GALLIGHAN’S VEGETABLE
FEVER AND AGUE FILLS.
A certain and lasting care for that disease.
THE subscribers having been appointed special
agents for the sale of Gallighau’s Fever and
Ague Pills, is prepared to famish planters and
country traders with supplies of said article on
terms equally as favorable as they can be obtained
of the proprietors
Gallighan’s Pills, though useful for all diseases
which originate in a superabundant collection of
bile in the stomach, arc more particularly intended
for Fever and Ague. In the first place they cleanse,
strengthen and give tone to the stomach and bow
els, and create a new and healthy action through
out the system. They produce a natursl and per
manent appetite; they defend the system against
new or subsequent attacks of the disease; they
assist the various operations of nature by cleansing
the system of all vitiated, corrupt and acrid humors,
and thus invigorate and reanimate the whole frame.
Possessing a purgative quality, they cannot remain
in the boVels to produce such other diseases as
often follow the injudicious treatment of the fever
and ague. They are composed entirely of vegeta
ble matter, and may be taken ty persons of both
se«s and of all ages, without the least danger of
unpleasant consequences. In fine, the public are
assured that Gallighan’s pills possess those inesti
mable virtues, which are requisite not only to ar
rest, but to eradicate and destroy .he last seeds of
this most distressing malady of the human family.
The proprietors solemnly pledge themselves that
they do not contain a particle of minerals in any
shape or form, but are composed entirely of simple
vegetable substances, which either separately or
combined, and without regard to sex or age, are
perfectly harmless in their effects ujjon the human
system.

Radical Cure oi'Hernia or Rupture, by Dr.
Chase’s Improved Surgeons’ Trusses.
riNHE subscriber has opened an office, at the Drug
j store of Messrs. J. J- Robertson & Co., for the
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
ustly celebrated instruments. He has now used
them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy forbid,
he could name several persons who have been radi
cally cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fairway of being entirely re
lieved. The following is the language of the com
mittee oi the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia.
“ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected
the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by those who wearother
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
other apparatus known to the committee.’'
“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terms, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best known nteans of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southe. :i Medical and
Southern Journal, published in our own city.
“ Ail must admit of the radical cure of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to effect the object.”
Persons from a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office., and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjus
it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under
this afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certificate, from
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, a*id applicable
to everv variety of reducible rupture,

TO THE FACULTY ANDHEADS OF
FAMILIES.
DR. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that may
wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so Ic’ng and anx
iously looked for, some one in almost the extreme
North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting to
be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosutu
than for one to offer meal from the com stalk, to
say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the gre-.it benefits of
which, he holds himself bound, ami ij honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
profess to be, and will do for otbcis what they
have done for such as mav have used them ; as
is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Yellow are just doubly as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produce s I V ice as much
of the hapatine, or active principle, apid when used
as a daily vegetable will be foum:} co keep the
system in much better condition than the other
kind; many will recollect with trembling
anxiety calomel has been given to and
how they then wished for a subst tute. It has
long been known that the Tomato icontained ca
thartic principles, but not until oP late was it
ascertained that they contained alterative and diu
retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use
the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is Were it a patent mystery,
they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
day. If you wish to cleanse the system witli a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in
this city. We all know something about this,

RHEUMATISM.
CtOIIEN’S RHEUMATIC EMBROCATION.—
J Dr. M. B. Cohen, proprietor of the universally
celebrated lotion for the cure of Chronic and Infla
matory Rheumatism. Sprains, Lumbago, Pains and
Swellings in the Joints, &c., known as Cohen’s
Rheumatic Embrocation, begs respectfully to refer
all persons suffering from these diseases to the
thousands of cures that his preparation has accom
plished, and to the numerous strange and highly
respectable testimonials which have, from lime to
time, been published to that effect in New York
and other places. So certain and searching is this
Liniment in its operations, even in cases of long
standing, and of an obstinate nature, that it has
never been known to fail. The following letters
are selected from hundreds of others of a like de
scription. It will be proper that all persons using
he Liniment, see that it is accompanied with the
signature of the proprietor in his own hand writing.
Since the introduction of this remedy to the public,
various empirics have been palmed upon the coun
try, Nostrums and Lotions, and Liniments, and
“Infallible Rheumatic Mixtures,” all of which be
ing a compound of ignorant quacks, are calculated,
more or less, to injure the system rather than re
move any complaint. In proof of the estimation
in which the Embrocation is held by respectable
men in the medical profession, as well as by the
thousands of persons who have been effectuady
cured of Rheumatism, the subscriber has subjoined
letters from a few who are well and popularly
known to the entire society in New York, and
whose opinions and professional judgments are
universally esteemed.

