MILKS’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and J does not belong to the family' of quack medicines; for tb? reason that the component parts are made ! known to the faculty, or any one else that naay r wish to know, by' any r ofthe agents keeping them for sale. Since this discovery' so long and anx iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting to be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosuru 1 than for one to offer meal from the corn stalk, to ! saynothingof the difficulty-of raising the Tomato so far North. Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg ed to prove by r their use, that they r all that they profess to be, and will, do for otheis what they have done for such as mav have used them ; as this is a vegetable of gieat use, and value, it will doubtless be valuable information to families to know that the Yellow are just doubly as valuable as the Red Tomato, ard produces twice as much of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used ' as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the system in much better condition than the other kind; many' will recollect with tvhat trembling anxiety calomel has been given to children, and how they then wished for a substitute. It has long been known that the Tomato contained ca thartic principles, but not until of late was it ascertained that they' contained alterative and diu retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that they knoyf what it is Were it a patent mystery, they wouMJie bound to reject the medicine, as they justly do uie one thousand and one cure-alls of the day. If you wish to c ieanse the system with a mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato Pill, of which a supply , we learn, will soon be in this city. We all know something about this. The extraordinary reputation that Dr. Spohn’s remedy for this distressing compaint is every day gaining is certainly a matter of much astonishment. That so m ich suffering should have existed for ages without any discovery of an effectual preventive, or cure, is truly a subject of much regret but Dr. S. now assures the public that such a remedy has been invented as will convince the moat credulous. The principles on which it acts are simple and plain. It is an a mined fact that this complaint, whether called Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim arily from the stomach—those who think they have the Nervous Headache may rest assured that this organ, the stomach, is the first cause, that th a sys tem has become vitiated or debilitated, through the stomach, and that only through the same channel must they expects restoration of the natural and healthy functions of the system. This object, Dr. > Spohn’s remedy is eminently calculated to attain. The truth of this position cannot be controverted, and the sooner sufferers with the headache become convinced of it, the sooner will their suffering end in restoration of health, Dr. Spohn pledges his professionai reputation on this fact, The remedy may be had of apothecaries generally throughout the United States. The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by a highly respectable Planter of Wake County, No Ca.,March 3d, 1838: Dr. Peters—Dear Sir,—By requestof your agent, Mr. Harrison, I send you a few lines respecting the almost miraculous effects of your piPs; and I would add, that you may make use ol them, in connection with my name, in any manner you deem proper, I speak of their merits from experience, as 1 and my family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three years ; and so great are the benefits we have receiv ed from them in general, that I would rather pur chase them at ten dollars abox than have my house without them. I will not enumerate the afflictions they have relieved us of; but I can assure you they were many, and of very opposite natures, which has fully proved to me that your medicine is a sim ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally the enemy of every disease. I will mention onei case. I have a sister who had been for a long pe riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and was brought by it to the very verge of the grave. She was attended by the most eminent physicians that money could procure; but all their efforts to restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer ings were fruitless ; and accordingly,we all consid ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex pecting every day to be her last, your pills were introduced into my family, and so speedy and pal pable were their effects that three doses visibly re lieved her, and in less than three months she was perfectly restored to health. This case, I and all who were witness of it, (but more especially the suffering party,) considered to be the next thing to miraculous; and yet I could mention many more of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills were equally successful in rescuing the patients from the jaws of death. Need I add that the popu larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in this section of the country ? But this I presume you know from the immense quantity you dispose of, I may mention, however, that notwithstanding its general use, I never heard an individual complain of its effects. My residence is 12 miles from Ral eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. I am, with sen timents of regard, your ob’t servant. A. G. BANKS. To Dr. Peters, —Sir —For upward* of fifteen months, I have been cruelly afflicted with Fever and Ague 5 and during the time could find nothing— though I had applied to every thing that gave me any thing like permanent relief. At length, how ever, your pills were recommended to me, by one of our best physicians, and 1 am most grateful and happy in being able to add, that I had scarcely used two boxes when I found that they had restored me to perfect health. Since then, various members of my family have used them with equal success — and consequently* I feel it my duty to apprise y*ou of the fact, and to request of you to publish this certificate, as I am anxious to add my public testi mony to the almost miraculous virtues of your un rivalled medicine. Respectfully yours, THEODORE JAMES. Augusta, Ga., Feb 10, 1539. Communication received from the eminent Dr. J. H. Irwin of Florence, Georgia: Dr. J. P. Peters —My Dear Sir—On the night of the llthinst.,l was called in great haste to the house of a fellow citizen, (Mr. Lee,) where I found his son laboring under a most alarming attack of Cynanche Tracnealis (Croup) and apparently be yond the aid of remedy. By the greatest good for tune, however, I had in my pocket a broken box of y*our pills—four of which I administered, with such immediate happy effect that in a few minutes my patient was at ease, and out of danger. This case, in connection with my name is at your ser vice—and I have the pleasure to be able to inform you that your inestimable medicine is in such great favor with the faculty here, that I believe there is not one of them who does not use it in his private practice. Yours most resp’y. March 13, 1839. J. H. IRWIN, M. D. Extract from a letter written by Dr. Francis Bo gart, of Providence, R. 1., Dec. 17, 1838.