The general, though moderate, feeling
existing last evening in favorof better figures
found expression tills morning in a higher
range of values for nearly everything on the
active li.t. Grangers, however, were Hie
prominent exception to the general rule, the
impression prevailing that influential mem
bers of the Chicago parly would oppose any
advance at present in tlielr r-p.-ciall lcs. Early
advitv s from London showed that New Y'ora
Central hud advanced over 1 percent, from
the closing price of last evening, ami heavy
buying by foreign houses quickh brought in
room traders, and during tnc entire morning
the stock was active and strong. The market
turned on dealings in Now York ( enlral, and
the remainder of the list, which were quiet
but firm Later tbe market became dull until
toward the close, when the story was circu
lated that Lake shore bud succeeded In nego
tiating a loan for $25,000,006, which would en
able Ihe company to pay thoclaimsof the
Nickel pi ate bondholders, and so obtain com
plete control of the property. Tbe report
lacks continuation, bill, it is suld by foreign
houses, ami that tin 4 movement is ihe cause
of the strength in Vanderbilts on tne oilier
side. The rest of the market presents no fea
ture of importance, except a marked advance
in Norfolk and Western on a favorable show
lug of earnings of the company. Final prices
generally show advances of fractional
amounts, but Norfolk and Western preferred
is up 1* and New York Central 1(4 percent.

Chicago. July 27.— Corn boomed this morn
ing, opening a lull cent higher than it closed
ytsierda*. The bnt of appreciation came
in on the curb this morning after it became
known that receipts were smaller than ex
pected, and that the hot dry weather still
prevailed in the corn belt throughout the
Southwest. After the opening there was an
advance 01 another cent. The early market
wa wild and prices differed over %c in the.
onposide sides of tbe pit. The bull manipu
lators were hclpe 1 by a report claiming 20 per
cent, of the Kansas crop as worthless and 30
percent, more, as badly damaged bv drought
and bugs. From an opening at 43,£c tnore
was a pretty steady advance to 44^-:; then a
reaction iu B!£c, and again an upward spurt
to 45c. The excitement wore away toward
neon, but the c ose was very firm. Trading
was active all through the session, and aggre
gated an enormous amount. An advance was
made by wheat and was fairly well sustained.
The boom in corn gave local traders an ex
cuse for buying and outsider* tor sending in
iretty fair orders. September opened at 76 7 gc,
sold as high as 77 7 H c, then off to 7714 c,, and up
again to 789-16 c, and closed Ht practically the
highest figures of the session. Provisions,
especially mess pork, were stronger, and