ANTi-BALSAMIC GONOREHCEAL SOLUTION,
| Warranted to cure in Five Days.
rriHIS incomparable and invaluable remedy so
JL long known, and used with such unparralleled
success in the Canadas for the last 30 ycais, ap
, pears to need no panegyric. Its operation upon the
human system is such that it invariably acts like
a charm, for the relief and radical cure of a certain
. common and disagreeable “ills the flesh is heir to.”
This prize obtains its own name from the certain
' success which has attended it through all of its
trying circumstances, namely, “five days,”—the
1 same success which followed it in a Northern lati
tude still obtains in a more Southern. The formula
. or recipe was obtained at great expense, intrigue
and hazard by M. Cheveres, from the celebrated
Indian Chief Wabenothe, or Great Moon, whilst
he, with others was pursuing the lucrative Fur bu
i siness in the North-west with the Indians.—
Wabenoshe prized highly and use it with invariable
\ success throughout his two tribes. Its known and
t valued virtues have already enriched to an almost
incredible extent the children of this warlike prince,
not only by actual sale of the article itself to in
dividuals, but by parting with copies of his receipt
at enormous prices to the Chief of every tribe of
Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the
Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com
position until he sleeps with his fathers,” although
free to use it in their respective tribes, which
places it in the hands of every Indian who rely
with, I may say, religious confidence on its cura
ble powers.
Below is a copy of the translation as near as it can
be anglisized of the deed given by Wabenoshe, to
M. Che veret, when he purchased the original recipe,
and had twice assisted the Chief himself through
the tedious manipulatory process of manufacture.
Few white men would credit the length of time
which is consumed in preparing the article for im
mediate use.

The most peculiar virtue of the “Cinq Jours,”

O. COSBY'S DYSPEPTIC HITTJEKS.
PERHAPS there is nothing mo” calculated to
disgust the public eye than the innumerable
advertisements of nostrums that are constantly ap
pearing in the public prints. AH are ready to ex
claim, our souls are sick, our ears are pained with
every day’s reports of ills and specifics. This state
of the public mind would seem to forbid any person
of delicate mind from sending forth any new dis
coveries in medicine, to the trial of the public.—
Still, motives of delicacy should not prevent us from
making known real discoveries, which we are con
fident will benefit our fellow men. Tins latter
consideration has prompted the author of these hit
ters to make them known. He knows they are high
ly efficacious, for he himself, his wife, and many
friends, have given them a thorough trial. He was
himself a confirmed dyspeptic, so much, that even
his recollection was gone. By using these bitters
he has been restored to health. Mrs. Cosby was
troubled for many years, but was restored to health
by the use of these bitters. This has been the case
with many of his frif nds. Mr. Cosby in sending
forth this advertisement, addresses those who know
him. Ho has been for many years a resident of
Augusta, at which place he can at any time be
consulted about Urn bitters. They are good in all
cases of diseases of the digestive organs, the symp

The French Pills are applicable in all cases, sot

sesses great advantages over the Balsams and all
liquid medicines, by being entirely free from smell,
and consequently do not effect the breath, thereby
preventing the possibility of discovery while using
them.
Besides this important advantage, they never
disagree with the stomach, and in the first stages of
the disease they usually effect a cure in a few' days,
wit h little regard to oiet or exposure.
In the most obstinate stages of the disease, they
are equally certain, having cured many after every
other remedy had failed. In short they have been
so universally successful that the propriety chal

