The house was a large two-storv build

Tears ago there was a citizen of Worth
who owned a valuable deer bound. The
hound would go driving without its
owner, and kept Itself poor through the
excessive exercise. Finally, the owner
tied the dog lo a block of wood. One duv
the dog could not be found. W bile searuu
lffg for him the hunter heard the dog open
some distance in the woods. Going to
the spot the dog was not to be seen, but
the animal opened several hundred yards
further on. The dog barked only two or
three times. When the owner arrived at
where he supposed the dog to be. lie
heard him open still further on. This
w&e kept up for some time, till finally the
owner saw the dog lay the block on the
ground, bark three times, take the block
up in its mouth again and move along on
the trail. The dog was trailing a deer,
and carried the biook in its mouth, ex
cept when it paused to let its master
know where it was.
At the last meeting of the General
Council of Atlauta bids were opened lot
a five-year contract lor paving streets
and were reterred to the Street Commit
tee, who are to report at the regular meet
ling to-day upon toe advisability of letting
tho contract to the lowest bidder, it is
authoritatively stated that a majority of
. Ptm committee are inclined to favor letting
’ the contract for the term specified to Mr.
kßamuel H. Venable, general manager ol
fftfie Southern Granite Company, toe low est
bidder, whose figures were as lollows:
kAielgian blocks, $1 per square yard;
pnaoadam, 84o.; rubble, 820. ft this con
tract is Jet as indicated, it is expected
that four or five-yoar contracts will be
let next year for curbing, sidewalks aud
grossings, which had been let for the cur
rent year to Mr. M. E. Maher. This con
templated contract, if consummated, will
embrace the largest deal that the city au

amounting to front $400,000 to '5500,-
WO, lor the street paving part alone,
and If tbo curbing, sidewalks aud street
crossings (and the laying of sewer mam*,
which is also being advocated) be added,
the aggregate will swell to enormous
proportions.
Thursday night the entire street ear
line, owned aud operated heretofore by
the Borne Street Railroad Company, was
purchased by the Rome I,aud, iron and
improvement Company, This is one of
the most progressive steps vet taken by
this company, aud practically settles the
treat question lor Kouie, viz., that as to
how or when th# various street railways
so much needed, and so coAuautly
hoped for, ehuii be built. The
company will proceed to open
out streets and thoroughfares to
every available point of then lunded in
terests, and as soon as the grading can
be effected will lay the truck lor their car
line extension. This will do more, per
haps, to enhauco the value of private
property than any other one enterprise
now on foot, for Certain it is that all prop
erty rises from 60 to lUO per cent, us soon
as the streets aro graded and car lines
established, lu order to reach anil pene
trate the Hamilton lands, which is about
3,000 acres, and the east aud South
Rome lauds, which fully equals the
Bamlltou tract, in ail about O.OhO
acres, there will he about twelve
miles of car line necessary to be put in
operation. The company now has ample
lutids paid into the treasury to push this
work to completion at a very early date,
and uo time will he lost oiher than is
caused by Incidental delays. According
to the valuation ol land in and around

Tho little house used as a oolored Bap

was burned down last Tuesday night. It

substituted. This action augmented the
sectional strife.

The sales of strawberries, for so far iu
the season, have been highly satisfactory
to Clay county growers, notwithstanding
reports ol an overstocked market. A
prominent grower says that his average
sales, for hurries shipped by rail, have
netted him 25c per quart. Of course

At Brooksville last Monday A. L.

ol ill fame. There was considerable op
position to tho prosecution, and the trial
occupied three days, some gross indigni

