: ' especially a* he was desire jia *>f procuring some ) employment, to assist in y>hiljng away the hours of his captivity. LieuUiiaot Dennis eagerly i I caught at the proposition--;he conceived that his services as an officer woul?{ i>c of great value— % and thought that, of course, no danger would be apprehended from investing I’in with the power lor which he asked; he di|l not even require bis parole. Turner was accordingly forthwith in stalled in the office of secr’ad mate of the schoon er—and pul in charge of i;he starboard watch. Matters passed on smoothly enough for awhile —the men soon got accittlionutl to receive orders from Turner, and obeyed them with alacrity— they found that he was an active officer and a | thorough seaman, and ref lected him accordingly; and under his management J tie schooner went off like a witch on a orooriisrick. In those days, “ Temperance ships” were not so common as at the presa jit lime. There was a good stock of “ old Jamuipa”, and “ London par ticular Madeira” on and Dennis and O'Brien were not, either Uy profession or prac- j tice, friendly to the print; lies ot total abstinence from intoxicating drinks. 1 Several days passed away—when an occur rence took place which p-roduced quite a revolu tion in the feelings of sfjil sn board. It was a pleasant afternoon the schooner had approached 1 nearly to the chops of tt<‘ English Channel—the wind blew a gentle breeif fiom the northwest— and the Purse was si 1 early sliding through the water, at the rate of thru-, or four knots. Lieu tenant Dennis, after having sett ed his dinner with half a bottle of Madeira and a tumbler of atill half and half grog hjtd turned into his berth, and was sleeping away i|t the rate of nine knots and a hall an hour. Mr! O’Brien, who had been rendering some assistance to his superior officer, in diminishing the quiiltity of liquors on board, had thrown himself <km ,i on a soft plank under the quarter rail—and was emulating the example of his commanding officer, in the most praise worthy manner. The £arl oard watch and ihe cook were below in the forecastle—the starboard i watch were on deck, uqd employed about some I triflingjobs. Mr. Turner thought that this was a good lime to carry intf execution a daring de sign which he had mutu;ed,for taking possession of the schooner—and forthwith proceeded to put it into execution. In the fiot place he jlossiessed himself of his pistols, and saw that thv?y were in good order— then he unceremoniously entered the Lieuten ant’s stale room—awaktned him from a sound sleep, and rather uncoujrteously insisted on pin ioning his arms, and Dishing lam to his berth at the same time assuring him. in the most re spectful language, that if he made any noise, or called for assistance, would blow his brains out without scruple, in * Duly scientific manner. The Lieutenant, of caurrie, submitted to these arbitrary exactions, tujbough not with a very good grace, for he considered them unreasonable —and then Turner, in prder to insure his silence, inlruduced, as gently a-' possible, a plump-bolt in to Ills mouth —secured it there by means of a rope yarn, and left hiiri “alone in his glory,” to “chew the cud of swciii: and bitter fancy.” Mr. Turner then wanton deck—and ordered the watch aioft to reeve the gear, rig out the booms, and make the ijiecessary preparations for setting the top-gallant luid royal studding sails— and he soon found arj| excuse for relieving the man at the helm, and lending him up to the fore top mast cross-trees siilso. As soon as all the creyv were off* deck, hi* approached O’Brien, the mate, roused him with; a cturdy kick, judiciously administered—and told him in a quiet and re spective manner, that'ha was under the disagree able necessity of tying him, neck and heels—and ifhe made any resistance, or raised a single note of alarm, he should be compelled, unwillingly, to lodge a bullet in Lis head. His arguments carried conviction to the mind of O’Brien—who saw at once the reasonableness of the request, and submitted to be tied—but bogged Turner to tie him as asy ar possible—to which Turner, with a bland smile, evented. This proceeding wms not witnessed by any of the crew, who were l?usiiy employed aloft. Tur ner then went forward on the forecastle, and part ly lowered down the square-sail, for the purpose of still screening his operations from the sigiit of the crew. He then «jbni over the lid of the fore scutt’c, and placed upon it a kedge anchor, and some other heavy articles—thus effectually pre venting a sortie from any of the inmates of the forecastle. Then stopping out on the main deck, he called upon one cjf the men by name, and or dered him to come doWn