DR. E. SPOHN, a German physician of much
noie.navmg deyoteo ms attention lor some
years to tne cure and removal of the c* uses of N ER
VOUS AND SICK HEAD ACHE, has the satis
faction to make known, that he has a remedy w hich
by removing the causes cures effectually and perma
nently this distressing complaint. There are many
families who have considered Sick Headache a con
stitutional incurable family complaint* Dr. S. as
sures them that they are mistaken, and labouring
under distress w'hich tney might not only alleviate,
but actually eradicated by the use >f his remedy.
It is the result of scientific research, and is entirely
of a different character from advertised patent medi
cines, and is not unpleasant to the taste.
HEADACHE, SICK OR NERVOUS.
The extraordinary reputation that Dr. Spohn’s
remedy for this distressing compaint is every day
gaining is certainly a matter of’much astonishment.
That so much suffering should have existed for ages
without any discovery of an effectual preventive, or
cure, is truly a subject of much regret hut Dr. S.
now assures the public that such a remedy has been
invented as will convince the most credulous. The
principles on which it acts are simple and plain. It is
an a; milled fact that this complaint, w hether called
Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim
arily from the stomach—those who think they have
the Nervous Headache may rest assured that this
organ, the stomach, is the first cause, that th** sys
tem has become vitiated or debilitated, through the
stomach, and that only through the same channel
must, they expects restoration of the natural and
healthy functions of the system. This object. Dr.
Spohn’s remedy is eminently calculated to attain.
The truth of this position cannot be controverted,
and the sooner sufferers with the headache become
convinced of it, the sooner will their suffering end
in restoration of health. Dr. Spohn pledges his
professional reputation on this fact. Tive remedy
may be had of apothecaries generally throughout
the United States.

THE great celebrity of this unrivalled Compo
sition, especially in.the Northern States, leaves
the proprietor but little need to say any thing in its
favor: for it has been generally conceded to it, that
it is beyond all comparison the best remedy for ex
ternal complaints that has ever been discovered.
Indeed thejspeed and certainty of its operations,
have the appearance of miracles : as ulcers, wouuds,
corns,fever sores,chilblains, white swellings, biles,
piles, spider and snake bites, &c. &c., immediately
yield to its superhuman influence. Thus, it prop
erly applied it will remove an inveterate corn or
break and heal a bile in five days, w ill allay and
perfectly cure an ulcer m two weeks, and the most
desperate cases of white swelling that can be ima
j gin ed,have been destroyed by it in less than two
months. Inihe bites of poisonous reptiles its effi
cacy is truly surprising, and if applied in time, its
powers of attraction are so wonderful that they will
at once arrest the poison and thus prevent it from
pervading the system. It is likewise greatly supe
rior to any medicine heretofore discovered for the
chafed back and limbs of horses—for tellers, ring
worms, chapped lips—and in short, for every exter
nal bodily evil that may fall to the lot of man or
beast.
The proprietor has received at least a thousand
certificates, and other documents, in favor of his
“ Specific Ointment,” upwards of a hundred of
which were written by respectable members of the

during the previous three years, without any benefit
whatever.

I hereby substantiate the truth ot the above
statement.

MATTHEW PERRIN.

Dear Sir—l have to request of you to forward
me, two hundred boxes of Ointment, by* the most
immediate conveyance, and w ithout regard to the
expense of carriage, as lam quite out, and much
in want of it.—You know ray estimation of your
valuable discovery, and therefore I shall only add,
mat further experience has increased my enthusi
asm and established me in the opinion, that it is su -
perior to any remedy extant for external diseases.
Respectfully yours,

New Orleans, March 20th, 1838
Dr. Harrison.
Sir—The virtues of your Specific Ointment, have
been long known to me, as I have used none other
in my rather extensive practice forseveral years, and
if you think it would be to your advantage, I can
furnish you with twenty certificates of important
cures which it has effected under my own imme
diate inspection: the last being one of a severe
and apparently perpetual ulcer,in the hack of a
pqw woman, Mary Baxter who resides in 216 Di
vision street, which it completely healed in twenty
one days. My present chief object in writing to
you, is to learn who is your authorised agent in this
city, for, being in want of a supply of your oint
ment, and the person Mr. Boyle, from whom I used
to purchase it, having failed and gone out of busi
ness, I am fearful if I purchase at random, that I
may be imposed on by a counterfeit.
Your obedient servant,
EDWARD RAMSEY, M. D.
Cincinnati, August 9,1837.
Dr. Harrison.
Sir, —I have no hesitation in stating, in reply to
your note, that your “ Specific Ointment” is truly
equal to the majority of the ends for which you re
commend it. I qualify my certificate by the word
majority, as it is my maxim to give no opinion in
medical matters where 1 have had no experience.
In sprains, bruises, inflammations, eruptions, whit
lows, piles, &c., it is mv universal recipe. I have
also used it on the leg of a boy which had been
bitten by an adder, and the extraction of the poison,
and ultimate cure was so rapid, that my patient was*
as well as ever in a week ; and has remained so to
this day
Yours respectfully,

