LIVER; LUNG AND BLOOD DISEASES:
Their True Nature and Common Sense Treatment.
LIVER DISEASES.
The writer dsa'res to preface the considera
tion of the diaoaaes mentioned at the head of
this article by saying that the truthfulness of
the theories which he is about to advance has
been confirmed by a vast experience embrac
ing the successful treatment of thousands of
cases, and he therefore promulgates his views
without fear of their being successfully con
troverted. He holds that to a congested,
torpid and diseased liver can be traced many
diseases of diverse symptoms, and affecting
various organs. Many of these diseases are
usually treated as if primary affections, both
physician and patient being doomed to disap
pointment by an utter lack of favorable re
sults; for to treat a disease successfully we
must have a clear conception of its true
nature.
The ‘•Housekeeper” of Health.
The liver is the largest gland iu the human
System. It is the great purifying organ of the
system, and has very appropriately been
termed the “housekeeper” of 0"t health. The
importance if the liver as a bland-purifying
and excretory organ cannot beovercslimated.
The foul and morbid matter absorbed from
the various tissues, and taken into the blood.
Is received therefrom by a healthy liver and
converted into bile. When the liver becomes
torpid or congested, it fails to eliminate ibis
vast amount of noxious substance, which,
therefore, remains to poison the blood and be
conveyed toevery part of the system. Nature
tries to work off this poison through other
channels and organs—the lungs, skin, etc.—
but these organs become overtaxed in per
forming this labor, in addition to their nat
ural functions, and cannot long withstand the
pressure, but become variously diseased.
Heart Disease.
The blood, surcharged with daily accumu
/ated poison, as the result of torpor of the
liver, unduly stimulates the nerves of the
heart, ar.d produces chronic irritation, palpi
tation, or excitement of that organ, develop
tig forms of heart disease.
Dyspepsia and Costiveness.
The stomach and howeis cannot escape be
coming affected, as a dire-1 result of liver dis
ease, and cosi ivenoss, hemorrhoids, dropsy,
dyspepsia, or diarrh<ea,and many other forms
of chronic disease, are among the natural re
sults.

Stimulated by the unhealthy blood; hence

headache, sleepy or nervous feelings, gloomy
forebodings, and irritability of temper.
Si '.a Disease-.
The blood-poison, not being worked off by
<be liver, when that organ is diseased or slug
gish. aecumulat -s. aid filtering through the
skin becomes so acrid as to produce blotches,
pimples, eruption . pustulea. scaly Incrusta
tions. lumps, inflamed patches, acne. Impe

becoming still inure virulent,, lhe poison

Scrofulous Diseases.
A lone series of diseases, commonly known
as scrofulous, is cau-ed by toroorof the liver
—the want of proper excretion of the poison
ous. fes (Tine matter circulating in the blood.
These cause swellings about the neck, en
latged tons Is, scrofulous sore eyes, running
ulcers, discharges from the ears, catarrh or
o/d’ ia, l'evor sores, white swellings, hip-joint
dis ase. ulceration of buncs, internal swell
ings, ulceration of the liver, kidneys, and
aterus, and other maladies too numerous to
mention.

alous Diseases, such as “fever-sores." “Illp
joint Disease,” “Wiiio Swellings.” and ‘"Old

Consumption.
The bile-poisoned blood, resulting from
faulty action of the liver, passes from the
upper and ri.lit cavity of the heart to tho
lower cavity, i hence directly to the lungs, cir
culating through all parts o these most deli
cate organs. Thu tis-ues of the lungs are
poisoned and irritated, and thus invite th i
scrofulous hum irs with which the blood is
burdened. Iu tills way consumption, which
is scrofula of the lungs, so defined by all the.
most scientific authors, is established.
Our views on the nature of Consumption,
Bronchitis. Laryngitis, and kindred affections,
togeiher with proofs of ihc.r curabil ty. are
to tie found in full in a Complete Treatise, on
tlie-e affections, which will he sen l to any ad
dress on receipt of ten cents iu stamps.
Bronchitis.
The bile-poison'd blood Is in a measure oxy
genized and purified by the lungs; but in ibis
effort th w organ* are overworked and irri
tated. and the foul b o id-poo 01 may lie
imelied iu the man’- offensive breath. Nerv
ous cough, bronchitis, and consumption itself,
are the natural results. The lungs would not
have become diseased bad the liver done its
whole duty.
Asthma,
This spasmodio and distressing ir.aladv Is
generally the result of reflex nervous action,
prod need by impure blood—the Indirect ro
sull*. In oiner words, of improperly-per
formed iu'icucn oa the part of the liver.
Kidney PlKeastft.
The impure blood, which a torpid liver fails
to purify, affect* not only Hie heart anil lungs,
but also other Important organs, in It* clr-
BUistlon it passes f om the lungs back to the
upper left cavity of the heart, thence to the
lower 'avltv. and thence through tho arteries
and capillaries to every tissue and organ ot
the system. Tho kidneys are among the most
Important of those organs, furnishing, as
they do.an important excretion—that of the
urine. They become diseased, being irritated
andooDgested by the presenceof bllc-polsoned
blood, ami Bright's Disease, Diabetes, and
•nd kindred nflooilon*, result. The urine be
comes scanty, hlgh-oolnred, an*! at times
loade' with red depod Is, or other disease
produets, which produce irritation and In
flammation i>( the Bladder, thus adding an
sthcr malady to the already lenghty catalogue
if ailmenta

