Mr. MacDonetrs address was upon the
deal of w< manhood, and was a scholarly
and eloquent effort. The extent of the
subject rendered it impracticable to treat
,t futlv. but in the half hour which Mr.
Mac Do neli spoke he covered a
vast field and brought seriously
-r: re his hearers a knowledge of the
_-reat and rapidly enlarging field of
v man’s usefuin-ss. The true beauty of
w man he did not regard as physical
jeauty.but rather the tenderness and elo
quenee of her soul and mind.
He cited examples in both
sacted and profane history of the
• ari .uslr acknowledged types of beauty.
ut found no true ideal except in toe
w* man wLose grace lay in the soul. The
held of missionary labor he pointed out
as one of the* greatest fields of
woman’s usefulness, where her

Through freights are now received for

and from there over land. A line of hacks
has been established between the two last
named places. By this route freight leav

fixing a rate on cotton from Florida

growing out of the cut in rates by the

Be- ■ f .i: The fl -
cotton was shipped on the Wrightsvilie
md Tennille Railroad by E. S. Peacock,
Esq., on Saturday last. Oct. 25. This be
gins to looks like business. The road is
not yet completed, but Supt. Thomas is
making very satisfactory progress. The
protracted drought has caused great
difficulty in getting crossties sawed on
the line" of the road, and Capt. Thomas
ias been com felled to try to procure
them at points along the line ot tae Cen

The Joxrhim street Bridge.
To ttu Honorable the Jt'iyor and Alder
men cf the cify of Saeannah:
Gentlemen —In the original sale of
the Stiles lands, west of the city, to Giles
ind Bradley, will be found the reserva
tion of the right of way for the roadway
tnd bridge across the canal and the Stiles
lands to the lands beyond. The Central
Railroad Company purchased from
Bradley with the conditions attached.
Bradley could not convey a
right to close the roadway
or remove the bridge. A committee of the
Board of Road Commissioners, composed
of Capt. J. W. McAlpin, Mr. Sweat and
myself, were appointed to confer with the
county and municipal authorities and the
railroad company for the reopening of
?his public roadway; and after much diffi
cult!" we succeeded in satisfying these
several powers as to the public right
to this roadway. '.Ve also learned
that when the bridge got out of order Al
derman Hamlet had ordered its destruc
tion instead of repairing it. but we could
not find any resolution of any official
Jy under which the Alderman thus de
stroyed a public convenience, and put his
foot on a public right. The assurance
was given us that the bridge
would be rebuilt br the city,
F.ut it has never been rebuilt.
Even the Canal Company was forced to
confess our right to it. but by some pro
cess of pigeon-holing the report, between
the two 'stools—Alderman and cinal
official—the bridge remains a promise in
stead of a reality. Somebody is very
greatly to blame for thus conniving at the
-uppression of this necessary convenience.
The oflender can explain for himself.
Respeetfullv yours.

deceived by the outward appearance of a saoe. Many times they buy something
which is partly composed of pasteboard, or the soles and heels filled with shoddy.
The first time they get wet they tall to pieces. Tnis is the worst purchase you can
