Radical Cure olTleruia or Rupture, by Dr.
Chase’s Improved Surgeons’ Trusses.
fINHE subscriber has opened an office, at the Drug
§ store of iMessrs. J. J. Robertson it Co., for the
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by means of these
ustly celebrated instruments. He has now used
them for nearly a year, and, did not delicacy forbid,
he could name several persons who have been radi
cally cured, of this truly distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fairway of being entirely re
j lieved. The following is the language of the corn
i mittee ol the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
j Radical Cure of Hernia.
j “ The instruments of Dr. Chase have effected
; the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by the
i committee, without material inconvenience to the
I patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by those who wearothcr
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
other apparatus known to the committee.”
“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, in strong terms, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best known means of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southern Medical and
Southern Journal, published in our own city.
“ All must admit of the radical care of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to effect the object.”
Persons from a distance can hav*?the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given lo enable them to adjus
it themselves. The poor, who are laboring under
this afflicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly upon presenting a certificate, from someresponsl"
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, and applicable
to every variety of reducible rupture,

TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF
FAMILIES.
DR. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
dues not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that may
wish to know, by any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx
iously looked for, some one La almost the extreme
North has advertised a Tomato Pill, purporting to
be made from the stalk, a thing not more aosuiu
than for one to offer meal from the corn sUIk, to
say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. Miles, of Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he bolds himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
profess to be, and will do for otheis what they
have done for such as mav have u?ed them ; as
.his is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Y r ellow are just doubly as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of the hapatine, or active principle, and when used
as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
system in much better condition than the other
kind; many will recollect with what trembling
anxiety calomel has been given t» children, and
how they then wished for a substitute. It has
long been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late was it
ascertained that .aey contaiuea alterative and diu
retic properties. The Faculty embrace and use
the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is .Were it a patent mystery,
they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
day. If you wish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Pill, of which a supply, we learn, will soon be in
his city. We ali know something aoout uus.

This prize obtains its own name from the certain
1 success which has attended it through all of its
■ trying circumstances, namely, “five days,” —the
1 same success which followed it in a Northern lati

s valued virtues have already enriched to an almost
incredible extent the children of this warlike prince,
not only by actual sale of the article itself to in

J at enormous prices to the Chief of every tribe of
Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the
r Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com

free to use it in their respective tribes, which
! places it in the hands of every Indian who rely
with, 1 may say, religious confidence on its cura

Below is a copy of the translation as near as it can
be anglisized of the deed given by Wabenoshe, to

HEADACHE, SICK OR NERVOUS.
The extraordinary reputation that Dr, Spohn’s

gaining is certainly a matter olmueh astonishment,
That so m ich suffering should have existed fur ages
without any discovery of an effectual preventivs, or
cure, is truly a subject of much regret but Dr. 6.
now assures the public that such a remedy has been
1 invented as will convince the most credulous. The
principles on which it acts are simple and plain. It is
an admitted fact that this complaint, whether called
Sick Headache, or Nervous Headache, arises prim
arily from the stomach —those who think they have
the Nervous Headache may rest assured that this
organ, the stomach, is the first cause, that th* sys

stomach, and that only through the same channel

healthy function? ol the system. This object, Dr.
Spohn’s remedy is eminently calculated to aitam.
The truth of this position cannot be controverted,
and the sooner sufferers with the headache become
convinced of it, the sooner will their suffering end
in restoration of health. Dr. Spohn pledges his
professional reputation on this fact. Ttie remedy

