creased business of the railroad and the
Ocean Steamship Company, and of the ex-
pecu ias ef future hea\*y demands for
fadiitAt. During a visit to tbe wharves
jc:lerday we noticed that work upon a new
freight 6hed, three hundred feet long, has
been commenced and is being vigorously
pushed, tbe purpose being to have
it completed at as early a day as possible.
This mammoth shed, which will be sub
stantial ly built, as the {.resent ones, covers
the spare between the cotton press
and the freight sheds now in use, and will
be devoted exclusively to the local freighL
The rapidly Increasing business has dt-
msnded this enlargement, the present com
modicus depot not being sufficient to ac
commodate the heavy outward and inward
freights. The new shed wiil be covered
with a tin roof.
We briefly mentioned a few days since
that portions of the two new presses for the
Gordon Cotton Press had been completed,
and would be placed in j>osltk>n at once.
This work Is now being done, and is oue of
considerable magnitude, but the progress
being mad ,* Is evidence that it will be com
pleted and be ready for operation when or
easion requires. Tbe addition of this “side’
doubles tnc working cap tcity of tbe Gordon
Press, and instead of seventy-five bales per
hour, it will be easy to compress one hun
dred and fifty bales per hour, or even more
If necessary.
The new presses are of the same size and
power as the two used during the past sea
son. All the work on them that could be
turned out from the workshops of the Central
Railroad has been excellently and skillfully
done, aud reflects credit upon the facilities
of the mechanical depailmeut and on the
experienced artisan*.
In a short time the work of putting in
order the recent purchase of the 8:eamshfp
Company, for the new elevator, will be
commenced, and will be prosecuted with
energy until completed. This elevator, it
is confidently anticipated, will be fiulsiied
before the opening of the business season
of 1830 81.
We also notice a neat little bridge is being
erected across Musgrove creek, just south
of the wharves, ami a foot-path of*ened up
through the adjoining land for the accom
modation of the colored employes and others
living beyond, aud who, since the closing
up of the bridge at Bryan street,
have beeu compelled to pass through the
Central Railroad property, following tbe
riverfront to the road beyond. It is pro
posed in time t.» make this foot path, which
will be a decided convenience to the travel
ing public, a good road.

Negro raptured.
About half-past eleven o’clock yesterday
morning a negro boy was observed by one
of the clerks In Messrs. Branch & Cooper’s
store, corner of Whitaker and Broughton
streets, prowling around the clothing store
of Mr. Simon Mitchell, in a very su.-pictous
manner. Presently the manteuvring rascal,
watching his chance, grabbed a vest
and was about disappearing, whon tbe
alarm was given aud he was seized by
two gentlemen, who were determined to
hold him until the arrival of a policeman.
The fellow struggled violently to release him
self.and even sought to draw bts knife to cat
one of them, lie w*»s prevented from this,
however, and Lieutenant Howard coming
up about this time, took charge of the thief,
wiio was dnrovereu to be bam. Sbelimau,
pretty well known in similar transactions,
and marched him off to the barracks, and
this morning he will be interviewed on the
subject, ana it is likely he will be furuUhed

open car, constructed by Messrs. Fetaer
Sanberg, especially for the Tybee Tramway

there would, we opine, be little grumbling
