TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF
FAMILIES.
DR. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that may
wish to know, by r any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx
iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme
North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting to
be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosuru
than for one to offer meal from the corn stalk, to
say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
| Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
profess to be, and will do for otheis what they
have done for such as mav have used them; as
this is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Yellow are just doubly as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of the hapatine, oi active principle, and when used
i as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
; system in much better condition than the other
| kind; many will recollect with what trembling
j anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
| how they then wished for a substitute. It has
| long been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late was it
ascertained that t iey contained alterative and diu
retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use
the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is Were it a patent mystery,
they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly do the one t housand and one cure-alls of the
day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in
this city. We all know something about this,

Radical Cure of Hernia or Rupture, by Dr.
Chase’s Improved Surgeons’ Trusses.
THE subscriber has opened an office, at the Dru<'
store of Messrs. J. J. Robertson &Co., for the
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
ustly celebrated instruments. He has now used
them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy forbid
he could name several persons who have been radi
cally cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fairway of being entirely re
lieved. The following is the languagl of the com
mittee of the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia,
“ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected
the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by those who wearother
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
other apparatus known to the committee.”
Ihe committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terras, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best known means of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southern Medical and
Southern Journal, published in our own city.
“ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to effect the object.”
Persor sfrom a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjusf
it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under
this afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certificate, from sorneresponsi
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, and applicable
to every variety of reducible rupture.

DR. E. SPOHN, a German physician of much
note, having devoted his attention for some
years to the cure and removal of the causes of NER
VOUS AND SICK HEAD ACHE, has the satis
faction to make known, that he has a remedy which
by removing the causes cures effectually and perma
nently this distressing complaint. There are many
families who have considered Sick Headache aeon
stitutional incurable family complaint- Dr. S. as
sures them that they are mistaken, and labouring
under distress which they might not only alleviate,
but actually eradicated by the use if his remedy.
It is the result of scientific research, and is entirely
of a different character from advertised patent medi
cines, and is not unpleasant to the taste.
HEADACHE, SICK OR NERVOUS.
The extraordinary reputation that Dr. Spohn’s
remedy for this distressing compaint is every day
gaining is certainly a matter ofmuch astonishment,
That so much suffering should have existed for ages
without any disco very of an effectual preventive, or
cure, is truly a subject of much regret but Dr. S.
now assures the public that such a remedy has been
invented as will convince the most credulous. The
principles on which it acts are simple and plain. It is
an acmitled fact that this complaint, whether called
Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim
arily from the stomach —those who think they have
the Nervous Headache may rest assured that this
organ, the stomach, is the first cause, that th“ sys
tem has become vitiated or debilitated, through the
stomach, and that only through jhe same channel
must they expects restoration of jhe natural and
healthy functions of the system. This object, Dr.
Spohn’s remedy is eminently calculated to attain.
The truth of this position cannot be controverted,
and the sooner sufferers with the headache become
convinced of it, the sooner will their suffering end
in restoration of health, Dr. Spohn pledges his
professionai reputation on this fact. The remedy
may be had of apothecaries generally throughout
the United States.

The French Pills are applicable in all cases, foi
either sex, (warranted free from Mercury,) and pos
sesses great advantages over the Balsams and all
liquid medicines, by being entirely free from smell,
and consequently do not effect the breath, thereby
preventing the possibility of discovery while using
them.
Besides this important advantage, they never
disagree with the stomach, and in the first stages of
the disease they usually effect a cure in a few' days,
with little regard to diet or exposure.
In the most obstinate stages of the disease, they
are equally certain, having cured many after every
other remedy hid failed. In short they have been
so universally successful that the proprietor chal
lenges any one to produce a remedy of equal cer
tainly, under a forfeiture of Three Hundred Dollars.

Dr. Valier—Dear Sir: About a month ago, I sent

Dr. Peters —Dear Sir, —By request of your agent,
Mr. Harrison, I send you a few lines respecting the
almost miraculous effects of your piPs; and I would
add, that you may make use ol them, in connection
with my name, in any manner you deem proper, 1
speak of their merits from experience's I and my
family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three
years ; and so great are the benefits we have receiv
ed from them in general, that I would rather pur
chase them at ten dollars a box than have my house
without them. I will not enumerate the afflictions
they have relieved us of; but I can assure you they
were many, and of very opposite natures, which -
has fully proved to me that your medicine is a sim
ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally
the enemy of every disease. I will mention one
case. I have a sister who had been for a long pe
riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and
was brought by it to the very verge of the gra\ e.
She was attended by the most eminent physicians
that money could procure; but all their efforts to
restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer
ings were fruitless ; and accordingly,we all consid
ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good
fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex
pecting every day to be her last, your pills were
introduced into my family, and so speedy and pal
pable were their effects that three doses visibly re
lieved her, and in less than three months she was
perfectly restored to health. This case, I and all
who were witness of it, (but more especially the
suffering party,) considered to be the next thing to
miraculous; and yet I could mention many more
of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills
were equally successful in rescuing the patients
from the jaws of death. Need I add that the popu
larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in
this section of the country ? But this I presume
you know from the immense quantity you dispose
of. I may mention, however, that notwithstanding
its general use, I never heard an individual complain
of its effects. My residence is 12 miles from Ral
eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. I am, with sen
timents of regard, your ob’t servant.
A. G. BANKS.
To Dr. Peters, —Sir —For upwards of fifteen
months, I have been cruelly afflicted with Fever
and Ague; and during the time could find nothing —
though I had applied to every thing that gave me
any thing like permanent relief. At length, how
ever, j-our pills were recommended to me, by one
of our best phj sicians, and I am most grateful and
happy in being able to add, that I had scarcely used
two boxes when I found that they had restored me
to perfect health. Since then, various members of
my family have used them with equal success —
and consequently I feel it my duty to apprise you
of the fact, and to request of you to publish this
certificate, as lam anxious to add my public testi

