appointed to solicit subscriptions for the
Bacon. Birmingham anil LaGrange rail
road made a canvass of the city late ’-bis
afternoon. In a short time they suc
aeeded inrauing $20,000. From the re
ception met with there is little doubt that
the entire amount r.ieded will be quickly

fested here in the esterpriie, and it is re
tarded aa the coming railroad. This
feeling bas been considerably strength

county, met at the houseof Webb Walker
to take part in a valentine party. A large

the party, and before it broke up Hargett
land Calhoun, for reasons which
mave never been discovered, became
Involved in a difficulty resulting in liar
gem stabbing and killing Calhoun. He
made his escape, although efforts wore
mad a to capture him, arid for three years
nothing was heard of him until to-day,
when he appeared at the residence of
Sheriff Talhy, ol Harris county, and
elated that he wished to he placed under
aru st. The Sheriff brought him to Co
lumbus, and placed him in Muscogee
county jail for sale keeping.

Trenton, Ga , March 24, —Dade
Superior Court adjourned Saturday night,
feaving held only one week. The only
Civil case of importance was that of “an
Upper and ft lower mill.” The owner of
the upner mill sued the lower lor backing
Up its water several times,and always got
Judgment until this time, when the jury
Scolded for the lower mill.
Thomas Payne (colored), whs burglar
ized the store of Case & Sin six weeks
ego, was sent to Hie penitentiary for
eighteen years. IV. R. Jobe was sn
tenced to twelve months in jail or to pav
-a line of $125 for disturbing a temperance
■neeting and committing an assault on
t)r. Morris, one ol toe temperance leaders.
Two convicts from Cole City camp were
tried as leaders in the mutiny of last full,
End had their time extended lour years
each. The time ol one w ould have been
aut in a year. The ether had seven years.
T’be penitentiary brought over seventeen
ether convicts as witnesses for and
against them.
A charter was granted incorporating
the Lookout Valley Iron and Coal Com
pany. which will probably result In a Tur
nace being built at this place in the near
future.

West Point, Ga., March 28.—The
West Point Mills, about live miles from
town, W. C. A 1.. I.anier, proprietors,
caught lire tills evening at T o’clock. The
cause is unknown, hut the tire is sup
posed to have originated at the wbeel-
Jiouse. Many other large buildings will
burn. Tiie flouring mills, picking-room
and warehouse arc insured for about half
their value. About 200 operatives are
tfirown out of employment. The proprie
tors will rebuild at once.

Tennille, Ga., March 28.—At a negro
gambling frolic at the M -allows Crossing
•of the AVrightsvllle railroad Sunday
Bight, among turpentine hands, a dispute
arose about a few cents. One tired on
.another with a shot gun. wounding him
fo the hand. The wounded man shot his
assailant dead. The namt-s are unknown.
Rain, acoompanied by nail, fell to-day.
The weather is very oold, and fruit aiid
vegetables may be killed to-night If the
Wind subsides.

liam M. Wimberly, one of this city’s
prominent merchants, died suddenly this
morning.

Thousands gather every night to hear
him, and the uegroes declare hun to be

cure any ill by aunoinliog. To-night
while Yellowstone Kit was expatiating
to an immense crowd of the virtues and
powers of his nostrums, nis hands
giutgring with sparkling diamonds
and his shirt front bedecked
with heavy gold pins and precious stones,
his neck gilded with a huge gold chain
some six :eet in length and his body cov
ered with a royal robe, he was suddenly
seized by the hand and pulled from the
piatiorm by a powerful negro man, who
it was believed at the time was attempt
ing to disposses Kit of bis finger rings,
the negro held on and Kit called to a
policeman to arrest the bewildered
darky. The excitement of the
crowd became intense lor a few
seconds, and was calmed only by the
negro being take a way and Kit urging the
people to be calm. The negro, whose
name is /leery Thomas, said be had a
“spell to come over bun” while the hand
ol Kit was near him, and autos touching
it was periectly well again. The excite
ment of the negroes over his alleged
mysterious power amounts almost to a
irenzy, and they are paying him thou
sands of dollars for his lalth and an
uoluiing cure.