To Dr. Harrison.
Sir—l nseyour Specific Ointment in my practice,
and cordially recommend it as a most efficient reme
dy - for Tumors, Ulcers, White Swellings, Scrofula,
Rheumatic Pains, Chapped Face, Lips and Hands:
and for general external complaints. I write this
at the request of your agent here, who furnishes me
w ith the article, and am pleased to have it in my
power to award honor to merit.
RUFUS K. BEACH, M. D.
Brooklyn, N. Y., Oct. 29, 1838.
Dear Sir—My daughter,a girl of fourteen, was
sadly afflicted witu the comp flint that physicians
termed a scald head ; and I feared, independent of
every other evil, that she would he bald in conse
quence. By the recommendation, however, of the
Reverend Mr. Perrin, I applied your ointment to the
afflicted part; and 1 thank Hod that my child is
now entirely recovered from the disease, and is
getting her hair as fast as can be expected. The
cure was effected in rather less than two months;
during whicn lime 1 used fiv dollars worth ofoinl
ment; I had spent upwards of a hundred dollars
during the previous lUree years, without any benefit
whatever. MARY HO WARD.
1 hereby substantiate the truth ot the above
statement CHRISTOPHER HOW ARD.
1 know the abo\e statement to be correct, and 1
can add from experience that “ Harrison’s Specific
Ointment,” is an excellent medicine for external

Dear Sir—l have to request of you to forward
me, two hundred boxes of Ointment, by the most
immediate conveyance, and wilhout regard to the
expense of carriage, as I am quite out, and much
in want of it. —You know my estimation of your
valuable discovery, and therefore I shall only add,
that further txperience has increased my enthusi

perior to any remedy extant for external diseases.
Respectfully yours,

Dr. Harrison.
Sir —The virtues of your Specific Ointment, have
been long known to me, as I have used none other
in my rather extensive practice for several years, and
if you think it would be to your advantage, I can
furnish you with twenty certificates of important
cures which it has effected under ray own imme
diate inspection : the last being one of a severe
and apparently perpetual ulcer,in the back of a
poor woman, Mary Baxter who resides in 21G Di
vision street, which it completely healed in twenty
one days. My present chief object in w riting to
you, is to learn who is your authorised agent in this
city, for, being ia want of a supply of your oint
ment, and the person Mr. Boyle, from whom 1 used
to purchase it, having failed and gone out of busi
ness, I am fearful if 1 purchase at random, that J
may be imposed on by a counterfeit.
Your obedient servant,
EDWARD RAMSEY, M. D.

Dr. Harrison.
Sir, —1 have no hesitation in stating, in reply to
your note, that your “ Specific Ointment” is truly
equal to the majority of the ends for which you re
commend it. 1 qualify ray certificate by tho word
majority, as it is my maxim to give no opinion in
medical matters where I have had uo experience,
in sprains,bruises, inflainmstions, eruptions, whit
lows, pilesj&c.,it is nav’ universal recipe. I have
also used it on the leg of a l»oy which had been
bitten by an adder, end the extraction of the poison,
and ultimate cure w as so rapid, that my patient was
as well as ever in a week ; and has remained so to
this day
Yours respectfully,

