Jenkins, the man who was shot by

A freight train ran off Saturday after
noon at Port Valley, making a wreck of
such pioporlions that a track was built
around it to allow the Columbus train to
pass. As the Southwestern train could
not pass the passengers were transferred
to the Columbus train, which arrived in
Macon about an hour late. No one was
hurt in the accident.
The people of Clayton county are aris
ing to protest against the manufacturing

Two of A. M. VValker's children, living
near Reynolds, were bitten by a mad dog

killed, but tbe condition of the children
is such as to excite serious alarm, and
the father is earnestly endeavoring to
prooure a madstone, after having con
sulted tbe best medical skill.

crystallized variety, ami is pronounced

A negro by the name of Wiley Smith,
of Baker county, who does his trading In
for years been turning white, his entire
body having been almost completely re

said, haa the principles of the whitest
kind oi a while man. being in every wuy

On some of the largest store doors in
Athens chalk marks have lately been

At Macon between 3 and 4 o’clock Sat
urday morning Mrs. Finney, who keeps a
boarding bouse on Plum street, was
aroused by a noise in an adjoining room
like someone blundering about among
tbe chairs and tables. Mrs. Finney arose
and went into the room, and just as she
entered the apartment she stumbled over
a chair and kicked up a terrible rumpus,
wbica so frightened the burglar that he
made a dash lor a w indow and escaped
wlih the shattered fragments of an
earthquake clinging about Ins ears. The
lady siruck a Sight and found that noth
ing had been removed, the burglar not
having had time to appropriate anything.
In a letter from Jasper, Fla., to tbe
Sandersville Herald Is told the curious
story of the enlistment of Lewis Powell.
The captain ot a company organized for
the Confederate army in Hamilton coun
ty. Fla , fells of a young man who was
brought to bun. giving me above name,
iie made a brave soldier, but was easily
led astray by bad as-oeiates. lie fre
quently said that. If be had tue chance,
e would go right into the White House
and kill the President. He was made a
prisoner at toe battle of Gettysburg, and
entered a L’Dion cavalry regiment in
preference to going to prison. Later lie
appeared in Baltimore, giving tue name
oi Payne. ’There he fell into the hand-. ■ '
Booth, who easily led him into bis scheme
to assassinate Mr. Lincoln.
Lonnie Mason, a steady young man of
Clarke couritv, was going out on some
business, and was told bv nis father to
eairv the gun along to protect his horse
anil himseii from tne numerous mad dogs
that inflict the country. On passing Mr.
Henley’s a very ferocious dog ran at the
horse and then attacked Mr. Mason in
tue buggy, following him past ihe house.
Mr. Mason feed to get rid of the dog, not
seeing Mr. Henley’s little child. One
shot is said to have glanced and struck
the little boy, who was standing out be
side the road, but tbe skin is not broken,
and the little fellow is all right. The
matter was accidental, as to the child.
Mr. Henley took a warrant out for Mr.
Mason, who at once gave bond for ap
pearance at the Court of Inquiry, to be
held on the Hist Saturday in April.

near Dr. L. L. Newsom’s place, at Cres
cent City, 'and rendering it available for

bay is said to he from 8 to 10 feet deep.
Friday's Pensacola Commercial: To
day Messrs. Charles Evans and Daniel
Griffin, the latter of whom is ostensibly
the proprietor of the Bay View Varieties,
were, or will be, arrested on a charge of
violating the ordinance of the city pre
scribing tbe payment ol $2,000 as a license
to sell liquor in certain connections.
The turtle fishermen of Cedar Key are
busy getting in order for the summer’s
work. Beats are to be overhauled, nets
to knit and hang, and grub to put aboard
tor the cruise. This is an important in
dustry at that point, bringing in many a
dollar to support a ueedy and deserving
class of population. There aie quite
a number of buyers in the field, and tue
prospect is good for better prims than
usual.
J. H. Sadler, of South Apopka, reports
having received from $5 to $5 50 per crate
lor his peas, which he has sbippt and to the
New York markets. Three years ago Mr.
Sadler bought nineteen acres of land just
outßide of the present town site of Oak
land, paying SB4 25 uer acre. The first
year he shipped 1500 crates of tomatoes
from four acres, realizing enough from
the crop to pay for the entire purchase of
land. Last year, wnich was exception
ally had, and quite late on account of the
freeze, he netted $1,300 in shipments of
(ieas, tomatoes and beaus irom tue same
four acres.
Pensacola Commercial: Geronimo Is at
times so gracious to visitors that tho Hit

red gentleman’s autograph, a miserable
scrawl that might be as much anything
else as that for which it is intended. At
other times his medioineship is surly, and
refuses his signature to the expectant
curio hunter. One of the latter class re
cently found Geronimo out of sorts and
lulled to get the coveted prize. Not to be
outdone, however, he retired behind a
brick pillar, and a lew moments later was
found making every kind of a scrawl with
a pencil on several pieces ot paper he had
torn out of bis notebook. “What in Ih ■
world are you doing y” asked a friend.
“Only getting a few of that old red devil’s
autographs for my frfeods in St. Louis,”
said the souvenir man; “look here, ain’t
they a fac simile? and my friends will
never know tbe difference anyway.”

Gold has been found in considerable
quantities on Mr. Stephen Klmore’splace
near Greenwood.
A library association has been formed
and now it is settled that Greenwood is to
have a public library.
The dwelling of the Rev. J. B. Mack,
rear Fort Mill, has been destroyed by
fire. Loss, $1,500; insurance, SBOO.
Two colored children were recently
burned to death on the Hemphill planta
tion, near Blairsville, in York county.
The dwelling occupied by Mr. A, 15.

ground on the night of March 12. Loss,

Tiie gin-house and the cotton press of
Messrs. Funderburk & Massey, near
Dudley, in Chesterfield county, was de
stroyed a few days ago by fire. About
nine bales ol cotton and a quantity of
cotton setd were destroyed.
A daughter of Mr. M. Jenkins, of Brun
son, jumped from tne window of tne sec

At the late competitive examination
held in Flurencn to fill a vacancy at West
Point for tbe Nlxth district, out of nine
teen applicants, who constituted the

in the district, E. O. Ingram, son ot Dr.
John J. Ingram, was the successiul ap
plicant.
At Union about 12 o’clock Thursday
the large and beautiful residence of Col.
S. M. Rice caught on file and was con
sumed in a short while. It is supposed
that the fire originated by tats with
matches, as it caught in the garret, where
no fire has been used. Very few of the
household effects were saved, and a large
amount of jewelry and sliver was con
enrued. Ine insurance is about $3,000,
which will not cover the loss by a great
deal.