Sanderson, F’la., March 28.—Argu
ment was heard by Judge Baker here to
day on a motion to dissolve the injunc
tion obtained by the advocates ot Sander
son to prevent the remora! of the county
records to McCienny as the new site of
the county. The .Fudge decided in lavor
of Mct.lenuy by dissolving the injunction.
Sanderson will appeal the case to the
State Supreme Court.

Pittsburg, Pa., March 28.—The Pitts
burg iron manufacturers sav that the
card rale of iron will hardly go any higher
than it Is at present, as representatives
of Hweedish aud English iron Arms have
recently invaded Pittsburg and are
making desperate efforts to place orders
for foreign iron. The manufacturers fear
that another advance will let in foreign
producers. They also say that Eastern
iron men now admit that they made a
mi.take in deolarlng tne last advance.
The iron business is not as good as it
was a lew weeks ago. Pig iron has de
cllii'd 50c. per ton during the past mouth
and muck bar $1 50.
Killed in Its Mother’s Arms.
St. Lours, March 28.—A special says:
“A passenger train on the iron Mountain
road to-day struok a broken rail at ti.fl.
liard. Mo. IT.e ladies coach and Pull
man sleeper left the tracks and turned
over, badly damaging both cars. Mrs
Honeyrflit held her child In her arms when
the jolt occurred, and being thrown for
ward the child was killed and she was
badly Injured, as were several other pas
sengers. The train was moving rapidly,
and the coaches were turned over and
over.”

Philadelphia, March 28.—Upon the

Pleas to-day granted permission to the as

marketable condition. Nothing bas yet
been heard of the whereabouts of James
Hunter, the missing member ot the firm.
Canada’s Military Powers.
London, March 28.—1n the House of
CoiMiuons this evening Sir Henry Hol
land, Colonial Secretary, replying to a
question, stated that the Canadian Par
liament possessed authority to purchase
and direct tke operations of armed cruis
ers in Canadian waters without too con
sect ol the Imperial government. The
act of 1807 gave Canada power to legis
late in all mailers relative to the militia
and military and naval defense.

ger says that the Emperor received 1,048
telegrams congratulating him upon his

Tulane, the philanthropist and founder of
Tulane University at New Orleans, died

The Wrong Woman.
From the Monitor.
An amusing incident occurred not long
since at tne Cose of au evening meeting at one
of onr diuretics. A well-known eiizeu and
wife attended the service, going tbitneras
was their custom in their own vehicle. When
the meeting was over the husbaud told the
wife to he out at the door so as to oo ready to
go home when he came along with the horse
and sleigh. She was promptly on time and a
team came up, amanheid oiit his hand and
helped her in and drove otf with her They
had not gone a great way when she said: “it
seems to me you got the horse quick.” The
man looked at her a moment in surprise on
hearing a strange voice, and exclaimed:
“Good gracious! 1 have got the wrong wo
man.” fie turned the horse around and drove
back to the place of meeting, where an ex
change was made, and he started home once
more with the right woman.
A Terrible Leak.

A Maryland Legend.

Did you know that Marshal Nev, “the
bravest ot the brave.” the most interesting
aud attractivo of all Napoleon's marshals, was
a Maryland man? That is the tradition they
have over in Cecil County. They say that his
name was Mitchell Rudolph, aud that he was
a Captain of cavalry uuder “Light Horse
Hurry I,ce” during the revolutionary war.
He is described by the tradition as having
been a most lovable and ehivalric young man,
wilb military genius which would not lethiin
rest aud rust after the revolutionary war w as
over, but sent him to France, where he rose to
fame and fortune.
In Denver, 111,, there is, laid by a local ben,
an egg that is attracting considerable atten
tion, and justly, too. It is smaller and iigbter
‘man an ordinary egg, and will not lie or

Ist. All steamships anil vessels from South
America, Central America. Mexico, West In
dies, .Sicily, Sardinia, ports of Italy south of
4(1 degs. North latitude, Algeria and coast of
Africa between 10 degs. North and 14 (legs.
South latitude, will bo subjected to close
quarantine and he required to report at the
Quarantine Station.