I am prepared to say, that for Rheumatic Pains,

“ Harrison’s Specific Ointment” is, in ray opinion
a most important discovery ; and is particularly effil

general outward complaints. I speak of its merits

The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by' a

Ca.,March 3d.1838:
Dr. Peters—Dear Sir, —By' request of your agent,
Mr. Harrison, I send you a few lines respecting the
almost miraculous effects of your piPs ; and I would
add, that you may make use oi them, in connection
with my name, in any manner you deem pro|ier, I
speak of their merits from experience,as 1 and my
family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three
. years ; and so great are the benefits we have rcceiv
! ed from them in general, that I would rather pur
i chase them at ten dollars a box than have my house
t without them. 1 will not enumerate the afflictions
they have relieved us of; but I can assure you they
were many, and of very opposite natures, which
, has fully' proved to me that your medicine is a sim
> pie purifier of the system, and therefore equally
i the enemy of every disease. I will mention one
case. 1 have a sister who had been for a long pe
riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and
was brought by it to the very verge of the grate.
She was attended bv the most eminent physicians
that money could procure; but all their efforts to
restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer
ings were fruitless ; and accordingly,we all consid
ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good
j fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex
-1 peeling every day to be her last, your pills were
introduced into my'family, and so speedy and pal
’ pable were their effects that three doses visibly re
lieved her, and in less than three months she was
perfectly restored 1o health. This case, I and all
who were witness of it, (but more especially' the
suffering party,) considered to be the next tiling to
miraculous; and yet I could mention many more
of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills
f were equally successful in rescuing the patients
i from the jaws of death. Need I add"that the popu
larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in
this section of the country ? But this 1 presume
you know from the immense quantity' you dispose
of. I may mention, however, that notwithstanding
1 its general use, 1 never heard an individual complain
of its effects. My'residence is 12 miles fronq Ral
-1 eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. 1 am, with sen
timents of regard, your ob’t servant.
A. G. BANKS.
To Dr. Peters, —Sir—For upward s of fifteen
months, 1 have been cruelly' afflicted with Fever
and Ague; and during the time could find nothing—
though 1 had applied to every thing that gave me
any thing like permanent relief. At length, how
ever, your pills were recommended to me, by one
of our best physicians, and I am most grateful and
happy in being able to add that 1 had scarcely used
two boxes when I found that they' had restored me
to perfect health. Since then, various members of
my family have used them with equal success —
and consequently' 1 feel it my duty to apprise you
of the fact, and to request of y r ou to publish this
certificate, as lam anxious to add my' public testi
mony to the almost miraculous virtues of your un
rivalled medicine. Respectfully yours,

Dr. J. P. Peters —My Dear Sir—On the night of
the 11th inst., I was called in great haste to the
house of a fellow ciiizen, (Mr, Lee,) where I found
his son laboring under a most alarming attack of
Cynanche Tracnealis (CTonp) and apparently' be
yond the aid of remedy. By the greatest good for
tune, however, I had in my pocket a broken box of
your pills—four of which 1 administered, with
such immediate happy ellbct that in a. few minutes
my patient was at ease, and out of danger. This
case,in connection with my name is at y'our ser

