A SUMMER JAUNT.
The Pleasure* of a Trip to Florida by
Steamboat.
Editor Morning JSeujs: Few citizens of
Savannah have realized the rare and rest
ful recreation that may be enjoyed in a
trip between our city and Fernandina on
the inland route among the sea islands.
An hour or two at Tybee or Montgomery
gives one only a mere taste of the salt air,
serving for the moment to hush the strong
abdominal adjectives that describes the
city’s heat, but when you take the
steamer Bt. Nicholas, and, with novel in
hand, settle yourself for a day’s sail, there
comes with the change of scene and air
a sense of enjoyment that is simply
indescribable. To watch the keen in
telligence of the colored pilot as he
picks his way, whether it be in fog
or sunshine or among the shadows
of the night, through the tortuous courses
of the channels, uow brushing the very
marsh, in a moment afterward surging
across a bayou, following no beacon but
his own“experience, and again plunging
the nose of his steamboat against what to
ordinary eyes seems to be but a river
bank, and yet opens to his touch—all this
to the intelligent observer is novelty, ex
citement. Then, there is usually a rifle
on board, and as you glide along the dor
mant alligator invites a shot. Again
there are great flocks of cranes and sand
snipes, and so between the attractions of
sea and land and atmosphere every in
stant of the trip is made opulent with in
terest.
Of pleasant companionship there is
usually an abundance, and when the flow
of anecdote lags among_ the passengers, it
is always sure of a revival in the contri
butions of the genial Captain and Purser.
Now and then, as was the case during the
last trip, an excursion party is received
on board, and the boat becomes a gentle
pandemonium of fun. On Monday an old
time plantation holiday was celebrated,
and the passengers were treated to a se
ries of break-downs, jubas, walk-around,
and jubilee songs that the people of the
North would throng a theatre to witness
and go crazy about.
Of course there is nothing in Fernan
dina at this season of the year that is
specially interesting. It is the summer
abode of the Rip Van Winkles; but to trip
across the great ocean sound, inhale the
breezes of the sea, peep into the recesses
of the groves that halt hide the summer
mansions on the sea islands, this is the
pleasure that compensates the traveler
and makes him thank Dame Fortune for
directing him to spend a day or two dur
ing the summer solstice in her embrace
on the good ship St. Nicholas.
Traveler.
