L’. S. Bank Marked Norik—The Phila delphia U. S. Gazette, of Tues! Ey siys —‘We understand that the marked nolj s of the I nited Slates Bank, which the late Act (\ the Legislature exonerates it from paying, (exc pt by the usual course of common law,) have 1 en returned to New i ork and thrown into t ■ market; this combined with the far! that ihe inks to the east ward of New York are drawing for the balances, has tended to increase the rail of exchange a gainst Philadelphia. \ From Ihe Act/' York Courier < Wednesday. Fire. ! Between 1 and 2 o’cloak this doming, another fire broke out. It commenced in the window sash factory in the rear of 81 Eldredge street, between Grand and Broome stn is, and extended to Mr. Stevens’ Loco Foco mail i factory in front from which it spread before il vas extinguished to the adjoining dwelling housi No- 91 occupied by Mr. Urane. While burning, the walls of 39 fell upon and crushed the next building. No 87, occupied by Mr. Hiler as a stair rod factory and we regret to add, that there is too much rcas i to be ieve, sev eral firemen at the time were i side i f it. Il is nearly circular, and about o c-tliinl of a mile in j diameter. It has no visible nlet. but its outlet is a never-failing stream of coi uderable magnitude. 1 The name is derived from it: appearance. View- j ed from a little distance, it sc rns of a milky white- j ness, except a few rods in tl ? centre, which by the cont rast appears per! ctl; black. The appear ance itself is singular enoti< i, but the cause is 1 stdl more remarkable. From tho centre or dark ortion or the lake at stated seasons, innumerable quantities of shells are thrown up. of various s es and forms, but all perfectly white. These flo; ’ > the shore, and ate thrown out upon thebe; h, or sink into .-hol low water.—Hundreds of I ishels ought be gath ered from the shore after or ■ of these periodical up-risings; and the wholes >il for several rods on every side of the lake is t imposed entirely of these shells, broken or deco iposed by the action of the weather, In the ce tre of the lake, bot tom has never been found, Ithough il has been sounded to the depth of *ral hundred feet. Where th.cn is the grant J epos ite from which has bet n welling up since he memory of man. these countless myriads f untenanted shells? Is it p issible that though ft remote and at an el evation of several hundred ,’eet above them, this bottomless well may, by s nc subterranean com munication be connected v til the grand shell mail deposite in the easton part of the Stale !