Later advices from Millview place the
lumber loss by Thursday’s fire at 2,5140,000
feet, valued at $25,000. The mill was
valued at SOO,OOO, and insured for $30,000;
the insurance on the lumber is SIO,OOO.
The burned mill w T aa built about tour
years ago, and had a cutting capacity of
80,000 teet per day. The burning or this
null leaves but one mill to furnish busi
ness for tue l’ensacola aud Bcrilido rail
road, which, some years ago, was led by
live mills running night and day. All ol
the lumber bunted had been sold
and was awaiting shipment. -Mr.
George AV. Robinson, the owner,
arrived in Pensacola from Mobile,
aud vjent to Millview. It Is not ktiuwii
that be will rebuild the mill, and it is
thought that he will transfer tue whole
of bis lumber operations to Mess Point,
-Miss., ut which place he has extensive
milling interests. The steamer and fire
men Iroiu Pensacola were instrumental
in saving many millions of feet of lum
ber; they arrived too late to save the mill
and the lumber close adjoimug it. The
slab conveyer was built directly north
from the mill, and a lilgu wind was blow
ing from the north when the fire broku
out. The sparks from the burning mill
were carried clean over the old mill, set
ting fire to the shanties in the negro
quarters, many of which were destroyed.
At Fernandina, about 12 o’clock Thurs
day noon, fire was discovered on tfie roof
of the large building at Cedar aud Second
streets, occupied by tho late William
Lawtey as a cotton gin, cotton and seed
warehouse. Owing to the iufiammublo
nature of the building and contents tho
entire premises were soon in a sheet of
flaiue, and past the possibility ol saving.
A gale of wind from the northwest was
blowing, aud within au hour from the
first alarm the fire had spread through
the dry grass and underbrush to the
southeast, on the outskirts of the city,
extending over 200 acres or more uf ter
ritory. This space is largely filled with
negro cabins, the occupants of which
turned out with a will to fight
the llames. Several dwellings in me
southern part of the town were at times
in great danger, but were suved by tho
efforts of tho occupants and tnendly help,
but at tbs expense of numerous fences
aud some sheds, eto. The grass and
brush continued burning nearly all
night. It was fortunate that the fire
originated in the southern part of the
foril it had been in the northern
part its extent could hardly be estimated.
Tue loss vs as SO,OOO on machinery, $5,000
on stock, including thirty-one hales sea
island colton, and about $4,000 on build
ings. so tar asfs now known, there was
but $2,500 total Insurauce, that being held
by Mr. Lawtey’s estate.

Solicitor .Jervey has addressed a cir

First circuit, instructing them how to
act in cases of petty larceny. Under the
recent decision of the Supremu Court in
the case of the State against Robert
Jenkins, trial justices wi re declared to
have uo jurisdiction in cases of petty
larceny, and the only recourse was to
commit all prisoners charged wltU the
slightest, thett to jail until the next Ses

Solicitor Jervey Instructs the trial
justices to take all evidence of wit

It is presumed that the intention ot the

FLORIDA
AND
CALIFORNIA.
ORLA!\3DO,
The County Seat of Orange County, has no
complaint to make against the numberof peo
ple who are going to California. The Regis
ters of the thirteen hotels in Orlando show
two visitors to one this season over any past
year.
The fact is, that tho vacancy in Jaekson
sonville and St. Augustine is not caused by
the number of people who have gone to Cali
fornia, but by the fact that llie great number
of peonle who are reining to Florida are find
ing their way to Orlaudo and other points
South. There are over one hundred thou
sand dollars worth of brick buildiugs now
going up in Orlando. Street car tracks are
being laid over the entire city. Water Works
and Electric Lights are m process of con
struction. In fact, Orlaudo is on tho biggest
boom she lias ever known.
Statistics show that more property has
changed hands in and around Orlando than
iti Birmingham. Alabama. WATKINS * CO.,
situated next door to First National Bank,
who are the leading Real Estate Agents in
South Florida, are constantly busy with their
handsome team showing visitors around, and
claim that they aro daiug more business thau
all the other agencies in the city. They have
made a point of taking no land ou tlieir hooks
held at an exorbitant price. They invite un
inspection of tlieir S2O per aero laud, situated
three miles from Orlando. They have also
first-class pine land, seven miles from Orlan
do, at sls per aero. Good building lots in Or
lando at $250. First-class pine land $2 to $5
per acre. They have two orange groves that
lhty guarantee will pay 20 per eeut. net on
tin: investment. Iu connection with their
i nice is a first-class reading room in which is
kept all the standard English and American
papers. The distinctivo features of this
Agency is that they sell only for commissions
and do not do a SPECULATIVE business.
The phenomenal success of WATKINS & CO.
it also due to the fact, that they always im
press upon parties placing land in tlieir hands
the advantage of making quick sale at small
profits. If you should go to Florida do not
fad to visit Orlaudo. If you visit Orlaudo do
not fail to Visit WATKINS & CO.
