Haaatt (f the Official Inspection by the
l oad* a* lirpartment.
A reporter of the Mo&SiXG >';weeal!ed
on - ije-rintendent Fleming, of the -aTan
mh. F.-orida and 'Veetern Railway, yee
terdsy. to asoertals whether any awards
had been made upon the insj*c
ti' n made by the officials of the
Plant Rtilwav srstezn last week. Ctpt.
K.-ming stated taat no awards would be
rr. . : u util tne expiration of a year from
the time tni* Inspection was made.
ouarterly inspections would
take place. There are about 62 section*
in the svstem. The condition of each was
f .rid t'> t/e generally better tbroogb
out tom was expected. The inspections
are something new in this portion of the
country, but the officials say should bare
oe. n institut'd 1/e fore, as they would have
had a good effect. Where there are so
rn%DT sections it is not probable toat every
supervisor or assistant supervisor will at
the end of toe year receive an award, but
there is no doubt that the effort to reaen
the highest general average will lead to a
decided improvement in the condition of
the line.
THE CADETB AT THE SEASHORE.
Going to Sullivan’s Island Next Week.
Toe savannah Cadets at a meeting last
night decided to make an excursion to
Sullivan’s Gland next week, leaving
Savannah on Wednesday night. Aug. 20,
arriving at New Brighton the next morn
ing, and returning on Thursday night. The
matter was fully discussed and complete
arrangements will be made in a day or two.
Tne company will carry from 36 to 30
men. rank arid file, and will give an exhi
bition drill on the beach on Thursday.
The trip has been anticipated for some
time, but no definite arrangement was
made as to date until last night.
The Cadets have many friends among
tbo Charleston military and their drill
will be an interesting sight to the Charles
tonians. The company has not been
drilling during the summer, but is al
ways equal to any occasion that may
present itself.
THE 1 KISH JASPER GREENS.
To Visit Brighton Beach on Sunday and
Monday.
At a meeting of the Irish Jasper
Greens, held last night, the company de
cided to make a visit to Sullivan's Island,
near Charleston, leaving Savannah Sun
day morning at 7 o’clock and returning on
Tuesday. As the object of the proposed
trip is to give the members an opportu
nity to enjoy a day or two of recreation
as civilians'they will not carry their guns
or accoutrements or military uniform.
Twenty-five active and a number of the
exempt members will participate in the
excursion. They will be accompanied by
several ladies and gentlemen as guests of
the company. The party will, probably,
number about forty-five, the company be
ing in command of Lieut. E. W. O’Connor.
STAKS-OGLETHOUFES.
Their Eighth Game at the Park this Af
ternoon.
The eighth game between the Stars and
Oglethorpes will be played at Base Ball
Park this afternoon. The home club will
play the same nine as on Monday, with
the exeeptionVif Brown in place bf Sulli
van in the field. The Stars will probably
put Johnson or Lawrrence in the box. The
bovs got on to Burkalow’s pitching on
Monday, so that it would be unsafe to
keep him in the position. With both nines
thus strengthened there is every prospect
of a close game. Cars will run direct to
the park ior the commencement of the
game and will be at the park entrance at
its conclusion.
Alum is used in many baking powders
as a cheap substitute for Fruit Acid. All
such powders are dangerous, for it re
quires no considerable amount of alum to
disorder digestion and ruin health. Am
monia is sometimes used to enliven the
powder. To escape ail of these objection
able drugs, use only Dr. Price’s Cream
Baking Powder.

A New Department and What it Aim*
to Accomplish.
The Woman's Christian Temperance
Union has added anew department to its
field of Christian labor, known as the
•‘Department of Evangelistic Work.”
Mrs. Richard Webb, President of the
Savannah Branch of the society, has re
ceived advices of Us purposes and
methods.
This society, with its 3?S auxiliary State
and nine Territorial unions, including
the District of Columbia, is the larges'
society ever composed exclusively of
women and conducted entirely by them.
It is the lineal descendant of the great
Woman’s Crusade of l'C3-4, and is an un
sectarian union of Christian women for
the purpose of educating the young,
“forming a better public sentiment, re
forming the drinking classes, transform
ing by the power of Divine grace those
who are enslaved by alcohol, and remov
ing the dram shops trom the streets by
law.”
Tee Evangelistic department aims “to
increase the interest of our unions in
Bible study, especially with reference to
the exposition of temperance principles,
by regularly furnishing them with lesson
leaflets for use in local meetings, of which
thousands are held each week; and car
ries the ‘Gospel Cure 5 to the drinking
classes by holding evangelistic services
in reading rooms, railroad depots, tii-:a
tres, etc., enlisting the people to build
temperance tabernacles for the masses,
and nolding gospel temperance institutes
for the training of women in methods ot
conducting evangelistic services.”

In Bagi and Patches.
Nothing so vividly tells of a shattered
life or the griping* of poverty as the tat
tered and patched raiment of a man. It
excites in our breasts a touch of surprise
that such things can be possible under
reasonable conditions, particularly when
we know how small a sum of money will
buy enough clothing to cover nature and
regard decency.
I still continue to sell my fine tailor
made clothing at absurdly low prices.
Clothing must go, and I will not stand on
a question, as room for fall stock is com
pulsory.
I am now offering such real bargains
that it would tie a genuine investment to
buy and boid the goods over until they are
again seasonable—bearing in mind, of
course, that there are still left nearly
three months of weather that will not find
summer gooas inappropriate. Every state
ment I make will be substantiated on ap
plication. I have a reputation to sustain,
and haven’t the slightest idea of having it
questioned.
An inspection of my special lines of
Gents’ Shirts and Furnishing Goods. I
am offering great inducements in tnese,
and you will find your pocket heavier by
trying the sign of the Golden Arm, 159

The Harnett House, Savannah.
The wonder of those who go to the Har
nett House, in Savannah, is that so excel
lent a table and such comfortable rooms
can be offered to the public at such mini
mum rates. Without exaggeration, the
table of the Harnett is as good as that of
the Screven House, and the rates just one
half as large. Courteous treatment makes
up the sum of its attractions. The public
largely testified their appreciation.—