you that your inestimable medicine is in such great

LE CORDIAL DE LIJCIJSE.
OU L’ELIXIK DE L’AMOUR.
rjIITE subscriber has the pleasured announcing
JL to the citizens of the U. Slates, that he has
purchased, fora very large sum ami from the in
ventor, Ihe celebrated Dr. Magnin, of Paris lug
recipe ard right for making this astonishing medi
cine. Until the appearance of the “ Lucina Cor
dial,'’ (about three years since,) it was thought that
the complaints, which it speedily overcomes, were
beyond the reach of human remedy, as for upwards
of a thousand yiars, they had baffled the wisdom
and ingenuity of the most profound physicians in
all pans ol the world. This Cordial, however, to
the great advantage of the human race, soon proved
itself to he the desideratum so long sought for; and
accordingly, notwithstanding the brief period of its
existence, it has required a celebrity so great, that
it Is eagerly inquired for throughout the civilized
globe. Dr. Magnin soon finding that the demand
was f-o vast as io render a supply impossible, dis
posed of the recipe and right oi sale, under obliga
tions of secrecy, f*r England, the United Stairs,
and other countries, only preserving France and
Italy for himself. Thus has the subscriber pos
sessed himself of the invaluable secret; and now
hastens logivelhe inhabitants of his line of agents,
the benefits of his speculation.
“Le Cordial De Lucine,” or, in English, “the
Lucina Cordial,” is a general invigorator of the
human frame! In all The various cases of languor,
lassitude, and debilitation ; it is an unfailing reme
dy ; as it is equally its province to impart cheerful,
ness and decision to the mind, as health and vigor
to the body. But the peculiar virtue on which its
celebrity is based, is the facility and certainry with
which it restores the virile powers when they have
been destroyed by disease, time, recklessness, orany
of the numerous causes w hich terminate in the
prostration of those functions.
In common with the generality of really good
medicines, this Cordial contains nothing of a mer
curial or deleterious nature, among the many ingre
dients which compose it; butis, at ihe same time,
so simple, yet so efficacious, that while it can reno
vate the prostrated energies of a giant, an mfan
raay use it,not only with impunity, hut with ad
vantage.
The usages of society are unfortunately such,
that, notwithstanding the benefits which would bo
sure to result from it, wc cannot enter into an analy
sis ol this inestimable Cordial here, or publish many
of the documents w hich have been received, as
vouchers of the blessings u has conferred on num
bers of despairing individuals. But this we cannot
forbear remarking—that it has been demonstrated
that there is scarcely ever, if any such thing at all,
as natural barrenness, or as natural imbecility of
the procreant functions, in either sex ; and therefore,
that those evils are the effects of artificial causes,
and may he speedily subdued and removed by the
use ot “ Le Cordial de Lucine.”
The Lucina Cordial is also an indubitable cure
for the Gleet, and the Fluor A Ibiis, obstructed, diffi
cult, or painful Menstruation ; also, for the incon
tinence ot Urine,or the involuntary discharge there
of. It is likewise an invaluable and unrivalled
medicine in cases of Chronic Eruptions of theskin,
and in the dropsical affections of the aged.
Most important to the American Public.
The United Stales proprietor of the celebrated
“ Lucina Cordial,” or “ Elixir of Love,” begs to lay
before the coramunit}', the following certificate,
w hich he has.received from the inventor, the illus
trious Dr. Magnin. of Paris :
“ This is to certify, that I have disposed of the
recipe for making the “ Lucina Cordial,” or
“ Elixir of Love,” and also the right to sell it
throughout the 1 nited Slates of North America,
to John Winters Holderwell.M. D. My reasons
for so doing is, that the demands to me for the above
Cordial, of which lam the inventor, are so nume
rous, that I am unable to supply all the orders from
France and Italy alone; and have therefore dispo
sed of the privileges vouchsafed in this, and oilier
certificates of a like nature in order to generalise
the benefits of my discovery throughout the vvorid.
Given under my hand et Paris, on this nineteenth
day of January, in the year of our Lord,

Respected and Honored SSir:—We have all in a
variety of cases, tested the remarkable effects ot
your great discovery, and have assembled for the
purpose of bearing evidence to the facts, and tend
ering you the honor which is your due. The
“Lucina Cordial” is in our opinion, an infallible
remedy for the prostration of the Procreant Func
lions, and Artificial Barrenness : and therefore must
prove a blessing to the human race. We ca; also
bear evidence (hat there is nothing in it of a mer
curial or deleterious nature ; and in short, tls it is

I am now on the wrong side of eighty, and yet 1
could be on my honor or oath if necessary, that a
hotlleortw'o of your Cordial of Love has made me

and that (pardon my officiousness,) you should have
named it accordingly.
From the eminent Dr. Devigney, of Brussels
October 3, 1537.
To Dr. Magnin:—My dear friend—l am raos
gratified at the unprecedented popularity of your
“Lucina Cordial,” and am able to hear testimony to
its surprising virtue. 1 had a patient recently,
I >1 , a gentleman ol fortune, who had lor
several years abandtsned himself in the vortex oi
dissipation; and was only reclaimed from it at
length by the utter prostration of ail his virile ener
gies . lie was, indeed, reduced to the last exi remity
of debility and taslefessness, for, if an occasional
flash of excitement warmed his system, the reac
tion was almost immediate, and the result perlect
prostration. 1 had applied all the usual nostrums
in such cases ; but, as I had anticipated, without
success ; and when I saw the “ Lucina Cordial”
advertised, I must confess that even the great weight
of your name did not give me much hope in it, at
least so far as regarded the case in hand. I felt
bound to try it, however, and was soon satisfied of
its efficacy; for before a bottle was expended, ray
patient gave evidence of the returning elasticity ol
his system ; and he is now, having used four bellies,
as well is ever.
The number of documents, such as the above
which have been received by Mr. Magnin, since the
first appearance of “ Lo Cordial de Lucine.” would
fill a volume as large as the Bible.
