SAM JONES ON HIS STYLE.
Some Pungent l<emarka by Sam Jones
on Collection#*.
From the JSiltimore Snn.
Sam Jones said at tbo rink at night:
••The church wants a great big hurrah and
carousal over sinners. Bonie of you have
teen whispering around, ‘Brother Jones
found that his style didn’t suit Baltimore,
and so he’s changed.’ Well, all right.
You’ll see. [Laughter.] What do I care
■whether my style suits Baltimore or not.
[Applause.] The Lord help your poor,
little, silly soul, If you thought that 1 had
made a mistake. I just turned my gun a
little until you got up into line so that 1
might hit you. Take care how you lay up
treasures’ upon oariu. I'd like to lease
something for my wife, but i wouldn’t
leave my children anything, tl I had it.
If they areot any account they don’t need
it, and if they areot no aocountevery dol
lar will help to sink them. T wenty thou
sand dollars will buy two hoys out of three
a Through ticket to hell. There's many a
churob dominated by a rich man,and mat
man is as st ingy and mean as a dog. lie's
worth s.'>oo,ooo and he gives SSCO a year,
and for that little sum you let that con
temptible h>w down fellow boss vou. If 1
waa running perdition l wouldn’t iet bint
be a corporal down there. lou needn’t
go to a tax-hook to tell what a fellow’s
worth, for often he’s lied about his prop
erty, but you can tell by what he does ami !
what he gives to God.
“A man worth $1,000,000, and bossing i
around the church and the minister lor
SSOO a year! There are lots of widows
who come to these meetings. Bless you,
sisters. I like these widows. They said
1,100 copper cents were in the col
lection the other night. If there’s
ant tiling that tickles mu it’s to
see ' these long-whiskered old lel
lnwß slipping in the widow’s mite. You
ain’t no’widow. [Laughter.] A man
who will do right towards (loti with his
money is generally one who Ones his duty
''towardsGod in everything else. I’ve no
interest in your collections taken here.
I’ve got nothing to do with them. How
many dollars did this city put into that
opera company? That entertainment
took enough away to run these meetings
until next January. Thank God. religion’s
cheap. A great many people will say,
‘He’s after money.’ When one ot your
committee asked me about the price of
mv coming here 1 said I’d bring enough
money to pay my hoard, and if
the brethren" would pitch in with
me 1 wouldn’t charge a nicke;.
If I'd been after money, Brother
Williams, I’d been gone a week. [ l.augo
ter.] ll 1 was alter money sureeuough. 1
wouldn’t be working here. But, thank
God, there’s nothing in heaven or earth 1
like better than preaching the Gospel.
You can’t hire me tor anything. The idea
of peddling around the Word of God on
the lecture platform. 1 shan’t do it. [Ap
plause.] If you be converted you shall
have all the world cau give you, and your
taxes will he paid for you. 1 never began
to iieshen up mueb before I got to preach
ing. [Laughter.|
“Be not conformed to the world. They
not only have got a big wing o( our
church into the world, but have got some
preachers out to champion them. God
says, ‘Come out and be separate from
the world.’ Here we're eating and living
with the world, and, brethren, how much
more have we to do to be damned with
the world ? There isn't a preacher in this
town whom 1 couldn’t look into the face
and tell bun 1 love him. I’in not preach
ing against men, but against evil prin
ciples. This old world’s been setting the
.fashion for us long enough, hasn’t it?
Instead of us members of the church
tunniug alter the fashion of this world,
let’s set the lashion of this world. [Ap
plause.] We can make it fashionable to
visit tlie sick, to go to prayer meeting,
to have family prayers. 1 followed the
fashtou ol this world until 1 was nearly
i uined. Haven’t much respect for fashion
anywhere. 1 wish I would set the lashion of
dress in this city. I’ve seen more low
necks minus the low sleeves in this city
than I’ve seen for twenty years past.
God help me and mine to dress so that
neither man nor deyil may make a remark
about me. They mat say that mv clothes
don’t tit. But that’s not my fault, God
made me that way.
“If you want to have champagne and
wine suppers, go that way, but I and
mine ain’t going that wav, thank God.
God help me to tie religious, even If no one
1 n the world will speak to me. They say
‘lt looks like Mr. Jones has a suite against
those thattiave something.’ 1 have not.
What 1 say is, use your means in God’s
service instead of to debauch the world,
borne of you, it you’d go home and be re
ligious for a week, your children would he
calling in the neighbors to Identify you
[Laughter.] Lots of children would say
the old man’B going to die. We want the
religion that will make us right to all men
nod to ourselves. You take these truths
home with you. I feel like saying that
if I’ve never done as 1 preach that a Chris
tian should do, Ido it now.” At the con
elusion of the sermon many professed con
version during a revival service which
followed. There have been from JOO to
400 professions of conversions made during
the week.

Commenting mi the publicity given to
