Cotton—The market was quiet but very
firm. There was a fair inquiry, but the ma
jority of the largest holders were refusing to
sell at present ligures, and were generally
averse to showing samples, so that the offer
ing stock was quite small. The business,
however, that transpired during the day was
at full prices on scant grades. The total sales
for the day were 548 bales. On ’Change
at the opening oall, 10 a. m., the market
was reported steady and unchanged, with
sales of 185 bales. At the second call, 1 p.
m., it was steady, the sales being 287 hales.
At the third and closing call, 4 p. m., it wa
Arm and unchanged, with farther sales of I.S

Naval stores.—The market for spirits
turpentine was quieter, but it remains quite
firm at the advance. There was very little
offering. The sales for the day were 2i 0
caskß, 100 of which were at 49%e for regulars,
and the balance on private terms. At the
Board of Trade on the opening call the mar.
kef was reported strong, at 49%c paid and bid
for regulars. At the closing call it was
steady, at 431*0 for regulars. Rosin—The
market was quiet, but steady and unchanged.
The sales were about 800 barrels. At the
R ard of Trade on the first call the market
was reported steady, at the following quo

lbe only lealure in to-day's Stock market
of special interest was trading in Reading.
The slock shows a net advance of 1% per
cent., with sales of 95,800 shares, out of a total
business of only 280.000 shares. Reading cer
tificates. id the name of W. K. Vanderbilt
and aitested by his brokers, were delivered
on the street to-day. The remainder of the
u-ually aciite list shows a slight gain, except
St. Paul. Erie common aud Union Pacific,
which are a shade lower. The market showed
a generally firm opening, and after yielding
a traction again, became firm, reaching the
highest figures a Utile after midday. There
was considerable weakness developed after 1
o’clock, but in the last hour the market was
firm, and closed steady to firm at the follow
ing quotations:

Chicago. March 6.—There was good buying
of wheat in a quiet way throughout tho entire
session to-day, and, while there was no spe
cial aotivity or excitement, considerable prop
erty was absorbed; the feeling was stronger
inconsequence; foreign advices quoted firm
markets. New York was higher, and export

reaching sea it was found that sfic was leak
ing so badly that the Captain ihcidcd to re
turn to this port for repairs. She arrived last
night, and to-day a eurvoy was held, and the
schooner will discharge cargo and be re
paired.