from aloft. He obeyed, and as soon as he reached the deck, Turner ap proached him and pitssed a lashing around his arms, almost before the man was aware of what he was about. The sailors aloft saw this move ment on the part of Turner, and one or two of them shrewdly suspected some foul play, commen ced descending ihe rigging—but stopped on be holding the young ejid resolute American stand ing firmly on the maiii deck, with a cocked pistol in his hand, pointing towards them, and three others by his side. He told them in plain terms, that he had bound the officers—that he intended no injury to any man on| board—but that he was re solved to rc-toke the* vessel—and that he would kill the first man who stepped on deck without his orders, or wlio «veu came below the cross trees unlit he was qallcd. A man never argues so forcibly as when Ins points a loaded pistol to your bosom—his logfic fit unanswerable—and in this instance these teamen found it so, and re treated to the cross*-trees, agreeably to his sug gestion, wilhout giving him farther trouble. Turner then eWy went to woik to make pre parations for securing that part of the crew com posing the starboaid watch. He called them down, one by one, jjiwl the men obeyed him with great promptitude, ihough not without grumbling a little, and exprewMng. rather freely, their opin ion of the character of the Yankee trick. He pinioned their arms snugly behind them, and fastened them to r:ngboUaon the deck. Then he went to the fore-scuttle, which, alter consioerahle labor he disencumbered of the kedge anchor, &c. The seven men in the forecastle had been a ware that something stiange was going on above —but their attempt* to get cut were unsuccess ful and they awaited with some degree of anx iety the result of;lh« singular and suspicious movements on der’k. Their suspense was soon at an end—for Tuitier, after be had cleared a way the kedge, liftled the lid. and stood at the scuttle, pistol in r.jnul, and ordered them to come on deck, separately »-nd submit to be securely bound as they patted the scuttle. They had no alternative but to ijcbmit—and in leae than half an hour after he ‘r ;i.l Commenced operations, this voung man. by nri tnirena remarkable for physical power, solely by-.»• jßxercise of energy, courage and resolution. ?<1 bartered the whcle crew— and thev lay before him, one and all, bound, awaiting with no! lit tle anxiety, the next act of “ . I this singular panpmtme: His object watiy.ow to get lid of his prisoners and to procumqasi stance to manage the vessels. Among the crew were three stout Iriah tars, with whom prep rints to the criaia, he had occa sionally converse^ — nnd he had satisfied himself that these men hyltl a most unconquerable antip athy to a British foan of war, and would reedily assist in any fcai>,TU plan to free them from the worse than Eg) juifeu bondage in which thoy were held. He commenced with them on this subject— and they eagerly acceded to bis propo sitions to assist ijiiuv in getting rid of the other prisoners, and in navigating the vessel to a French port. ; He trusted to jthrir honor, and they did not deceive him. He removed the cords which con fined their limb# — and with a good will these four men set thciYsdves at work to hoist out the lonir beat, which, alter a while, by the help of the windlass an j eu-palain, they succeeded in do ing. They put into it a supply of rail and o-re. a quadrant, compass, charts clothing, provisions. 1 and water-and then bundled the Lieutenant mate and men into the boat-cut the bond, of La!nt a er thrCW ,n - and boat’s S them 15* Bam * SboVed ber off ’ w,sh and ? The I urse arrived in safety, and the owners very pro perly gave the command of her to Mr. Turner who performed several voyages successfully to Franee after this occurrence look place. Political Ship News— The following is from the marine report of the New Orleans Bee of the Ist inst. It is worth something for its novelty, as well as for the information which it gives of the progress of the good cause among the hardy boatmen of the west:—“ Steamboat North Star, (from Cincinnati} passed 108 flat boats and 21 rafts with Tippecanoe signals hoist ed, and 2 flats and 1 raft fo;r Kinderhook sour krout.” A boy was lately asked by the catechist of the school, “ who first bit the apple,” to which he replied, don t know—but guess it was our Bets, for she cats green apples hk« the devil.” Addison considered woman as a beautiful ro mantic animal that may be adorned with furs and feathers, pearls and diamonds, ores and silks. A Rumor.— We don't believe it. — lt is ru mored that Amos Kendall is a defaulter to the government to the tune of more than §400,000.
