KICK KUINKD ON THE BATILLA.
Disuitrouii Lohmi Ueported by Planter*
in Cooaeciuencci of tlio Deluge.
Owhxs’ Kkkhy, Ga., Oct. o.—Hail 1
waited a few days later 1 would have'*nt
quite a different report from the SatlUa.
The storm o! Sep . 20, 27 28 and did
fearful havoc w ith tbe planters generally,
and to-day $50,000 will not cover the total
loss of tbe rice crop on the river. •!. S.
Bailey loses half his crop. All rice not
hauled out of the fields is a total loss to
the upper planters. The river is verv full,
and the backwater to some plantations
has been bursting ovr. Everything in
the fields is still under water. Col. U. 8.
Uwen‘ ‘ lvaniioe" plantation has about
400 acres that I consider not we: lit band
line, for tbe exp*-use of so doing will about
eat up the income. IBs less is about ‘
lti.OOo bushels of rice. .1. I'. King will
also lose about 175 acres, or about s ,OOO I
bushels. He may recover a part ol 50 i
acres, not so badly damaged, if the river j
does not overflow i;s banka again .Mr. j
(Bigger, at the ' 01. film ti plantation, re- |
ports his damages very heavy, at Hope- j
w ii more so than at Refuge, as be had a
portion of the crop on that plantation
battled in. and had shipped one cargo. |
>1 r. Bodell, at the Woodbine plantation. '
has about 70 acres floating about his
fields, and be considers it a
total loss. Besides those men
tioned, there is a good deal of land
planted by the freedtnen on the rental
sy stem, and but very few, from what I can
learn, had secured their crops. And iu
proportion their losses will be verv heavy.
And some rice not yet cut is almost a
total loss, for it is still in water, and can’t
be haudled. Also the dune rice on the
river has been injured to some extent.
Col. Owens has about 140 acres. Mr. King
about N5, Col. Clinch over 100, Mr. Bodell,
1 think, about 80, m>t vet cut. This sea
son bus not been as favorable for the.lune
crop ns some sea-ons. It is one crop
that depends entirely on the fall months
for a good yield, fur entire county has
been under one fearful deluge ot water,
aud on last Monday night there was a
six hours' ruin that surpassed anything
I have ever experienced belore. All
traveling is blocked up, bridges washed
away, mail connection closed up, anti our
public roads left in perlect gullies. Hope
you have not suffered so heavily around
the Forest City and the planters of the
Ugeeebee as we have further south.

A Stir In the Southern Now York Bap
tist Association.
Frnm tht .Vine Fur* Timet.
The Rev. Robert S. Mae Arthur, ot Cal_
vary Church, threw a bombshell Into yes.
terday’s afternoon session of the Southern
New York Baptist Association, by de
nouncing a prominent member of the Rev.
T. DoWitt Talmage’s church as an ex-con
vict from Sing Sing, and a man for whose
arrest a warrant had lately been issutd,
.Mr. MacArtbur was speaking in reply t->
the Rev. Richard Hartley, of the I.sight
street church, who, in the course of an
address on city mission work, referred to
the hard field and hard characters met
in the churches of the lower part of the
City -Mr. Mac Arthur wanted his audi
ence to understand tnat the frau lub-ui
portion of society had representativ e :u
the upt iwn churches and in the fashiona
ble neighborhood.
“1 had a man,” continued the speaker,
“in my old church in Twenty-third street,
and he experienced religion. 1 prays 1
and helped him. and finally 1 put him in
sing sing. \ loud cry of •Amen
Then”- and Mr. Moo Arthur grew e.vetted
—“this man, after his release, went over
to Brooklyn and became a power In Mr.
Talmage’s congregation. About a year
ago be ‘got’ more religion at a
glorious revival: but, brethren, he played
tuat on me once before, and 1 have no
faitn In him. Me is one of tile pil’arsof the
Tab*made to-day, and when th* w ife of
the pastor went to Europe he undertook
the teaching o: her b: le class. Now, 1
am goiug to expose this man, and It there
are any reporters in this room 1 hope they
will take his name and make It public
property. There is now a warrant out !
Sor his arrest and 1 hope the officers will
serve it on him. The man I refer to is
Frederick Dodge, and he will find be has
played his dodges on the public long
enougn.” This address naturally created
much gossip, but the few who knew of
Mr. Dodge were not inclined to discuss i
the mallei.
Mr. Mac Arthur said last evening that
Dodge came to this city about five years ago
with letters from prominent Boston gen
tlemen. He was then about 25 years old,
with good looks and a rather preposess
ing manner, and soon won his way into
the minister’s confidence. He represented
that he was a reformed rumseller, and be
came deeply interested in the work of the
church. He frequently expressed a de
sire of obtaining a college education, and
more than once hinted to some of the
wealthy members of the church that a lit
tle pecuniary assistance from them would
not he despised. No money was forth
coming, however, bo Mr. Dodge in some
other manner obtained admission to Mad
ison College, Hamilton, N. Y. It was
while at this institution, said Mr. Mao-
Arthur, that his true character became
known. He was detected in stealing
books from the library, and, in three in
stances, of uttering forged checks on a
Boston firm. Tt*c latter irregularity whs
hushed up, hut for the theft of the books
Dodge was tried, found guiltv, and sen
tenced to serve a term of years at Sing
Sing.
Upon his release he went to Brooklyn,
and about a year ago interested several ot
the trustees of the Brooklyn Tabernacle
in his behalf, and on ooufession ot taith
joined the church. To the elders who
questioned him at that time he told the
old story of being a reformed rumseller,
adding that he had also been a heavy
drinker. These transgressions were
overlooked, and even induced sev
eral of the older members to
take a more active interest in
him. He became connected witb the Sun
day school, teaching a class of young
girls. Three weeks ago he led an open
air prayer meeting on Fulton street, and
recited his experience as a reformed
drunkard. In tbe crowd who listened to
him was a Mr. Cleveland, of Hamilton,
who knew* ot the man’s life at that place.
This gentleman denounced Dodge
to t.he managers of the prayer meeting,
and the young man disappeared.
William Staon.of No. <>32 Pacific street,
and John Wood, ot No. 314 Lawrence
street, Brooklyn, both of whom are trus
tees of the tabernacle, said last evening
that Dodge had not been to the church
s.nct Sept. 1, and numerous inquiries had
lately been made for him. Ho had no
home in Brooklyn, and was there only at
irregular intervals. Both gentlemen
knew that the missing man had confessed
upon joining the church that he had been
guilty of some wrong in the past, but it
w as not serious enough to keep him out.
Mr. MacArthur says that the warrant
which has lately been issued for Dodge
charges him with committing a criminal
assault on a youug lady residing in
Brooklyn. He did not, however, know
the lady’s unme or the name ot the person
making the complaint.
