of the prisoner’s wife, and proved
it by the evidence of Mrs. Jones’
father. Judge Marshal Clarke at once j
discharged Murphy from the jury tor I
cause, and shortly after discharged the ,
entire jury on motion ot Solicitor H ill, hr- |
cause Murphy bad been locked up over
night with the jury. The case was then |
continued until Jan. 17. When tried it j
promises scandalously sensational de- |

A man named Myers, living on Ogle
thorpe street, crea ed a sensation ihis
morning by administering a cruel heating
to bis wife. She managed to summon an
officer, when Alters attempted to escape.
Be was caught, however, and bis case
will be investigated to-morrow.
The City Council to-night adopted the
report of the commute'' recommending
an appropriation of $25,000 lor a paid tire
department.

The Knights in the Field With a
Full Ticket for County Offices.
Augusta,Ga., Jan. 4.—For weeks there
has beeu waged a political contest here
which for bitterness and determination
bas been unsurpassed iu local politics.
The Knights ol Labor have decided that
the tune has come tor them to play their
trumps, and are out with a lull ticket tor
county offices to-morrow. To-night politi
cal meetings are being held all over to* n,
and both sides are confident ot success.

The earthquake was felt here about 6
o’clock this morning.
Fire in Jesse Thompson & Co.'s this
morning destroyed the storehouse, in

moeting of citizens held to-night resolu
tions were adopted to the effect that the
oitv immediately petition the Legislature
for a repeal of its charter. A committee
was appointed to f ■ ame a bill and bring it
before the Legislature. Ibis action is
taken to escape the payment of bonds
amounting to $1,500,000 issued during the
reconstruction period. The resolutions
provide tor the protection and pay ment oi
those bondholders who have signified
their willingness to accept 50c. on the
dollar.
A Heavy Sentence.
Baltimore, Jan. 4. William H. Rich
ardson, proprietor ol the People’s Voice,
a newspaper published at Towson, Balti
more county, was convicted sometime
since of having published a criminal lllml
on Judge Fowler, one of the circuit
Judges. The case was taken to the Court
of Appeals and the verdict affirmed. To
day Judge Watters, an associate of
Judge Fowler, sentenced Richardson to
two years imprisonment and imposed
upon him a fins of ssoo.
Minnesota's Governorship Fight.
Br. Paul, Minn., Jan. 4.—A. A. Arnes,
late candidate for Governor of this Htato
on the Democratic ticket, appeared before
Judge Corrie, ol the Municipal Court, this
morning and took the oath of office as
Governor. It it understood this proceed
ing it preliminary to emit sting the seat
ot Gov.-eleot McGill, who was inducted
into office this tiU-rnoon.
BURGLARS IN \ POST OFFICE.

340 secured by Cracksmen.
Chicago, Jan. 4.—Burglars got into
the sale of ihe Southwes postal Station
last night and stoie $11,340. Entrance was
effected by smashing in a glass window
in the rear door. The combination han
dle ol the safe was bruised so that it
would not turn, and then a hole was
drilled in the sale outside that part of ilie
lock mechanism which connects the com
bination lock with the bolts. This hole
was then tapped and the bolt screwed in
and turned with snen force that the
piece of lock against which it
was forced broke off and fell to ibe floor
of the sare, where il was found this morn
ing. The bolts were easily turned and
the sale opened. The burglars took noth
ing but currency and 2c stamps. There
were about Ut.CUO letters in the vault but
of these just five were opened. One regis
tered letter was rifled and $2 taken from it,
but nothing was gotten from the others. So
careful wore ihe burglars that even the
borings from the sale were carefully
swept up and not a trace ol their presence
waslelt.