f | vHESE Pills are no longer among those of doubt-
I ful utility. They have passed away from the
hundreds that are daily launched upon the tide ol
experiment, and now stand before the public as
high in reputation, and as extensively employed in
all parts of the United States, the Canadas, Texas
Mexico, and the West Indies, as any medicine that
has ever been prepared for the relief of suffering
man. They have been introduced wherever it was
found possible to carry them ; and there are but
few towns that do not contain some remarkable
evidences of their good effects. The certificates
that have been presented to the propiictor exceed
twenty thousand! upwards of five hundred of
which are from regular practising physicians, who
are the most competent judges of their merits.
Often have the cures performed by this medicin
been the subject of editorial comment, in variou
newspapers and journals; and it may with truth he
asserted, that no medicine of the kini has ever re
ceived testimonials of greater value thin are at
tached to this.
They are in general use as a family medicine
and there aro t thousands of families who declare they
' re never satisfied until they have a supply always
on hand.
They have no rival in curing and preventing
Billious Fevers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver
Complaints, Sick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma,
Dropsy, Rheumatism, Enlargement of the Spleen,
Piles, Cholic, Female Obstructions, Heartburn,
Furred Tongue, Nausea, Distension of the Stomach
and Bowels, Incipient Diarrhoea,Flalulence.Hahitu
al Costiveness, Loss of Appetite, Blotched or Sallow
Complexion, and in cases of torpor of the bowels,
where a cathartic or aperient is needed They are
exceedingly mild in their operation, producing
neither nausea, griping nor debility.
The following was forwarded to Dr. Peters, by a
highly respectable Planter of Wake County, No
Ca.,March 3d, IS3S:
Dr. Peters —Dear Sir, By requestor your agent,
Mr. Harrison, I send you a few lines respecting the
almost miraculous effects of your pil>s; andl would
add, that you may make use ol them, in connection
with my name, in any manner you deem proper, I
speak of their merits from experience, as I and my
family have taken upwards of thirty boxes in three
years ; and so great are the benefits we have receiv
ed from them in general, that I would rather pur
chase them at ten dollars abox than have my house
without them. I will not enumerate the afflictions
they have relieved us of; but 1 can assure you they
were many, and of very opposite natures, which
has fully proved to me that your medicine is a sim
ple purifier of the system, and therefore equally
the enemy of every disease. I will mention one
case. 1 have a sister who had been for a iong pe
riod severely afflicted with dropsy in the chest and
was brought by it to the very verge of the grave.
She was attended by the most eminent physicians
that money could procure; but all their ellbrts to
restore her to health, or even to mitigate her suffer
ings were fruitless ; and accordingly,we all consid
ered her immediate death as inevitable. By good
fortune, however, as she was in this situation, ex
pecting every day to be her last, your pills were
introduced into my family, and so speedy and pal
pable were their effects that three doses visibly re
lieved her, and in less than three months she was
perfectly restored to health. This case, I and all
who were witness of it, (but more especially the
suffering party,) considered to be the next thing to
miraculous; and yet I could mention many more
of an equally desperate nature, in which your pills
were equally successful in rescuing the patients
from the jaws of death. Need 1 add that the popu
larity of your medicine amounts to enthusiasm in
this section of the country ? But this 1 presume
you know from the immense quantity }'ou dispose
of. I may mention, however, that notwithstanding
its general use, 1 never heard an individual complain
of its effects. My residence is 12 miles from BaJ
eigh, on the road to Fayetteville. 1 am, with sen
timents of regard, your ob’t servant.
A. G. BANKS.
To Dr. Peters, —Sir —For upward* of fifteen
months, 1 have been cruelly afflicted with Fever
and Ague; and during the time could find nothing—
though 1 had applied to every thing that gave me
any thing like permanent relief. At length, how
ever, your pills were recommended to me, by one
of our best physicians, and I am most grateful and
happy in being able to add, that I had scarcely used
two boxes when I found that they had restored me
to perfect health. Since then, various members of
my family have used them with equal success—
and consequently I feel it my duty to apprise you
of the fact, and to request of you to publish this
certificate, as 1 am anxious to add my public testi
mony to the almost miraculous virtues of your un
rivalled medicine. Respectfully yours,
THEODORE JAMES.

Communication received from the eminent Dr. J.
H. Irwin of Florence, Georgia :
Dr. J. P. Peters —My Dear Sir —On the night of
the 11th inst., I was called in great haste to the
house of a fellow ci.izen, (Mr. Lee,) where 1 found
his son laboring under a most alarming attack of
Cynanche Tracnealis (Cronp) and apparently be
yond the aid of remedy. By the greatest good for
tune, however, 1 had in my pocket a broken box of
your pills —four of which 1 administered, with
such immediate happy effect that in a few minutes
my patient was at ease, and out of danger. This
case,in connection with my name is at your ser
vice—and 1 have the pleasure to be able to inform
you that your inestimable medicine is in sucli great
favor with the faculty here, that I believe there is
not one of them who does not use it in his private
practice. Yours most resp’y.

Extract from a letter written by Dr. Francis Bo
gart, of Providence, R. L, Dec. 17, 1838.—Peters’
pills are an excellent aperient and cathartic medi

of the quantity taken, and are decidedly supetior
to Lee’s, Brandi eth’s or Morrison’s Pills.

