ket was swept pretty bare. The remaining

The. new week opened st the Stock Ex
change with a decidedly strong market. Over
one-half of the trading, hoxvo-er, was con
fined to St. Paul, Lackawanna, Western
Union and Northwestern, in the order men
tioned. The first prices were about the lowest
of the day, and the closing sales were made at
or very near the highest quotations reached,
the advance being steady and without any
important reaction, and ranging from * 4 to %
per cent, except for St. Paul and Chicago,
Burlington and Quincy, each of which were
1%, ana Rock Island, which was 1% per cent,
higher. There was very decided strength also
in Northwestern, which is up % t „.r cent.
Western Union is up % per cent., and is now
within a little over 1 per cent, of the highest
price at which it lias sold during the current
year. The street was nmi-ually free of news
