The London market for Americans tiffs
morning came strong and :tci ive, and undor
the impetus of foreign buying orders otir
market was higher mol strong. Cliques took
advantage of this movement to unload to a
certa n extent, whiio there woe cuns: lorable
covering by-short* at tbe &ame time. 1 lie
result was a feverish and unsettled market
until later in the day. when buying became
more general, and a more decidedly firm tone
was imparteu to dealings. Reading and
Jersev central were again the centre of at
traction, although tr.id’ug in toe former
allowed a marked decrease Iroro that, of yes
terday. The strength of the stoek wss stimu
lated b\ reports of non-agreement of the
'rased line* to combine against reorganiza
tion. There was considerable foreign buying
alt-o in tho stock. Omaha became a conspicu
ous feature to-day, and Manhattan was
boomed upon t' u agreement of She Non York
Citv and Northern railroad bondholders, the
outcome of which is expected to benefit ihe
firmer stoek. Many of tile specialties wore
again prominent, first among v.hich was
wheeling aud Lake Erie. There was a spurt
m New England curly in the afternoon upon
renewed rumor* of consolidation, but none
other of the general list showod spuoiU fea
ture. The opening was strong at aovitnoe*
ranging up to 24£ per cent. There wits nn
active trading with Reading and Ornaiis,
un i me most prominent stocks, and while
tho latter wits consp cuously strong, the gen
eral list yielded fractional amounts. Later
Jersey Central and Wheeling and Lake Erie
became strong and the general man.el re
sponded. early losses being recovered befoio
noon. A buoyant lone marked the dealings
iu tho afternoon, aud New England. Louis
ville and Sashville and Norfolk and Western
preferred joining the strong nnd active
gfo ‘kr. There was agaiu a fractional reaction,
hut the ni Tket o osed about steady clow ’o
the opening figures. The active list, with
