The stock market still continues princi
pally in the hands of room traders. London
is a reported buyer of Lake Shore, although
the seller of other stock*. Lake Mi ore con
tinued this morn mg to in* the chief centre of
interest, although other Vanderbilt stocks re
ceived more atienliou tnau usual of laie.
There was talk again about increased earn
ings and a dividend next winter. Northern
Paeilie slocks and Oregon Transcontinental
become the features of the market later in the
afternoon on the belief Unit.the land sales re
cently talked of would surely be carried
through. The market was steady at the
opening, first prices generally being within 1 8
per cent, of last evening’s dosing figure*.
The market was irregular, being strong and
weak in spots, but verv little movement in
prices took place until the latter part of the
afternoon, when material advances wore
made in the same direction, the major por
tion of which wore lost just previous to the
close, which, however, was steady at quota
tions. Sales aggregated 206.089 share*. The
closing prices show r irregular changes, but are
high in a majority of instances. Advances of
none of the active list exceed % percent.,
except that of Northern Pacific preferred.

Chicago. July 22.—Corn grow’in strength
while tra*4ers were sleeping, for when they
came down town to-day they found toe mar
ket full lc higher than they left it yesierday
afternoon To-day's bulge was started on
the curb after the regular trading yesterday;
an*l additions made in the size of it this morn
ing. About every broker operating in the
pit had advices of continued hot ami dry
weather and other news unfavorable to grain.
Hence everybody was buyer, and the rush
was by no means confined to local operators.
Manv orders eame from St. Louis, where re
ceipts to-day were only 21 cars. Here they
were :193 cars. September opened at 41%c,
quickly going to 43c, though at outside figures
not very much changed hands first time. The
market closed strong at outside figures.
Wheat ruled very weak and tended steadily
downward within the rangeot about lc. As
usual, outside orders were lacking, and there
was no support given the market by the local
crowd. August opened at sold off to
77%. then up to 78c, off agajn to recov
ered f- £c, and olosed easy at quotations.
Provisions were inclined to inactivity, but not
(iiiotably dull.
