WEEKLY REPORT.
OFFICE OF THE MORKING NEW'S. i
SIVANNAII, lr\.. Jan. 7. 1857. J
General U::marks -1 ho general mantel !
was very quiet la wee’; The eohl and wet |
weather during the week rather retarded
trade in pretty ii) <ch all departments. The
volume of busiuess shows no improvement
and the movement was everywhere light.
There were few features in the general mar
ket of interest, and no price changes of im
portance, except tlie advance in
coflee and bacon. There was
ft fairly steady demand in the grocerj'
trade and a good shipping business was had.
In other bran dies of the jobbing trade little
can be said, as there was only a very small
business going on. buyers having apparently
no' recovered from the effects of the recent
holidays. Collections were very slow. The
money market was quiet and easy. The
security market was comparatively dull,
and there was nothing n the market of
special feature except the recent contest for
Central railroad control. Central stock wan
rather weak and fell off several points. The
appended review will show the tone and lat
est quotations of the different markets at the
closing to-day:
Naval Storks—There was a fair inquiry
for spirits turpentine, white prices for the
most part were firm and steadily advanced
until Wednesday, when 37c, was reached. The
market theu became easier and prices fell oil
slightly, closing Urm at 3lie. for regu! irs. The
total sales for tne.wek were about 1,500 cask-.
Kosin—The market was somewhat irregular
and unsettled, opening the week with
prices firm and higher for the
common grades and closing easier
at a slight decline. There was a good steady
demand throughout the week, but the. cold
weather interfered with sampling, and tin
consequence wms a very small stock was
offering. The sales tor the week were about
30,000 barro 8. In another column will b>-
found a weekly comparative statement of
receipts and exports from A iril 1 to dare, and
for the same jic iod lasi . car, showing the
stock on hand and on shipboard not cleared,
together with the official closing quotatons.
Kick.—During last week the market was
comparatively dull and, to some extent,
nominal. There was a very small deman i
and a light business doing for the wedk. The
total sales were about suo barrels,on the basis
of the following quotations:

Cotton—There \v s a marked improve
ment in the market over the previous week’s
business. There was a steady demand, but
the offering stock was exceedingly light and
theio al of business smaller than it oth r
wise would hare oe >n. There U aheavy la i
ing off in the week’s receipts compared with
the previous week and that of la*t year. This
Is looked upon as confirming the recent es
timates as *o the size of the crop. This li ts had
the effect of stifTenlng price'*, which were
only advanced l-!(ic. all round. The total
sales for the wek - ere 11.700 bales. The fol
