“ Mart” Falls from Gree.
Tcnsth ic Tori: H.r il t.
Lancaster, Pa., March 23.—1 t seems
likely tuat the Welsh Mountains will
again be the scene of some old time de
predations by one of the famous Buzzard
brothers. For some years Mart Buzzard,
one of the brothers of Abe and Ike Buz
zard, the notorious outlaas, now iu the
Eastern Penitentiary, assumed the role of
a reiortned thief, became a detective and
aided the officers in breaking up the gaDg
ot thieves who made tbe We sh Mountains
their headquarters. Ihe (aimers in that
section of the county believed that Mart's
reformation was trior rngb, and be was
aided hv them in a substantial way. Mart
last fall fell from grace.
He was suspected of being a party to
some of the numerous th- ft* committed
in toe vicinity of the mountain*, but
nothing definite could ba laid to bis
charge until about ten dars ag". when he
stole a hog. A warrant was placed in the
bands of Constable Lowery, ol Karl town
ship. to execute, and he went in sea ch ot
the Buzzard. Mart beard that tbe con
stable was after him anil keut out of bis
way. Martisalss strongly suspected of
having stolen a horse.

money raised lor the benefit of the resi

in needy circumstances. The order was
signed Mr*. Abe Buzzard. A large sum
of money was given to him, and it was
afterward learned that the woman’s name
had been forged. Constable Lowery was
in the city to-day looking for Mart, and
believes that he has been secreted by
some of his friends until he can get money
enough to go away.
DRYING THE OREGON’S MAIL.
How the Sosk'il Letters are Taken Care
of at the Post Office.
From the Xew York SbTt .
The room in the federal building to
which misdirected letter* are sent was
atrewn yestarday with mail matter saved
from the Oregon. All the mail recei ed
is first sorted in the post office proper,
and all upon which the address is plain
is forwarded to its destination. That up
on which the addresses are blurred is
sent to Superintendent Jones’ depart
ment, and nis experts do ail they can to
decipher toe addresses. All sorts ot
tilings have been received from the
Oregon wreck.
A letter which had been evidently
written in red ink contained a hunch of
shamrock. The writing was almost en
tirely obliterated, the salt wa.er having
formed a combination witn the iuk which
spread it over the paper, giving it a lamt
tinge of red. The word “Cork” at the
beginning of the letter was the only word
mat could he deciphered.
Superintendent Jones ha* received
three postal cards and two verbal appli
cations for Ins bunch of shamrocks. A
great many violations of the law come to
light in a wreck like the Oregon. Super
intendent Jones has a box ol tine cigars,
which were packed very carelully.
Each one was wrapped In a heavy piece
of cloth aud fitted in a box divided Into
separate compartments. The cigars
were thorougly soaked with salt water
and the address was nearly destroyed;
but It was made out as. “August Voight,
Ellenwood, Kan.” Cigars an* dutiable,
and. of course, cannot be sent through
ttie malls. They will be forwarded to
Washington lor destruction.
There were several photographs on*
which the addresses were Dually de
stroyed. One was of a whole laruily. An
other was the picture of a beautiful
young Indy for which, in alt probability,
some Western swain is longingly looking.
There were pieces of cloth, a package of
tooth brushes, and variegated samples of
worsted, all of which has been thoroughly
soaked.
There was received in the department
yesterday also, hut not from the Oregon
mail, a box of cakes, pies, etc. The
package gave out a very strong odor.
Among other things was a good supply
ol limburger cheese. The box was paste
board. It is unlawful to send cake ami
such articles of food except in a wooden
or tin box. Bnt in addition to this the
box contained a letter which would make
it first-class mail matter, calling lor 57
cents postage. So there were two reasons
why it dul not go to Chicago, for which
point it was intended.
An imnienao pile of Imoks advertising a
patent medicine made In London, and
winch were addressed to people in this
country, is among the Oregon wnste.
Very few ol the addresses are intelligible.

Lyons, N. Y., March 22.—Joseph M.

event in nis long life, and delighted in re
calling incidents of the past century. He
was with bis tamer in Pennsylvania, and
'bere saw George Washington, who was
then auout to depart fur Mount Vernon,
having left the Presidency.
Mr. Demmon lenu-mbered tba fact of
h>B seeing Washington, but bad no recol
lection of bis appearance. He remember
ed distinctly having seen Jam s Madison
and Thomas Jefferson when tnev were
Presidents. He took particular pride in
nis political record. From 1812 wnen he
voted lor James Madi-on for President,
until last fall he never missed voting at a
Presidential or Gubernatorial election iti
his State. Only twice In all that time did
be (ail to vote at any other election. He
wus a Democrat, and probably tbe oldest
elective officeholder in America, being
treasurer ot Lyons village at the time of
bis death.
