firmer feeling in the spirits Turpentine mar
market during the past week. With the de

of ne previous two weeks holders were
stronger in their views and were not pushing
business at the current figures. At the close

the week were about 2,000 casks. The demand

grades which were generally held

or no inquiry and prices are off slightly. The
sales for the" week were about 4,500 barrels.

the beginning of the season to date, and for

official closing quotations.
Cotton —The market has continued quiet
and steady throughout the week. The offer
mg stock was small, and holders have re
mained firm in their views, and demand full
figures for all desirable grades. The inquiry
was not very spirited, and exporters are only
taking for immediate requirements, conse
qu Dtlv. the business doing was light, al
though larger than for the previous week.
The total sales for the week were 1,300 bales.

The receipts of cotton at this port from all
Sources for the past week were 3,942 bales of
upland and 20 b iles sea udsud, against 354
ha cs uu'and and 10 bales sea island for this
week last year.
The particulars of the receipts have been as
follows: Per Central railroad 3,289, bales up
land; per Savannah, Florida and Western
railroad, 148 hales unland and 20
bales sea island: per Savannah river steam
ers, 525 bales upland.
The exports for the week were 4,012 bales
upland and 710 balessea island; to New Tork,
8.016 bales upland and 710 bales sea island; (o
Philadelphia, 24 bales upland; to’ Baltimore,
840 bales upland; to Boston, 592 bales up
land.
The stock on baud at the close of the mar
ket to-day was 13,310 bales upland and 2,546
bales sea island, against 1,820 bales upland
and 1.372 bale3 sea island at the same time last

The above figures indicate an increase 111
the cotton in sight to date of 36,063 baies a
compared with the same date of 1885. a de
crease of 197,591 bales as compared with the
corresponding date of 1884, and a decrease of
632,678 bales as compared with 1883.

The stock market opened steady this morn
ing. and in the early dealings was somewhat
feverish, with a heavy tone. This, however,
disappeared after the first 15 minutes, when
the market became strong throughout, espe
cially coal stocks. The rise culminated,how
ever, at about 11 a. m., and prices moved off
slowly, the market becoming quieter until
after 1 o’clock, when there was considerable
activity, and the downward movement was
accelerated. Prices continued to fall until
the close of the board, st. Paul,Lackawanna
and Lake Shore contributed about half of the
day’s business of fis-qOUO shares. The net re
sult of the day’s business is the decline of
everything on the active list, ranging from
small fractions to over 1 per cent. Lake
Shore was the greatest su(T T!‘\ losing 1 (0 per
cent., Inion Pacific l si. Paul 1, and the
rest of the market 111 fractional amounts. The

lative grade of wheat in this market, No. 2
Chicago spring, was quoted at the lowest
figure to-day current at any previous time
since December, 1881: at one time during the
trading the quotation for cash wheat was
72(40; May touched the same figure, or 81 (4c
lower than the highest quotation tor the same
option in August of last year; sales were
made of wheat during tlui day for delivery
every month up to May, 1887; sales of April
were made at 79 J .,(#sue; (he market opened
stoady, with the chief trading in wheat con
fined to July, starling at 75' H c aud sold u>
75 3-16 c; but the offerings were very large,
and the price fell quickly to 71‘4, rallied sev
eral times to 74 7 h c, but just before the close of
