THE PRIZE DRILIi.
The Advisability of its Postponement
Votll Another Year-The Matter to be
Considered by the Directors To-day.
The Directors of the Grand National
Prize Drill will meet this afternoon at 5
o’clock at the office of the President. Gen.
Henry R. Jackson, and. will consider,
among other matters pertaining to the en
terprise, the advisability of its postpone
ment from the coming spring until the
spring of ltfcSo.
A gentleman deeply interested in the
movement assured a Morning ” *”*
porter yesterdav that the success of the
drill was made certain when the organi
zation was effected. In view of the
Guards F'air, which will engross the in
terest of the military during the present
vear. it has been thought best by many
that it should be postponed until the year
following. This postponement would
give the military ample time for drill and
preparation for the contests. The 1 res:-
d.-nt stated yesterday that in view of these
facts the matter would be brought before
the Directors for their consideration.
There have been few movements in sup
port of which the citizens of Savannah
have placed more energy than the prize
drill. It commended itself. The move
ment was started early last summer, and
the required amount of stock was sub
scribed and a permanent organization
effected early in September. Nothing now
remains to be done except to fix the date
of the drill and carry into effect the plans
which will hereafter be arranged by the
organization. The matter will be acted
upon by the Directors to-day.
THE COLLISION.
Arrival of the Wrecked Locomotives—
Incidents of the Accident on the Cen
tral.
The wrecked locoaiotives. “Nebras
ka” and the “Andrew Low,” were re
ceived at the Central Railroad machine
shops yesterday morning. The “Nebras
ka” will be repaired at once, and will be
placed in service again as soon as possi
ble. It is not likely*, however, that any
effort will be made to repair the “Low,” as
she is an old engine, and pretty nearly
burned out.
The mail car on the passenger train in
curring the collision last week is a curi
ositv and worthv of a visit. The tender of
the “Nebraska” was telescoped into this
car in an almost incomprehensible way.
The whole tender was thrown into the
car. w here it now lies. The sides of the
car are scarcely displaced, and but for
tbe rough usage of the roof it might be
supposed that the tender was an article
of freight marked “fragile,” and tenderly
deposited inside the car.
A parallel wreck occurred some years
ago on the Central, w hen the tender of
the engine “.John W. Lewis” was so
neatly telescoped into a freight car that
a finger could not be introduced between
the tender and the car side. The engineer
upon that occasion. Mr. B. T. Cole, and
his fireman, Mr. M. J. Barnett, are still in
the employ of the company.
The Resignation of Judge Krskine.
It was rejiorted here yesterday by per
sons who, there is reason to believe, were
authoritatively informed, that Hon. John
Erskine, Judge of the United States Dis
trict Court for the Southern District of
Georgia, will to-day forward his resigna
tion of the Judgeship to the President,
and that it will Hike effect within two or
three weeks. Judge Erskine was ap
liomted front this State to the Judgeship
shortly after the war. and the records
show that he has been an able jurist. lie
was 70 years of age last September, and
when liis resignation shall have been
accepted he will be placed on the retired
list.
The resignation of Judge Erskine would
probably be tendered for immediate ac
ceptance by the President, but as the re
signation on such terms might embarrass
tbe court now sitting in term, its accept
ance will probably he deferred until the
close of the term.
The Savannah “Times” Publishing
Company.
A meeting of the subscribers to the
stock of the Savannah Times Publishing
Company was held at the office of the
Ihiihj Times. 91 Bryan street, last even
ing, a majority of the stock being repre
sented.
Mr. Lee Roy Myers was called to the
chair, and Mr. W.*B. Stillwell was chosen
Secretary. After discussion, the follow
ing Board of Directors was elected, viz:
D C. Bacon, \V. L. Guerard, J. J. Mc-
Donough. Fred M. Hull, J. J. Dale, John
L. Hammond, and B. H. Richardson.
At a subsequent meeting of the Board
of Directors B. 11. Richardson was elected
President and General Manager.
The charter of the company allows it to
increase its stock to the amount ot SIOO,-
000. It is understood that the stock will
ie increased, but not immediately, to the
limit (>ermitted by the charter.
To l>e Tri*d on Two Indictments.
Among the cases conditionally assigned
for trial in the Superior Court on Friday
next are those of the -State vs. Frederick
A. Garden, indicted for forgery and for
larceny alter trust. These cases were
assigned for trial on the 17th iust., but on
account of the absence of J. R. Saussy,
Esq., the defendant’s attorney, who is
attending the Supreme Court in Atlanta,
they were passed, to he heard on Friday it
the'defendant’s counsel shall have re
turned by that day.
Supplies for the Jail.
The County Commissioners yesterday
visited the jail for the purpose of ascer
taining w hat supplies would lie required
for the institution durinsr the coining
year, as tinder the new law the county
takes charge of the jail on the expiration
of the term of the present jailer, Mr.
Russell. The Commissioners will adver
tise for bids for furnishing the necessary

In an Open Boat at Sea.
Two young men named Arthur Cox and
James Hope borrowed a boat in Charles
ton last week and went out on a hunting
expedition. Cox returned to the city on
Wednesday night and left Hope to take
the boat to a neighboring wharf. On
Thursday morning, says the Xeics and
Courier, neither the boat nor Hope could
be found anywhere. Information had
been received, however, through one of
the pilots that a small boat similar to
Gardner’s boat was seen on Friday eight
miles off the Morris Island Lighthouse,
heading in the direction of Savannah.
The pilot hailed the man in the boat, but
received no reply. The whole proceeding
is mysterious, as Hope is said to have had
no provisions and no water on hoard, and
the boat was not able to stand anything
like rough weather. It is said by the sea
faring men that if Hope was out in an
open boat on Friday and Saturday night
outside the bar there is very little chance
of his having survived, as the sea was
very rough and the weather very cold.