New Orleans. Jan. 4.—The sugar
house of F. B Fleitas’ Cnrinne plantati in
at St. Bernard was burned to-day. The
loss is $45,000. The property was fully

on Gen. Adolph Meyers’ (’ora plantation,
in Abbeville parish, was totally burned
to-day. The loss is SIOO,OOO. The prop
erty is fully insured in home and lorcign

A Doctor Said to Have Adminis
tered Two Ounces of Chloroform.
Scranton. Pa., Jan. 4.—Tho Coroner’s
jury impaneled to investigate the cause of
the death of John E. Connolly, who died
Sunday as Dr. John B. Amman was about
to periorm an operation on him, to-day
lound the physician guilty ot gross negli
geuce. He administered chloroform with
out assistance, lay or medical, and as he
was about to make an incision his patient
expired. Dr. Amman claims ho adminis
tered only between two and three drachms
of chloroform, but members of the de
ceased’s (auwly testified that the quantity
used was at. Last, two ounces. The Coro
ner will place the case in the hands of
District Attorney Edwards, who will pre
sent it to the grand jury now in session
here.
Wabash’s Receivers.
St. Louis, Jan. 4.—Judge Cooley, the
new receiver ol the Wabash lines east of
t; e Mississippi river, and his legal ad
viser, Henry Crawford, arriv li from Chi
cago to.day and were in conference this
morning with Receivers Humphreys and
fiutt, James F. llow, their ag nt, and
VVelis 11. Blodgett, their attorney. A
general discussion of the Wabasli proper,
tv and atiaiis was engaged in, and it was
decided that the two lines shall operate
in harmony and that the syslem shall re
main complete, 60 far as its traffic is con
cerned.

The toilettes worn at a dinner party
recently given in honor of Mrs. James
Brown Rotter were very handsome. Miss
Me Lane, the daughter of the United
Stales Minister, had on a charming toi
leite in pale blue tulle, figured with
raised while dots and trimmed with
fringesof pale blue crystal. Ihe Coun
tess de Kessler’s dress was composed of a
short skirt in tearose satin, covered with
flounc sof point lace and having a over
dress and corsage in pale blue Sicilienn**.
The corsage was cut square, and bad
sleeves ol point lace reaching to the el
bow, the seam up the side of the arm be
iug left open and caught together with
small bow,s of pale blue ribbon; orna
merits of turquoises and diamonds and a
spray o( diamond roses in the hair.
Mrs. William Seligman wore a toilette
with corsage and skirt In peachsione

the same hue, and having a train ol plain
satin. Tne square-cut corsage was

SEC. IX. Every person or corporation own
ing or holding per-onal property in eitid city
:s vannahi on the first day of January, 188',
shall make a return thereof to the City Treas
urer within twen y and ys after tha date; and
a 1 returns of personal property shall be in
spected, as soon as they are made, by a per
son to be designated by the Finance Commit
tee of Council, who shall carefully and criti
cally examine tne same, and if he find., or has
cause to believe, that such return is not prop
erly made so as to show the amount of per
sonal property owned by the person or per
sons or corporation making the return sub
ject to taxation, then he sha 1 for hwith pro
ceed to assess the said per onai property of
said person or corporation at its true value,
as near as cau be ascertained by lum, and as
soon as the same is made ho shall send a copy
of me same to the person or corporation whose
return is thus corrected; and the person or
Corporation whose return is thus corrected
shan have the right to apneai from such cor
rected return to the Committee ou Assess
ments of the Cily Council within ten days
after the mailing of the notification of the cor
rection of said return; and said Committee
shall bear such return as soon as may be con
venient thereafter, notifying said appellant of
tlu time and place of hearing said appeal; and
alter hearing such appeal, the said Commit
tee on Assessments shall fix the return of said
person or corporation at such -um a- may. in
their opinion, be correct andjust, and shall
immediately notify seen parly of the sum so
fixed by them; and the said person or corpo
ration may, witnin four days ot ihe rendition
of such judgment, appeal therefrom lo ti e
Mayor and Aldermen of the cl y of Savannah,
wuere such appeal shfUl be heard and deter
mined as other appeal cases are heard and
deiermmed by the Mayor and Aldermen of
the cnyof Savannah; and the judgment of
the Mayor and Aldermen of the city of Sa
vaunan shad be final, aud determine the
amount upon which the City Treasurer shall
coded the taxes prescribed by the ihird and
fifth sections of this ordinance; if the return
of personal properly, as made by the person
or corporation, shall be ac< epted by the per
son so designated by the Finance Committee
