reviews puts it to-night, “affairs on ’Change
appear to lie fast degenerating Into conditions
when a market review for one dav will answer
very well for the next., with poßibty some few
changes in fractions.” The wheat market
closed in the latest trading at practically yes
terday’s figures, and the orice for May deliv
ery remains at virtually the same figure at
which il was quoted six weeks ago, having
varied in that lime less than fig iu either di
rection; trading was almost entirely local to
day. and speculation was phenomenally light;
cables came in a little stronger, under which
impulse May advanced to 85%e, fell off to

again easy, May closing at 84 7 ac. Very little
interest was developed id either corn or oats,

AIMS OF POPE L.EO XIII.
His Desire te Bring the Peoples or the
East Into Unity With the Pontiff.
From the Baltimore Sun.
Archbishop Elder, of Cinciuuati,
preached nt the cathedral Sunday to a
large congregation. Archbishop Gibbons
was present. Archbishop Elder read a
circular letter from Archbishop Gibbons,
which the clergy were directed to read in
all the churches of the archdiocese two
Sundays, urging that a general collection
be taken up in aid of the plan of the Pope
to draw into fbe told of the church
the eastern peoples, who have long
been out of its pale. The let
ter begins by referring to a private au
dience of Archbishop Gibbon* with the
Pope during a visit to Romo in 1883, in
which l.eo XIII. expressed an earnest de
sire to signallsto his pontificate by drawing
into unity with the Catholic Church tho
schismatic peoples of the East. To that
end he ardently wished the aid ol the
Catholics of the United States. At the
suggestion oi Archbishop Gibbons the
Pope expressed the same views ala
general audience which he gave for that
purpose to the prelates tbeu in Rome
from this country. His ardent desire was
to break down the wall of nations,
makiag all one in Christ, and knowing no
north, no south, no east, no west.
Among tho chief means which it is pro
posed to adopt in carrying out tho plan of
the head of tho church is the establish
ment of a college at Constantinople and
another in Athens (or the Instruction of
youth and to extend the knowledge of
Christian doctrine as held and taught, by
the Catholic Church from the centre of
unity, the chair of Peter. The American
prelates heartily concurred In the plans
of the Pope, anil promised for the Catho
lics of their dioceses generous co-opera
tion in carrying out the purpose.. So, at
the third Plenary council, it was resolved
to take up a general collection within
eighteen mouths of that time.
After some remarks on the subject.
Archbishop Elder said that this desire to
extend the faith was a practical illustra
tion of thutcharity which loves our neigh
bor for the love of God. He added:
“Coming aa 1 have so recently from the
presence oi your Lord's vicar in Christ, 1
can say with confidence and personal
knowledge that he is actuated bv a deep
seated regard, not only for the church in
America, hut tor our peoule and
our country. He spoke with great
satisfaction of the great council
of Baltimore and its work. He
expressed his particular affection for
your estimable Archbishop, whose char
acter gives increased renown to your me
tropolitan city. Our chief Bishop
charged me especially to convey to him
bis messages ol esteem and regurd. But
here let me say that you have a large
share in this regard. His personal merits
have been developed as Archbishop of
Baltimore. The bishop may plan and the
clergy may work, but the enterprise ot
the church cannot be accomplished with
out the generosity and co-operation ot the
laity.