eases of the Urinary organs ts sent to any

Malarial Poisons,
which are absorbed from the atmosphere
taken into the lungs, are eliminated, or re
jected, from the blood by tho liver when this
organ is in good condition, but when it fails
in such performances the system suffers from
chills, fever, dum ague, congestive chills, aud
other phases of malarial poisoning.
The Symptoms of Liver Diseaso
and its resultant and kindred affections may
differ according to the circumstances, apti
tude, temperament, nge. or constitutional
weakness of the individual and the complica
tionsof ihe disease ami its elage of advance
ment. Not unfrequenlly the complexion be- ;
conn s oale and sallow, and there ia puillness J
under the eves, bilious or sick headache, bit
ter taste in the moutb, tongue coated white
or covered with a brown fur, hacking cough,
fever, restlessness, sometimes an unnatural
greasy appearance of the skin, at others it is
dry and harsh, has scaly or branny eruptions,
pimples, dark blotches, and troublesome itch
ing. The water is frequently scanty aud high
colored. and, if allowed to stand, deposits a
sediment. There is depression of spirits and
a decided tendency to be discouraged and de
spondent. The functional powers of the stom
ach are impaired, there is loss or Irregularity
of appetite, uneasiness in region of theßtom
ach. oppression, sometimes nausea and “wa
terhrash,” or indigestion, flatulency, and acid
eructations; the bowels become irregular,
usually constipated, au i occasionally subject
to obstinate diarrhoea, atteuded with colicky
pains. During the day the circulation is
sluggish, and the feet and hands are apt to be
cold, but at night the pulse is accelerated and
ihu palms of the bands and the solos of the
feet have a burning sensation. The foregoing
symptoms are not ad present in any one case,
uor are any two cases alike in every respect.
Common Sense Treatment.
We appeal to (he reader if it ia not reason
able to suppose that all these maladies that
can be clearly traced to a common origin, or
cause, should be cured by the application of a
remedy known to remove such cause? All
these several divisions of maladies are many
times treated as if entirely unlike in their
nature nud demanding different classes of
remedies, according to the peculiarity of
symptoms manifested. The writer, neverthe
less, eonfl len.ly asserts that all the diseases
named iu this arciolo can be and ars con
stantly cured by the use of a potent altera
tive or blood purifier and liver invigorator.
The active remedial properties of the most
efticient agents now known of the above
classes of medicines are scientifically combin
ed in Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery,
which acts especially upon the liver, and
through that organ upon the blood, cleansing
and invigorating the system generally. The
Golden Metliral Discovery
does not debilitate the liver by over stimula
tion, nor irritate the stomach and bowels by
disturbing the delicate processes of digestion,
neither does it act with severity upon the
blood; but it operates so gently, insensibly,
and yet with so much certainty and efficiency
that it excites the surprise and admiratioa of
all who use it.
If the bowels are unusually sluggish (ebronto
constipation) D is advisable, in conjunction
with the Discovery, to uno
Pleasant Purjjative Pel let,o,
which are powerfully alterative, besides
being mild, gentle, and unirritating
in their operation. They are the natural
a lies—remedial a-sistants -of the Discovery,
and the two work harmoniously together.
They should be taken in small doses, only one
or two per day, and their use perseveringiv
followed until the bowels are properly regu
lated.
Bilious Attacks.
People who are habitually subject to biiiong
attacks, bilious headache, sick headache, and
loss of aupctilc are pleased to find that a
course of the Discovery and Pellets furnishes
immunity from such onsc sand prevents their
usual recurrence. D seaaes of the liver arc
