as Treasurer of the society, was read and

w as offered by Mr. C. F. Prendergast and
unanimously adopted:
Whereas. Mr. Jeremiah Cronin has re
signed the office of Treasurer of the Hiber

for over Is months past; lie it
Tliat while regretfully accepting
the re-iguation, as a measure made indis
pensable bv his removal from Savannah, the
Hibernian 'Society cannot allow the occasion
to j.ass without gratefully acknowledging the
extraordinary fidelity, ability and courtesy
always shown bv Treasurer C ronin, to whose
intelligent amt judicious efforts (often made
at a great personal sacrifice to himself) the
Society's present prosperous condition is
largely due.
That the Secretary is hereby di
rected to forward a copy of these proceedings

Sent I’p for Fifteen Years—Judge Ad
ams Talks on Burglary.
John Gaston, colored, who broke into
the premises of Wm. B. Brown, on Bryan
street, between Barnard and Jefferson
streets, on the morning of the Sth inst.
and stole a gun, some bottles of liquor
and a watch, and cut open a valise be
longing to a guest who was stopping in
the house, was brought into the Superior
Court vesterdav for trial on an indictment
charging him w ith burglary. The de
fendant, however, through his counsel,
entered a plea of guilty and threw himself
upon the mercy of the court. Judge
Adams, in passing sentence, remarked
that the fact that the defendant had filed
the plea was a matter which possibly
might be considered in mitigating the
jieiialty prescribed by the law. but
that appeared to be the only claim which
the defendant bad upon the mercy of the
court. The crime of burglary he de
nounced as one of the most serious of
fenses. and hence a severe penalty was
prescribed by law. A burglar is not only
supposed to break or enter the house ot a
person and .to steal therefrom. If it were
known that his crime would lie confined
to theft, the law might not prescribe a
penalty as severe as it now does, but as
burglars take their life in their hands and
are likely to wound if not to kill those
who would presume to thwart them or
take them into custody. The offense is
one that deserves the penalty provided by
the statutes. Hence the court sentenced
the prisoner to be taken to the State Pen
itentiary and there be imprisoned at hard
labor for the term of fifteen years. The
prisoner seemed to be somewhat surprised
at his sentence and exhibited a forced
smile, though he showed that he was a
Isild and reckless youth, and apparently
indifferent of consequences.
Txxo Elegant Fans.
Among the show cases and shelves full
of handsome and elegant goods at Hous
ton's, No. 149 Broughton street, are two
beautiful point-applique lace fans, which
will be raffled during the present week.
The lists will open at 10 o’clock this
morning, and those who do not care to
invest in chances will be interested to
see the fans. The two differ in construc
tion. but l>oth have handles of mother of
pearl with the handsomest lace. Upon
one is a beautiful painting upon silk, and
in the other three figures are appliqued
in the lace. The value of the two is esti
mated at about S9O. While examining
the fans a glance through the other de
partments of the establishment will re
veal piles of elegant holiday goods—one
ot the departments being the novelty
counter, where the best perfumeries are
kept, with many other articles.
Arrested for Disorderly Conduct.
Officer Reid arrested a white man, ap
parently a sailor, about a quarter to nine
o’clock last evening, at the corner of Price
and Broughton streets, for disorderly con
duct and attempting to enter a house and
refusing to leave when ordered to. He
xvas under the influance of a considerable
quantity of the flowing bowl, and in a
measure not responsible for his views of
proper conduct.

City Court.
A telegram was received here yester
day by Philip M. Russell, Esq., Clerk of
the City Court, from Judge Harden, at
Atlanta, directing him to adjourn the
civil and criminal sides of the court un
til Thursday, the 20th inst., at 4 o'clock

improving the court room will continue
to be pushed to completion, by tbe hands
employed there under the supervision of
Mr. James M. McGinley, the contractor.
The platform, where the desks ol the Judge

be finished in a day or two, when other
proposed alterations will be commenced.
The work cannot be completed by the 20th
inst., as the painting will have to he done
after the carpenter work is finished, and
the debris and dust shall have been re

of the court will therefore be held in the
Superior Court room, if the latter men

The construction train of the F'lorida

this week.
The Madisonian says: “The Madison
and Athens Railroad has received anew
boom, and the probability of its early
completion grows stronger daily. We
predict the completion and equipment of
this road in two years.”
The Quitman Free Press printed the
following: “The Florida Midland and
Georgia Railroad surveying party have
completed the survey of the road trom
Valdosta to this point, arriving here on
Sunday last. They left here on Monday
to finish the survey to Deadmau’s Bay.
When this is done, they will return and
survey the route to Quitman. Valdosta
and Quitman will thus be placed in com
petition for the road, the route offer
ing the most inducements in way of
money and lands, being awarded the
preference. We learn that the citizens
of S’aklosta have subscribed $15,000 in
stock, besides some handsome land dona
tions along the route. Quitman has had
a meeting of her citizens, and manifested
considerable interest in the matter, but
we haven’t heard of any money or land
ofl’ers as yet. The two routes present
almost equal advantages. The line to
Quitman would run through a more fertile
and thickly settled country, besides being
about one mile shorter; whereas the
route to Valdosta would connect with the
.proposed Macon Air Line, and thus give
us direct communication with the North
and West.”

great credit on its manager, who leaves
nothing undone to enhance the comfort of

The interests of humanity seem to de
mand the publication of the following
facts: Two months ago my attention was
called to the case ot a poor woman who
was said to be afflicted with a cancer. I
fonnd her with an ulcer on her shoulder
at least five inches in circumference, an
grv, painful, and giving the patient no
rest day or night for six months. I obtain
ed a supply of Swift's Specific, which I
persuaded her to try. She has taken five
bottles, the result of which is that the
ulcer is entirely healed up, nothing re
maining but a small scab, not larger than
one's finger nail, and her general health
is better than for five years past. She
seems to be perfectly cured.
An old man of 67 years has been subject
to scrofulous sores five years. He had
one on his cheek as large as a silver dol
lar. swollen, raw, and constantly exuding
very offensive matter. Another on his
foot of the same character, and several
on the hands, all of about two and a half
years standing. His general health was
poor, and he could scarcely get about at
all. He has taken two bottles of Swift’s
Specific. The sores are all well, leaving
scarcely a vestige of their former exist
ence, and his general health better than
it has been in ten years. I consider its
effects wonderful—almost miraculous.