—Peters’ pills are an excellent aperient and cathartic medi cine, those effects being produced by the differences of the quantity taken, and are decidedly superior to Lee’s, Brandreth’s or Morrison’s Pills. Extract from a letter by Dr. Hopson of Bangor, Me , Jan. 9, 1839. They are a peculiarly mild, yet efficient purgative medicine, and produce little, if any, griping or nausea. I have prescribed them with much success in sick headache and slight bil lions fever. June 3 THE great celebrity of this unrivalled Compo sition, especially in.the Northern States, leaves the proprietor but little need to say any thing in its favor: for it has been generally conceded to it,that it is beyond all comparison the best remedy lor cx ternaJeomplaints that has ever been discovered. Indeed the’speed and certainty ol its operations, have the appearance of miracles : as ulcers, wonuds, corns, fever sores, chilblains, white swellings, biles, piles, spider and snake bites, <fec. &c., immediately yield to its superhuman influence. Thus.il prop erly applied it will remove an inveterate corn or break and heal a bile in five days, will allay and perfectly cure an ulcer m two weeks, and the most desperate cases of white swelling that can be ima gined, have been destroyed by it in less than two mouths. In the bites of poisonous reptiles its effi cacy is infiy surprising, and if applied in time, its powers of attraction are so wonderful that they will at once arrest the poison and thus prevent it from pervading the system. It is likewise greatly supe rior to any medicine heretofore discovered for the chafed back and limbs of horses —for tetters, ring worms, chapped lips—and in short, for every exter nal bodily evil that may fall to the lot of man or beast. The proprietor has received at least a thousand certificates, and other documents, in favor of his “ Specific Ointm nt,” upwards of a hundred of which were written by respectable members of the Medical Faculty. Albany, July 9ih, 1837. To Dr. Harrison, i Sir—l useyour Specific Ointment in my practice, and cordially recommend it as a most efficient reme dy for Tumors, Ulcers, While Swellings, Scrofula, Rheumatic Pains, Chapped Face, Lips and Hands: and for general external complamfs. I write this al the request of your agent here, w-ho furnishes me with the article, and am pleased to have it in my pow-er to award honor to merit. RUFUS R. BEACH, M. D. •Brooklyn, N. Y., Oct. 29, 1838. Dear Sir—My daughter,a girl of lourietn, was sadly afflicted witn the comp aim that physicians termed a scald head ; and I feared, independent of every other evil, that she would be bald in conse quence. By the recommendation, however, of the Reverend Mr. Perrin, I applied your ointment to the afflicted part; and I thank God that my child is now entirely recovered from the disease, and is getting her hair as fast as can be expected The cure was effected in rather less than tw r o months; during which lime I used fiv dollars worth of oint ment; I had spent upwards of a hundred dollars dming the previous three years, without any benefi t whatever. MARY HOWARD. I hereby substantiate the truth ol the above statement. CHRISTOPHER HOWARD. 1 know the above statement to be coircct, and I can add from experience that “ Harrison’s Specific- Ointment,” is an excellent medicine for external complaints. MATTHEW PERRIN. Boston, Jan. 7, 1837. Dear Sir—l have to request of yon to forward me,two hundred boxes of Ointment, by the most immediate conveyance, and without regard to the . expense of carriage, as lam quite out, and much in want of it.—You know-my estimation of your valuable discovery, and therefore I shall only add, that further experience has increased my enthusi asm and established me in the opinion, that it is su - perior to any remedy extant for external diseases. Respectfully yours, CHARLES P. EMERSON, M. D. New Orleans, Match 20th, 1838. Dr. Harrison. Sir—The virtues of your Specific Ointment, have been long known to me, as I have used none other in my rather extensive practice for several years, and if you think it would be to your advantage, I can . furnish you with twenty certificates of important cures which it has effected under ray own imme diate inspection: the last being one of a severe ; and apparently perpetual ulcer, in the back of a ' 1 poor woman, Mary Baxter who resides in 216 Di vision street, which it completely healed in twenty onedays. My present chief object in writing to you, is to learn who is your authorised agent in this city, for, being in want of a supply of your oint ment, and the person Mr. Boyle, from whom I used repurchase it, having failed and gone out of busi ness,! am fearful if I purchase at random, that I may be imposed on by a counterfeit. Your obedient servant, EDWARD RAMSEY, M. D. ; Cincinnati, August 9,1837. Dr. Harrison. Sir, —1 have no hesitation in stating, in reply to your note, that your “ Specific Ointment” is truly equal to the majority ol the ends for which you re commend it. 1 qualify my certificate by the word majority, as it is my maxim to give no opinion in medical matters where 1 have had no experience. In sprains, bruises, inflammations, eruptions, whit lows, piles, &c., it is nw universal recipe. I have also used it on the leg of a boy which had been bitten by an adder, and the extraction of the poison, and ultimate cure was so rapid, that my patient was as well as ever in a week ; and has remained so to this day. Yours respectfully, HENRY JACOBS. 31. D. Extract of a letter from Dr. J. W.