LE CORDIAL l)E LFCINE.

fINIIE subscriber has the pGasure of announcing
1 to ihe ciiizensof the U. Stales, that he has
purchased, for a very large sura and from ihe in

rec ipe ard riuhi fur making this astonishing rmdi
cine. Until the appearance of ihe “ Lucina Cor

lhe complaints, w hich it speedily overcomes, were
beyond ihe reach of human remedy, as for upwards
of a thousand ytars. they had baffled ihe wisdom
and ingenuity of the most profound physicians in
all parts ot the world. This Cordial, however, to
t lie great advantage of the human race, soon pioved
itself to be the desideratum so long sought for ; anu *
accordingly, notwithstanding tl e brief period of iis
existence, it has required a celebrity so great, t het
it Is eagerly inquired lor throughout the civilized
globe. Dr. Wagnin soon finding that the demand
was so vast as to render a supply impossible, dis
posed of the recipe and right ol sale, under obliga
tions of secrecy, for England, the United Slates,
and olhei countries, only preserving France and
Italy for himself. Thus has Ihe subscriber pos
sessed himself of the invaluable secret; and now
hastens to give the inhabitants of his line of agents,
the Ixmellisof Ids speculation.
“ie Cordial Uc Lucine,” or, in English, “me
Lucica Cordial,” is a general invigorator of the
human frame! In all»he various cases of languor,
lassitude, and debilitation ; it is an unfailing reme
dy ; as il is equally its province to imparl cheerful,
ness and decision to tlie mind, as health and vigor
to the body- But the peculiar virtue on which its
celebrity is based, is the facility and certainly with
which il restores the virile powers when they have
been destroyed by disease.iime, recklessness,orany
of the numerous causes which terminate in the
prostration of those functions.
In common with the generality of really good
medicines, ibis Cordial contains nothing of a mer
curial or deleterious nature, among ihe many ingre
dtents which compose it; but is, at ihe same lime,
so simple, yet so « fficacious, that while it can reno
vate the prostrated energies of a giant, an mfan
may use it,not only with impunity, but with ad
vantage.
The usages of society are unfortunately such,
that, notwithstanding the benefits which would be
sure to result from it, weeannotenler into an analy
sis of thisine limahle Cordial here, or publish many
of the documents which have been received, us
vouchers of the blessings it has conferred on num
bers of despairing individuals. But this we cannot
forbear remarking—that it has been demonstrated
that there is scarcely ever, il any such thing at all,
as natural barrenness, or as natural imbecility of
the procrcant functions, in either sex ; and therefore,
that those evils arc the effects of artificial causes,
ami may be speedily subdued t,nd removed by the
use ol “ Le Cordial de Lucine.”
The Lucina Cordial is also tn indubitable cure
for the Gleet, and the Fluor Albus, obstructed, diffi
cult, or painful Menstruation ; also, fur the incon
tinence ol Urine,or the involuntary discharge there
of. It is likewise an invaluable and unrivalled
medicine incases of Chronic Eruptions of iheskm,
and in the dropsical affections of the aged.

October 3, 1837.
To Dr. Magnin:—My dear friend—l an inns
gratified at the unprecedented popularity > t yout
“Luc na Cordial,” and am able to near testimony to
its surprising virtue. 1 had a patient recently
1 M , a gentleman ol fortune, who had fur
several years abandoned himself in the vortex ol
dissipation ; and was only reclaimed from it at
length by the utter prostration of ah his virile ener
g.es. He was, indeed, reduced to the last extremity
of debility and Usteicssness. for, if an occasional
flash ol excitement warmed his system, the reac
tion was almost immtdiate, and the result perie.-t
prostration. 1 had applied all the usual nostrum
in such cases ; bur, as 1 had anticipated,
success; and when 1 saw the “Lucina Cordial 1
advertised, 1 must confess that even the great weight
of your name did not give me much hoj* i n it, at
least so far as regarded the case in hand. I fell
bound to try it,flowev r,and was soon satisfied of
its efficacy; for lie-lore a buttle was expended, my
patient gave evidence of the returning elasticity of
his system ; and he is now, having used four bottle.-
as w ell&s ever. ’
The number of documents, such as the above
which have been received by Mr. Magnin, since the
