AS AMUSING CONTKETEMP-i.
A Stage Manager’s Bad Flight.
An old theatrical manager relates the
following a* an illustration of the amus
ing conlrelrmpt that frequently occur on
the stage: “I think It was Ada Gray who
was going to play in East Lynne in Rich
mond. On her arrival for rehearsal on
the morning of the performance the child
who was to play Willie was not forth
coming. The stage manager assureil the
star that he had a child who had often
played the part before and that it would
lx* ‘all right at night.’ But the child was
ill and couldn’t come. The manager put
his smallest ballet girl in the tod,but as she
couldn’t memorize the lines he got under
the bed with the prompt took. The slar
was staggered when she saw the length of
the child lying beneath the clothes, but
■be struggled bravely on. When the
prompter’s voice, disguised, but still harsh
and hoarse, came out star and audience
alike tittered; but the lady made an effort
and threw herself in simulated agony
ujxin the bed. The property man bad for
gotten to take off the castors, and away it
rolled, leaving the stage manager and his
prompt book fully revealed. That was
the end of East Lynne for that night.”
An Anecdote of Carlyle.
Edward King tells this characteristic
anecdote of Carlyle. That portentous
pseudo-philosopher, Mallock, called on
the old .Scotchman and let himself loose,
talking Carlyle almostiq death. Carlyle
listened imperturbably, invit'd him to tea
and had him to smoke in the library after
ward. When at last the youthful sage
thought it proper to take his leave, Carlyle
accompanied him to the door and said:
“Well, good-by. I’ve received ye kindly,
because I knew your mother; but I never
w ant to set eyes on ye again J”