Communication received from the eminent Dr. J.
H. Irwin of Florence, Georgia:
Dr. J. P. Peters —My Dear Sir —On the night of
the 11th inst., I was called in great haste to the
house of a fellow citizen, (Mr, Lee,) where I found
his son laboring under a most alarming attack of
Cynanche Tracnealis (Cronp) and apparently be
yond the aid of remedy. By the greatest good for
tune, however, I had in my pocket a broken box of
your pills—four of which I administered, with
such immediate happy effect that in a few minutes
my patient was at ease, and out of danger. This
case, in connection with my name is at your ser
vice—and I have the pleasure to be able to inform
you that your inestimable medicine is in such great
favor with the faculty here, that I believe there is
not one of them who does not use it in his private
practice. Yours most resp’y.

FHIHE great celebrityof this unrivalled Compo

the proprietor but little need to say any thing in its
favor: for it has been generally conceded to it, that
it is beyond all comparison the best remedy for ex
ternal complaints that has ever been discovered.
Indeed the;speed and certainty of its operations,
have the appearance of miracles : as ulcers, wonuds,
corns,fever sores,chilblains, while swellings, biles,
piles, spider and snake bites, &c. &c., immediately
vield’to its superhuman influence. Thus, it prop

break and heal a bile in live days, will allay and
perfectly cure an ulcer in two weeks, and the most
desperate casesol white swelling that can be ima
gined, have been destroyed by it in less than two
months. In the bites of poisonous reptiles its effi
cacy is truly surprising, and if applied in time, its
powers of attraction are so wonderful that jhey will
at once arrest the poison and thus prevent it from
pervading the system. It is likewise greatly supe
rior to any medicine heretofore discovered for the
chafed back and limbs of horses - —for tetters, ring
worms, chapped lips—-and in short, for every exter

To Dr. Harrison.
Sir—l use your Specific Ointment in my practice,
and cordially recommend it as a most efficient reme

Rheumatic Fains, Chapped Face, Lips and Hands:
and for general external complaints. 1 write this

Brooklyn, N. Y., Oct. 29, 1838.
Dear Sir—My daughter,a girl of fourteen, was
sadly afflicted with the comp aim that physicians
termed a scald head ; and I feared, independent v f
every other evil, that she would be bald in conse
quence. By the recommendation, however, of the
Reverend Mr. Perrin, I applied your ointment to the
afflicted part; and I thank God that my child is
now entirely recovered from the disease, and is
getting her hair os fast as can be expected. The
cure was effected in lather less than two months;
during which lime I used fiv dollars worth of oint
ment; I had spent upwards of a hundred dollars
duiing the previous three years, without any benefit
whatever.
MARY HOWARD.
I hereby substantiate the truth ot the above
statement.

Dear Sir—l have to request of you to forward
me, two hundred boxes of Ointment, by the most
immediate conveyance, and without regard to the
expense of carriage, as lam quite out, and much
in want of it.—You know my estimation of your
valuable discovery, and therefore I shall only add,
that further experience has increased my enthusi

Respectfully yours,
CHARLES P. EMERSON, M. D.
New Orleans, March 20th, 1838.
Dr. Harrison.
Sir—The virtues of your Specific Ointment, have
been long known to me, as 1 have used none other
in my rather extensive practice lor several years, and
if you think it would be to your advantage, I can
furnish you with twenty certificates ot important
cures which it has effected under my own imme
diate inspection: the last being one of a severe
and apparently perpetual ulcer, in the back of a
poor woman, Mary Baxter who resides in 216 Di
vision street, which it completely healed in twenty
one days. My present chief object in w riting to
you, is to learn who is your authorised agent in this
city, for, being in want of a supply of your oint
ment, and the person Mr. Boyle, from whom I used
to purchase it, having failed and gone out of busi
ness, I am fearful if Ipurchaseat random, that I
may be imposed on by a counterfeit.
Your obedient servant,
EDWARD RAMSEY, M. D.
Cincinnati, August 9,1837.
Dr. Harrison.
Sir,—l have no hesitation in stating, in reply to
your note, that your “ Specific Ointment” is truly
equal to the majority of the ends for which vou re
commend it. I qualify my certificate by the word
majority, as it is my maxim to give no opinion in
medical matters where I have had no experience.
In sprains, bruises, inflammations, eruptions, whit
lows, piles, &c., it is my universal recipe. I have
also used it on the leg of a boy which had been
bitten by an adder, and the extraction of the poison,
and ultimate cure was so rapid, that my patient was
as well as ever in a week ; and has remained so to
this day.
Yours respectfully,
HENRY JACOBS, M. D.
