A sudden blaze of joy seemed to run :|om heart to heart; the soldier clasped Gen. lllrrison in his arms, while the children pressed _ his hand with affection. We shall he saved from ruin criei ; the pole wife. The General found the owner of th piece of land on which the soldier lived, and ne er rested until he made the poor fellow a right ' p it. Thk Uses of Iron—lron Horsr.sf- In the course of Mr. Silver’s capital lecture on Ir> n, at the Franklin Institute, a few evenings since he designated a few of the various objects to which iron is applied. He enumerates -team and sailing ships, canal boats, rail road cars, carriages, fences, bridges, aqueducts, wale? wheels, pumps, architectural columns and ornaments, house fronts, mantels, chimneys, shutters, awning posts, picture frames, &c. In England, he s dd, large manufactories are built wholly of iron ; and for many, it has been partially used in this country. The buildings of the Philadelphia Gas Compa ny, are nearly all iron. Also, much of the lute new Hall of the Academy of Natural Sci ences. The basement of the house at the N. W. corner of.Sth and Cherry street, is of iron ; and any observer, he added, cannot fail to see, that for freshness and fineness, it eclipses the marble fronts around. The lower sections of the pillars of the portico of the Church, in Tentn and Filbert street, arc hollow cast iron. The beautiful front of the Miners liank at Potts ville, the steps, moulding, cornice and statuary, are of iron. The portable iron boats in winch merchand'ze is brought from the far-west, are of iron. An iron steamer is now floatir g in tri umph, on the Ohio; and the English ship Arch imedes, is of iron, in the Texan trade. He ex p essed a belief that before many years, iron hou ses would be advertised, and delivered |br occu pancy, at three months notice—and that houses so formed, to the value of m.llions j f dollars, would he exported from Pennsylvani to Tex as.the West Indies and South Anier’n i. S- ■ houses, he added, of assorted pattern;! are ad vertised at thistime in London, by a ’ornpany who engaged to put them up for coun ry seals, and att’ie very lowest rates. The lectur through out, was replete with facts—some of vcuch, we shall endeavor to obtain permission to make pub lic through our columns. —Phi lade fp la Ljui rer. Jf.u d’Esprit —ln a recet.t debate in ;ie House / of Representatives, Mr. Smith, of Maije, spoke with much self-complacency of his democracy, and that of his ancestry and connections, aiA alluded to the fact of having lost a brother at Lu fly’s iane daring the last war. % Mr. Morgan, of New York, one of thefy-oungest members of the House, at the a most spirited and eloquent reply, said, that Whenever our national honor dernar icd a resort la war, he trusted th t he should be found on the side of the country, right ur wrong; but ho would assure the gentleman ironi Maine of one thing, that {he would never come here to boast of bis ancesliH or con nections, or make it a matter of pride that he lost a brother, but saved himself ! A Senator, on hearing tiie reply, gave the fol lowing Impromptu, which was calculated to the amusement of ail parlies: “How s cep the brave” at Lundy’s lane ? The wag of the Baltimore Clipper thinks that Amos Kendall’s mails should join the temperance society, as they are very irregular in their habits. Until the mail arrived \ esterday, we thought it had joined a tec-total absence society.— Picayune. Another Snake Story. — A large horse, of a bay color, sixteen hands high, has recently been found in the eye of a snake in Arundel county, Md. The stirrups of the saddle with which he was bestrid, obtruded from the corner of tie rep tile’s optic, and it was thought at the last dates, that the entire animal would be got out, with time and patience, without difficulty.— Phil.
